I received this in my email today, and thought that I'd share it all with
you!  Since we have 'factions' here in the FKverse, I thought some of you
might like to know where the word originated.


Q: Why do we call a group within a group a faction?
 A: This word has a contentious connotation and organizations often find
it threatening. Political groups, for example, wishing to give the
impression of unity, may deny it exists and call it a fiction. Or they
might acknowledge some division, but minimize it as a fraction.
The word faction comes from the circus. No, not the kind where they have
clowns, although my example about politicians might have lead you to
guess that. This is the Roman Circus Maximus, and the performers we're
interested in were the charioteers. They were grouped by "parties," the
Latin word for which was factio. Each wore a different color. In the
waning days of the Empire, two of the factios were also organized along
political lines. They clashed over their politics, giving rise to the
modern word faction and its disputatious sense.

Do vampires count their mortal ages when calculating their age?  Anyway, if
Vachonetti was brought across in 1531, and I guesstimate that Screed was brought
across sometime around the 1540s, V-man could have been Screed's master.  As for
the status between them, considering that they possibly were hanging together
from almost their beginnings as vampires (both brought across fairly close in
time), I think there would be a tendency for them to have more of a comaraderie
than a master/child status.  Two little vampies alone in the world learning
about their vampire powers together.... "g"

Of course, this then would ignore what libs told us about the actual time of the
conquistador period and what "Screed" himself claimed.  I guess the question is
unresolvable....I like the idea that Vachon brought Screed across, because then
the pathos of the scenes of Vachon tending his childe and Screed's death become
only more moving -- or so think I.

I tend to go with Greg's time period for the conquistadors as I've never had
time to research it and don't know much about that particular point in history.
(I've had other fans use the same time frame as Greg, too)

That's part of what Greg was saying - since some of his dialogue did not make it
to the final version of the episode, it is still up in the air and up to our own
imaginations. This is just how *he* (as Greg) invisions it, and I agree with
him. At first, I was more of the Vachon as Screed's sire camp, but having
hashing it out with Greg, I changed my mind.

(By the way, I don't always agree with him - myself and another fan actually did
argue with him over whether or not a certain Toronto location was an actual
filming location.<g> Anyone passing by on the sidewalk probably wondered what
was going on....hahahah. It was a first season location, so he didn't film
there, in any case.)

I prefer the idea that they are very close friends, so close they are like
brothers without actually being related. Most of the vampire relationships we've
seen in FK that are close are those of relatives (Nick/Janette/LaCroix). So, to
*me*, the fact Vachon and Screed were that close without being blood kin makes
it very special to me. Especially considering Screed is carouche, a lower form
of vampire, so most of the "high muckity-mucks vamp type" wouldn't let him play
in their vampire games. Even Nick bullied Screed.

Vachon didn't care, though. He loved Screed however Screed was.

My best friend nagged me, back when FK was in the first season on CBS Crimetime
after Primetime, until I set my vcr and caught Only the Lonely. I was
immediately hooked. The next week, I went looking on the internet for the old
Vampyres@g....... because I had heard of that list and figured that if anyone knew
anything about FK, a list for vampire fans would. Then one day the formation of
Forkni-l was announced on Vampyres. I signed on, and I've been into FK its
fandom ever since.

In my college days, I had been a great fan of Dark Shadows, which was in its
original run on ABC daytime. A new series about a reluctant vampire was
guaranteed to addict me.

I must admit that my first reaction to my friend's description was, "a homicide
detective who's a what?!!" followed by laughter. However, we've been best
friends since the 7th grade and have similar tastes, so I took her advice. I've
always been glad I did.

I'd known about the show since its CBS days as some friends in the local science
fiction club watched it. I even knew there were some changes coming around in
the third season, though not much more than that.

Right before the third season started - maybe a week or so before - I was in my
second serious car wreck in 18 months. It not only re-injured my upper back, but
created a new injury in the area not far from the original one. So I was
prescribe Valium to keep me comfortable.

The science fiction club meeting was at my house the night the third season
premiered locally. Only a few people were there, and one asked if we could watch
FK - he couldn't wait to get home to see his tape.

I tend to like non-extremely violent vampire tales, so wasn't surprised that I
liked it. The next week, I watched BBII and discovered... SCREED! I just thought
he was totally cool! He ate RATSIES! He was COCKNEY! He was COLORFUL!

