Subject: My web pages will be down

I just got a notice from the administrator of the server that houses my
main FK page, link page, and fiction page that due to switching to "a new
home," all access will be shut down for anywhere from a few hours to a
couple days. So if you try to get to any of my pages over the weekend and
can't, don't panic. :-)

People got angry soon after you started posting because you went on and on
about vampires in general, instead of FK vampires. Also, you say things that
are generally wrong. And then, there is how when you post you never cut the
quoted part down to 4 lines. And also, there is how you often post comments to
the list that are meant for only one person.

I was watching a silly movie called 'Vampires Anonymous' (in which vampires
join an 'Alcoholics Anonymous' type program to <ahem> 'kick the habit of eating
people'), and in one scene the leader of the discussion group is writing on a
board 'A Bovine A Day Keeps The Shakes Away'... and started laughing
hysterically. I could picture Nat holding a protein shake, while scowling
disapprovingly at Nick as he drank a glass of cow! Okay, I'm going back to

While we're on the topic of War, from what I
understand (which is little, lol) is that to
participate/read war posts you have to be on the FKFIC
list? Is that corrrect? Not to sound totally dumb, but
I just subscribed to the FKFIC-L list and have gotten
no mail at all. (Did get confirmation that I am
subcsribed though)Is something wrong or is this
normal?

I apologize if this is off topic or anthing, just
wanted to know.

I haven't gotten any posts thru fkfic since about noon
today (frequently posts are fewer there on Friday nights
and/or weekends).

Yes, once the war begins you must be subbed to fkfic to
read any of the war posts. Sometime before the war
starts you will also need to check and make sure that
you have also set your options to receive the WAR topic.

To check, send a message with a blank subject line, to
the address LISTSERV@l....... and containing
in the body of the message the command query fkfic-l
(the end command shown below is optional but often
helpful).

TO: <LISTSERV@l.......>
Subject:
query fkfic-l
end

(You still have plenty of time to turn on the WAR option
on fkfic because the war is several WEEKS away.)

Before you can actually participate as a player you must
also "register" to play. Typically you become registered
thru the faction leader(s) of whichever faction you choose
to play along with. THE FACTION LEADERS ARE NOT YET OFFICIALLY
"REGISTERING" players. In order to do that, they must first
have info from the warmistress and THAT individual has
not yet been selected by McLisa and Don.

The factions that will be playing this war will also usually
be actively trying to "recruit" participants thru posts
to forkni (under the WAR topic on forkni). So you should
turn on the forkni war topic as soon as possible and keep
reading the war related posts here. You'll see sigs stating
that someone is a war leader.

It's early enough that I'd imagine that factions are just
now starting to figure out if they're going to be playing
and who the leaders will be.

Thanks for the help. I checked like you suggested, and
it said I'm set to be sent individual postings as they
are received, but I'm not really sure just how to
check on how to receive the WAR topic ones and turn it
on if it's off.

OK, I have sent messages tonight to check on my subs to
both fkfic and forkni. Here is what MINE look like
(note I have some options set that are NOT necessary
just to participate in the war.)

-------------------------- Forkni ----------------------

> query forkni-l
Subscription options for Arletta Asbury <g4akl@c.......>, list FORKNI-L:

MAIL You are sent individual postings as they are received
SUBJECTHDR Full (normal) mail headers with list name in message
               subject
REPRO You receive a copy of your own postings
ACK Short e-mail acknowledgement of successfully processed
               postings
NORENEW You are never required to confirm your subscription to the
               list

The topics you subscribe to are: War, Other

-------------------------------------

See it says I already have the WAR option turned on here on forkni.
(I don't understand what McLisa is going to do on Monday so
afterwards I will recheck and make sure I'm still subbed
the way I want.)

