When you're listening to an 80's compilation CD and you start postulating
a story in which one of Natalie's cures goes terribly wrong (*again*<g>)
and Nick has to tell a smug LaCroix "She blinded me with science!" And
later a peeved Vachon complains of a (to him) overzealously neat Urs:
"There she goes again, she's tidied up, and I can't find anything!"

A bit later later you imagine a slash fic in with Nick and LaCroix are
reconciled and Nick resumes his former place in LaCroix' dungeon,
titled...wait for it..."Back in the chain gang." <g>

Subject: Backing Up Your Fav FK Sites

Hi everyone,

Teresita here. I tried to go back to lurkdom after I posted yesterday... I
was feeling rather like Mary's lost lamb after posting what erroneously
about the fic site. Then later I realized everyone was having the same
problem so I didn't feel quite so baaaa'd anymore. (Go ahead and groan.
:-) That joke *was* pretty lame.)

So what brings me out of lurkdom you ask? Here it is:
(Posted with Listmommy McLisa's permission)

This is about the latest problem to concern the list... The
apparent/possible loss of Mel's FK fanfic site. This problem really shows
us all that we *do* need to back up what is precious to us. In fact, I wish
someone had done for the Church site what Steph did for Mel's. But I
digress...

Anyway to continue, I have discovered what promises to be an easy way to
download those favorite Forever Knight sites that you want to preserve. You
see, I subscribe to a daily posting called TipWorld, and I have found some
excellent websites this way. I received the post below just this morning
from TipWorld. It's a URL for free a software program, (although you get
additional features if you pay to register it). It's called Web Copier.

The website claims that Web Copier is able to download to your hard drive an
entire site for you. This would make it very easy and convenient to prevent
what could be a catastrophe if your favorite Fk site ever goes down. I did
go to the URL listed, and visited the site to learn more about the software.
The download for the program is there, and I intend to install it this
weekend on my own PC. (I'm installing to my second hard drive to insure I
have plenty of free space. See cautions below.) As I visited, I learned
about the program itself. Web Copier looks great, and it could be *very*
applicable to preventing another situation like the current problem that has
surrounded the FK FanFic site.

Now for a few words of caution and common sense, or in other words... This
is my CYA (PG translation... cover your behind) speech;
I would recommend it as an option for people to try *at their own risk*. I
can only pass on the information I've received. It is up to you, as an
individual, to decide to whether or not you want to use this program.

I did notice a couple of things at the site that could be crucial to getting
the most out of Web Copier. One of the most important things is to be sure
that you have enough hard drive space, (For instance, the program only
recommends you have *at least* 25 MB of free hard drive space for the files
you plan to download, and this is *after* downloading the program itself.
I'm sure Mel's site, in its entirety, was much, much larger.) Also, it
would probably be helpful if you are somewhat fairly computer savvy. Or, at
least, have your favorite computer guru standing next to you! (I sure
don't want anyone screwing up their PC -no Mac version available- and then
blaming me!)

Now to keep myself clean with all you website owners out there... Please
folks, if you decide to try this program, I think it would be courteous to
*first* email the webmistress/master of the site you would like to download.
You might let her/him know of your intentions to download their site *for
your personal use* and perhaps to obtain their permission. Let her/him know
that you are in no way trying to pirate their site, but you want to do this
so that you will have the information they have provided on the net at your
fingertips when you need it. <End CYA message. ;-) >

The message I received from TipWorld with the URL follows my sig. line.

Hugs,

Ter teresitatazon@n.......

TODAY'S TIP: WEB COPIER

http://www.maximumsoft.com/

You've found a site that contains information you need, but you'd
prefer to search through it offline. Web Copier could be the tool
you've been looking for. Simply download the free software, type in a
Web address you'd like to explore and watch it go to work. The
software will download the entire site you indicated. You now have the
whole shebang on your hard drive to peruse at your leisure. Ideal for
people who need to do a lot of research, Web developers who like to
dissect a site, or just regular folks who don't want to tie up the
phone line.

Hoo-boy.

First, I'm *still* not having any problem getting into www.fkfanfic.com or
navigating around it--in fact, I read several stories on there just this
afternoon, and to make sure it wasn't a cached copy, I emptied my cache
beforehand. Am I the only one able to get in?

Second, PLEASE do not back up any part of my site to your hard drive(s) *at
all*. I just don't feel right about it.

Subject: Vortex Fic Archive Update

Lots of news about the archive.

First, we have a domain now, and the archive has moved to:
http://www.ondragonswing.com/vortex/, So please, update your bookmarks!

Secondly, with the move, the site as been updated, along with new stories
in our Forever Knight section, amongst others. (But we'd love to be able to
add even more FK fic)

We also have a new name, "The Dragon's Hoard Fiction Archive". While we're
still an archive for the "Vortex" fiction list, we've become more of a
general fanfic archive, so we changed the name to go along with the dragon
theme of the new domain.

Last, but most importantly, we're always looking for new submissions. Any
fandom, and rating, we'd love to add your story to the archive.

If you'd like to submit a story, here are the submission guidelines:

Please send the story as text only, or as an txt attachment to:
archivist@o......., and please include the following:

*The fandom(s) contained in the story
*A disclaimer
*The rating of the story (G, PG, R, NC-17)
*The e-mail address you want comments for the story to go to. (Or no
address if you prefer)
*The author name you wish to use
*A short (one to two line) summary of your story.
*Any modifiers for the story. (Ex: Graphic violence, death, graphic sex,
same sex situations, etc)
*Our two no-nos: No real persons may be mentioned in the stories archived
unless you have written permission from them, and no stories will be
archived unless submitted by the author.

Please note that what you send will be exactly the way the story is
archived. We will not beta read for you. The only editing we will do is to
make the story fit the format of the archive.

Please feel free to forward this to anyone you think might be interested.

With the domain, we got oodles of webspace, so the more stories the merrier <g>

Which role did he play?

This is indeed a very good movie and, for those who
haven't seen it, Colm Feore has quite a central role
as the auctioneer.

Subject: OFF-Topic : How to send Text-only messages from AOL 6.0

I hope the list-mommy won't be mad at me for de-lurking long enough to pass
this on. I got it from another list I'm on and several people have said that
it does work. (I still haven't upgraded from AOL 4.0 so I can't try it
myself and see how it reacts.)

How to send plain text from AOL V6.0:
=====================================

1. Make sure your font is set to Arial 10, the AOL default.

2. Create a message using only default Arial 10 type. Any
quoted text pasted in from another message must also be
in Arial 10 type (no bold, other sizes or colors). Note:
if you paste a message that was received in HTML format,
it will probably cause you to send in HTML.

3. Hit Control-A to highlight the entire message.

4. Right click anywhere in the message itself: A 'popup menu'
will appear. Move the cursor to "text" and another menu
will appear. Move the cursor to "normal" and click on it.

5. Send the message.

IN Red Violin, Julian Richings played one of the bidders - he's the one who
nervously comes in at the last moment. He's a tall, very skinny guy will
longish brown hair.

Mel is aware that there is a problem with the fkfanfic site, and she's
looking into it. Don't panic--word is it may be 24-48 hours before it gets
completely straightened out. The site hasn't gone away permanently, and
there's very little chance of that happening in the foreseeable future.

This message brought to you by Mel's corresponding secretary. ;-)