I called the friend who'd been at my house the week before and asked if he had
any other episodes with Screed.

Imagine my disappointment to discover Screed was a new character.

Imagine my amusement a few days later when it was discovered I was basically
overdosing on Valium as it was building up in my system.

So, I've always blamed my Ratpackerdom on Valium.

I knew there was a big on-line fandom for the show, but didn't really join-in
until the V4S was announced. I had to be a part of that, I decided.

FK fandom has been VERY good to me. I've met so many wonderful friends on-line,
and then in person - and that includes some of the actors.

One of the first people I met was McLisa. She has since denied having said this
(or at least doesn't remember saying it), but she took one look at me and said,
"You're Libby? You are so ... CUTE!" ROTFL! <wRPg> We were at Bridging the
Knight, the big auction held after the show was cancelled, and ended up sitting
next to each other at one point.

I've been on the Net a very long time, but never have I encountered a more
loving group than FK fans. When my ex left me, and then when I came out, I was
surrounded with such love and acceptance it moved me to tears at time. When he
left, someone even told me to get off-line, then she called me and stayed on the
phone with me until a local friend got to my house.

Okay, I'm getting sappy, but I'm just statin' the truth o' the matter, eh?

Lucien LaCroix. I immedatly likedt he character and an ex friend of mine sent
me soe of her tapes that she had made. I believe this is my first time

I have to say I really wondered how it was the advertiser
and Sci-Fi figured that Forever Knight audience was a
good target for Def Comedy Jam video ads.  I can't
decide whether or not it's an improvement over all the
psychic ads they used to run during FK the last time
it aired.

Most cable channels seem to have slots for national advertising and slots for
local advertising.  In what I *thought* were national slots, I got a lot of
ads for Pillsbury products (Toaster Strudel, biscuits, etc.) and a lot of ads
for Johnson Wax products (Pledge Orange, Fantastik Orange, Draino, Pledge
Grabit cloths, Glade Plug Ins, etc.).  I say I *thought* they were national
slots because I asked people (online) in other parts of the country if they
got JWax ads and they said they didn't.  JWax is local here (I live in
Racine, Wisconsin, where JWax world headquarters pollutes the earth...Sam
Johnson still lives here), so now I'm wondering if they were a national
sponsor or just local.  I'd rather not thank the evil JWax empire, but will
bite my tongue and do so if they were a national sponsor.  Did anyone else
get ads for Johnson Wax products?  If you did and want to thank them, I know
their address. :-)

In honor of the Return:

LaCroix is on the pull in Glasgow. He spends the night drinking
Bloody Marys in various vampire clubs and biting on unsuspecting women's
necks. He is heading for home, wandering along Argyle street sometime
before sunrise.

Suddenly... WHACK! Something hits him on the back of the head.
He looks round and, expecting to be confronted by the usual edible
mugger, is surprised to see nothing. He looks down and finds a small
sausage roll. "Hmmm," thinks he, "what's going on here?"

A few yards further on and ... BANG! Smacked on the back of the head
again!

He whirls round as quick as he can but sees nothing.

Then he looks down again and there is a small triangular sandwich
lying on the ground. "How odd!" he exclaims to himself.

A few yards further along the street and .... CRASH. Right on the back of
his head again! He spins round, snarling at the empty air. He's getting
really quite angry now.

Seeing the little cocktail sausage lying on the ground, he pauses and
peers into the darkness of the night.

Nothing.

Only a few yards further on, he gets a sudden tap on the shoulder.
With a swirl of his cape, accompanied by the obligatory chord of
orchestral music, he pivots on the spot and lunges but... too late!
He feels a sudden, sharp pain in his chest, which has been punctured
by a small cocktail stick laden with a chunk of cheese and a square
of pineapple.

He falls to the ground and sees a young female standing over him.
With his dying breath, he gasps, "Who are you?"

She replies, "My name is ...........

Ben will be in two plays this summer at the Atlantic Theatre Festival in
Wolfville, Novia Scotia.

He will play Petruchio in Taming of the Shrew (running from early July to early
August of 2002) and James Keller in The Miracle Worker (running from early
August to early September).

