You're probably right. Still I have to say I find it very pecular that a bible used in courtlike situation would have a cross on it. I would have thought they would have wanted a more generic bible in order to appease more people. That raises an interesting question. Does that mean the cross is a more holy symbol than the bible itself? The Bible is the Bible, whether it has an elaborately decorated cover or a plain one. One thing to note, though, is that a Bible with a cross on it is a Christian Bible---that is, it contains both the Old and the New Testament. I would assume that a Jewish witness would prefer to swear on a Torah, which is the Old Testament, unless he or she affirmed to tell the truth. > That raises an interesting question. Does that mean the cross is a more > holy symbol than the bible itself? In Nick's case that might just be the truth. The cross is the essential Catholic symbol, one that Nick would have revered in life. The Bible, on the other hand, is something that Catholics are not encouraged to read, and in Nick's mortal lifetime, many would not have had the opportunity to do so. The lessons of the Bible are taught to you and interpreted for you by priests. This might be surprising to non-Catholic Christians---I attended Catholic school right through college and it wasn't until I took a theology class as a college sophomore that I had ever read anything of the Old Testament. I know my parents, both very devout Catholics, never read the Bible. I think it could be possible that for Nick, the book itself---the physical manifestation of the Bible---is not revered as much as the symbol of the Cross. It's the words, the concepts, the stories as relayed by the representatives of Christ on earth, the priests, that are sacred. Just because he's Catholic doesn't mean he wouldn't be curious about the debates. And what about the Dying to Know You flashbacks? He was obviously living in some kind of religious community, maybe Protestent or Puritan. I'm SURE he got a good Bible education there. -Megan Naia Zifu <naia_zifu@b.......> wrote: I'm sure he read it (or had it read to him) during his mortal lifetime.
