Oh, that sounds fun! I just wish I had enough vacation time to go.
Any chance of one happening in Minnesota anytime soon? :)

Subject: Citizen Kane and Lacroix

Last night we watched _Citizen Kane_ for the first time on DVD. In the "extras"
it was explained that the newsroom scene where chorus girls dance to a
laudatory song that Kane has had someone write about himself was originally
supposed to take place in a brothel. The censors insisted that the location
be changed. Does this remind anyone of the brothel scene in "A More Permanent
Hell" where we learn that Lacroix hired an artist to make a bust of himself?
In "Jane Doe", Lacroix turns out to be the one with the username "rosebud" and
the actor who plays the serial killer to whom Nick turns for help does an amazing
impersonation of Orson Welles. I think someone is trying to point out to us how
much Citizen Kane and Lacroix are alike, how much the two feel deprived of love,
and how controlling they can both be.

I always thought that "rosebud" was a reference to Fleur, Nick's sister. (Or is
it "Fluer?") In any case, in my mind, LaCroix chose the name in her memory.

I always assumed it was because the name was so innocuous.
A master vampire conversing with serial killers who calls himself
"rosebud".
If you read the MindHunter books and some of the other books
available on serial killers, you will see that a lot of them "look
like the guy next door". True serial killers are very good at not
looking like anything dangerous. It lulls the victim into not being
afraid and defensive until it is too late.
        LaCroix is a predator himself.
I'm sure he has a fine appreciation of the art of concealment.
To say nothing of a taste for irony.

Actually 1228 is too early for a fixed surname when the surname only means "of
Brabant." Brabant was a sovereign duchy in the 13th century, so "de Brabant"
is a description rather than a surname in the modern sense.

I have always wondered, given the oppulence in which Nick's family lived and
the high-level diplomatic mission on which he served in Queen of Harps, if he
was from a cadet branch of the ducal family. This would explain why he appears
to use "de Brabant" as a surname for things like the foundation. It would also
explain why a knight from such a family was not "de (name of family esate)" or
"son of whoever."

About Lucius and the sculptor. The only way he could have put the sculptor's
eyes out (assuming he was not joking; I've always thought Nigel's delivery can
be read that way) would be if the man was his slave. 79 A.D. is in the reign
of Titus, who was the son of Vespasian, who had restored the rule of law and
order to Rome.

Well it could be an in house in joke, although I thought Springfield's Nick
was only 200 or so, but wasn't one of Anne Rice's vampires a rock star for
a while? That might have been a reference the audience would have been
more likely to get, and heaven knows there were plenty of other A. R.
"homages" in other eps.

Actually, I think he was doing an impression of Anthony Hopkins from Silence
of the Lambs.

Btw, Lacroix is more Harry Lime than Charles Kane.

I was just thinking how good Nigel would be as the
Duke of...Milan, is it?...in 'Measure for Measure'. Ger
would make a great Prince Angelo, and I can definitely
see Catherine Disher as Isabella. Ben Bass would be
a fun Lucio. Who for Isabella's brother (Claudio?)?