Subject: Long Ago Visions (CHICAGO)

Curious thought.

I had the fortunate experience to enjoy Forever Knight with a bunch of
fans at a Visions (forgot the year) a long time ago.  And I am curious
how the folks I met that evening are doing.

Here is what I remember:

1) Nigel Bennet was at the Con
2) Sons of Belial aired that evening
3) One woman played an acoustic guitar
4) Another woman did some fantastic video editing
5) I wore a FK shirt
6) The hotel room had double beds.

Jeez, that is all I can remember.  I saw Sons of Belial today
on SCI-FI (glad it's back) and all these memories from that
Con started flooding in.

If you remember any of this, please contact me.  I'd like to
see how you're all doing.

Here goes mine:

The very first time I watched Forever Knight was not memorable, by which I
mean that I don't remember it very well. ;) I was in high school, and a
bunch of us were staying over at a friend's for the weekend. At about four
in the morning, one of my friends popped in one of her FK tapes. The show
was in its third season, and she and another friend were hooked in a major
way. I'd never seen it, and was mildly interested, but it was four a.m. and
I was coming down off a major sugar high, so I was burrowed into the couch,
three-quarters of the way asleep. At one point I actually asked "Which one
is Tracy and which one is Natalie again?"

Then, all of a sudden, I felt something bite my ankle. (This was right at
the point that Nick was sinking his fangs into some tasty blonde or other.)
I screamed, and my friends screamed, and when I stuck my foot out, there
were two barely discernible puncture marks, welling blood. Everyone was a
bit rattled, until our hostess explained that the couch was old, had some
springs poking through, and was inclined to bite every now and again. (Since
then the couch has had an appropriate 'Nick'-name.) Well, I couldn't
possibly sleep after that, so I stayed up to watch several more episodes,
all third season.

The show ended not long after that, and my two girlfriends who had been fans
lost interest. (They also refused to tell me how it ended, which meant I got
quite a surprise later on.) Then, one week while I was off school sick, I
discovered that Showcase was replaying the series. Once I saw the early
episodes, I was hooked. (The really funny thing was, when my mother came
downstairs one day and saw what I was watching, she told me she used to
watch the show during its CBS days and had even mentioned it to me, thinking
it was something I'd like!) By this time I had internet access and was able
to find and read fanfic, and eventually sneak onto this list. :) The FK fans
I've met through here have all been wonderful so far, and I look forward to
meeting more of you someday.

Those must have been national slots, as we were
getting them here in DC/NOVA.  In fact I think I have
some of them MEMORIZED by now.  (Geez, kid, if you
want toaster strudel instead of Pop-Tarts, tell you
mother so she'll stop buying you the frelling
Pop-Tarts!  And anyone else think those Glade plugin
air freshner/outlet/night lights are getting to be
overacheivers?  What next, one that does your taxes?)


Please, please, please, though, tell me those stupid
fitness ads with John Basedow were local.  If I never
see any of them again it'll be too soon and the last
thing I'd ever want to do is encourage them no matter
what show they're buying time during.

And this, btw, was the first time I've ever seen an FK
ep all the way through that wasn't on a grainy
sixth-generation video with bad sound.  And I finally
got to see some of the eps I've wanted to!  (Night in
Question, Curioser and Curioser, A More Permanent
Hell, to name a few.)  I have reaffirmed my devotion
as a N&NPacker--they belong together. (Interperet that
as you will.)  And yet, having seen more and better
episodes than on the tape I got, I like Janette, too.
I also found myself torn about the Captains--I really
don't know if I like Cohen or Reese better!  I feel as
if I should chose, but I can't.  I like them both.
(Stonetree, no offense to any fans, didn't really do
anything for me.)

And whoa...we should all be glad that Divia lived in
Pompeii and not Rome proper (image the havoc she could
wreak there!) and that she was born too late to have
ever met Caligula.  What a pair they'd have
made....I've never seen eps with her before, but eep,
did she just radiate evil.