-------------------------- Fkfic ----------------------

> query fkfic-l
Subscription options for Arletta Asbury <g4akl@c.......>, list FKFIC-L:

MAIL You are sent individual postings as they are received
SUBJECTHDR Full (normal) mail headers with list name in message
               subject
REPRO You receive a copy of your own postings
CONCEAL        Your subscription is concealed from non-privileged users;
note that posting to the list will reveal your presence
ACK Short e-mail acknowledgement of successfully processed
               postings
NORENEW You are never required to confirm your subscription to the
               list

The topics you subscribe to are: War, Xover, Adult, V4S, Other

---------------------------------------

See I also have the WAR option turned on on the fkfic list (as well
as a bunch of other stuff -- basically I think I have EVERYTHING
turned on.) <g>

--------------------------------------------
Send another message to the listserver for fkfic to turn on WAR
if it doesn't show up in your previous query fkfic-l command.

TO: <LISTSERV@l.......>
Subject:
set fkfic-l topics: +war
query fkfic-l
end

-------------------------------

Check on forkni (after Monday anyway) with the following
message (note it's just like the one for fkfic except it
says forkni).

TO: <LISTSERV@l.......>
Subject:
query forkni-l
end

-------------------------------------------

If you're not subbed to the WAR topic I think you'd use a message
like the one to set it on fkfic (except you specify forkni) but
I couldn't find an old example of doing it myself -- so maybe
McLisa will supply better info if doing this is incorrect.
But I'd suggest the following to turn it on:

TO: <LISTSERV@l.......>
Subject:
set forkni-l topics: +war
query forkni-l
end

I hope this helps.

I'm answering on list because I think there may be others with the same query.

First of all, Megan, there's no need to feel dumb. It's a perfectly good
question and it's not off-topic because it concerns the lists. Fkfic-l is up and
running and there were some posts. I notice your address is at Yahoo, so maybe
you'd better check and see if their spamblocker has mistaken the Fkfic-l mail for
spam and delivered it to the trash folder. This has happened before with both
lists on more than one isp.

Since you got the confirmation notice, you are definitely subbed.

Subject: Admin: How to subscribe and other options

I've been asked, so here's how to subscribe if you aren't currently on Forkni-l
and want to be, or Fkfic-l and want to be. You will see several places where I
have quotation marks around something, and then say not to use the quotation
marks. This is because _I_ have to put them in. Otherwise, the listserv software
will think I'm trying to send a command to the listserv and sending it to the
list by mistake. It will then reject my post. You shouldn't have the quotation
marks there. They will keep the listserv from understanding your command.

Send a message to "listserv@l......." Don't use the quotes.

The command is "subscribe forkni-l firstname lastname" Don't use the quotes.
Replace firstname lastname with your first and last names. You may use an alias,
but the software requires two words.

For Fkfic-l, simply put that list in place of Forkni-l

The command can be either upper or lower case, but it must be exactly as
shown. I recommend cut and paste.

If you have trouble getting this to work, please let me know and I can
subscribe you.

Nowar (-war in the options) is the default for both lists. If you want war
posts, you need to send a post to the same address with the command "set forkni-l
topics:+war" Don't use the quotes here, either. For Fkfic-l, put Fkfic-l
instead of Forkni-l.

If you don't want war posts, the command is "set forkni-l topics:-war" and of
course, don't use the quotes. For Fkfic-l, put Fkfic-l in the command instead
of Forkni-l.

The command can be either upper or lower case, but it must be exactly as I've
written. I recommend cut and paste.

If you have trouble getting this to work, please let me know and I can set
options for you.

Information on how to make your posts "war:" on both lists will follow shortly.

That would be the game software, sticking with the legend. (Even if the
program's developers (murder victim and murderer) had wanted to give their
players reflections, they would have to make arrangements to scan the
users' images into the program first.)

Nat's comment to Nick and his reply when she's taking out the bullet is the
only mention of vamps not showing up in mirrors in FK. It's easy to see why
they dropped the concept. Aside from the additional cost in special effects
(it would be easier now), it's completely bogus when you have a vampire
living and working with humans undetected in a modern setting, which is
full of reflective surfaces. Schanke would have noticed if his partner
couldn't be seen in the rear or side-view mirrors of the car, a dark
window, or a computer monitor, much less the mirrors in a room under
investigation - or the stainless steel surfaces in the morgue ! <gr>

Because FKFIC is only for posting fiction, it isn't very busy (except when