My only problem--I managed to somehow not rewind the
tape all the way, and when I had to go to class I was
able to tape "Night in Question" and whatever followed
it immediately ("A More Permanent...?") but I missed
the beginning of the episode about Anne Rice--er,
about  Emily Weiss or whatever they called the vampire
writer.  I caught the lead-in on the tape and the last
ten minutes when I got home.  Oh, well, I'll just have
to start watching from the beginning.  What a
sacrifice... ;)

While trying to hook my mother on the show and
watching Dark Knight part 2, I was paying close
attention to Alyce, to see if I could spot when the
blood shows up on her neck.  When Nick goes to rescue
her behind the wall of fire and picks her up, you can
see some coming from behind her head and down her
neck.  I had always wondered about that part and now I
have my answer.  I believe when Fenner threw her
across the painting tables, she hit her head and
caused the first blood.  She was unconsious for a bit
also, so must have hit pretty hard.

I also noticed in Night in Question that Natalie tells
Nick he is 767 years old, if I remember that
correctly.  If he adds his human years (33), that
would round him up to 800.  Maybe all vampires do
that.  So nice to have them back.  Phylis

Guess who's satellite feed was out yesterday?  I got
home, dealt w/ kids & dinner, and then remember that
the marathon was on.

Go out to LR to turn on TV, and no satellite feed.
AARRGGHH!!!!

I'm in Chicago, and we got about 1.5inches of wet
heavy snow, so I attributed it to that.  It rarely
goes out - usually only in heavy storms, and I figured
that the dish was filled w/snow.

THEN I find out after it's all over that it was only
the local channels that were out... if I had punched
in the code for SCIFI, I probably would have gotten
it.  (2 separate satellite feeds - one for local
channels, one for everything else).

sigh... it figures.

I sent Sci-Fi a nice note yesterday thanking them for returning FK to the
weekday schedule, as well as for the FK Chain Reaction.  I got back a reply
from them letting me know that they'd recieved it, which was a pleasant
surprise.

When Sci-Fi gets feedback from us, it's a good barometer that they're doing
something right, so let 'em know that they're doing good!  :)

Which makes me wonder....  think our next project should be asking them about
airing the Nick Knight tv movie?

Now that Forever Knight is back on in the United States, the Greg Kramer Fan
Klub would like to toot its own horn.

Unfortunately, we had to pawn it a while back.

Oh, well, you can still join! It is a free, on-line based fan klub and
usually gets the latest Greg Kramer newz and iffy-mation FIRST! The
yahoogroups list is usually fairly quiet, and you can always sign up to read
the messages on-line or get the digest version (that has been known to cause
indigestion in delicate tummies).

For those of you new to Forever Knight, Greg is not only the rat-eating
vampire of questionable social habits, but has also had recurring roles in
Canada's television series John Woo's Once A Thief and The Neverending
Story. He's a noted stage actor *and* director, as well as a fantastic,
celebrated Canadian author. (Well, the gkfk celebrates his books anyway -
beats lining the cat box with them)

His books include the wonderfully wacky mystery "Pursemonger of Fugu: A
Bathroom Mystery" and "Couchwarmer" (featuring an innersexual anti-hero).
His collection of short stories, Hogtown Bon Bons, feature stories which
were originally serialized in Toronto's edition of Xtra!

During the time I watched the FK marathon, I saw quite a few ads for SC
Johnson products, so Becky wasn't the only one who saw them. SC Johnson is a
major national advertiser, so thanking them for advertising during the FK
marathon is a good way to let them know that their message is getting through.

I think you might be able to give them feedback at www.scjohnson.com, but I'd
have to double check on it.

OK, I feel like an idiot, and this is is a shot into
the Abyss, but here goes..

A few days ago I saw a promo on TV for *some* upcoming
theatrical release.  I missed the name as I fixated on
a very quick flash of a person in the promo, and I
really thought it was John Kapelos.

I don't even remember what the movie was about, just
that it was upcoming.  (Real helpful, eh?)

Anybody else have the same impression?  Or am I just
seeing things?  (which is very likely)

Their are two roleplays on line that I know of,that have Fk vamps. One is one
that my best friend ones, and that is called Blackrose,and occassionaly my
friend will play Jeanette but usually LaCroix is part of the main characters
as well. Another one is a continuation of the movie Labyrinth and it did have
someone who played Nicholas and at one time,a LaCroix was there as well. That
game is run by a girl named raven at JTheGoblinKing@a........ I am not sure if
that game is still being played or if the FK characters there are still
around.Good luck though!
