This is definitely a kid by kid and even episode by episode decision. My
seven year old is easily frightened and there are scenes in, for instance,
"Trophy Girl" that would be very traumatic for her. She, by the way, likes
Nick a lot "because he helps people", so I guess she would be a Knightie.
(One of her favorite scenes, though, is when Nick makes that smoking dash in
"Games Vampires Play". Really gives her the giggles. Maybe she'll grow up
to be a Dark Knightie.)
My four year old is a born Cousin. She has this *stare*. <shudder> I don't
let her watch, because she doesn't need that kind of...positive
reinforcement.

Someone wrote in asking for comparisons between Nick/Barnabas and
Natalie/Julia Hoffman.
The first thing that comes to mind is that Barnabas was purely a victim.
I've never seen the first season of Forever Knight, but I've always had
the feeling that to some extent at least, Nick chose what happened to him.
Is that true?

The problem with any drug is that if not used carefully, there can be
unintended effects. (As Nick and Nat well know.)
If a person is taking other drugs and hasn't let the doc know there can be
drug interactions. If a person is allergic, there can be all sorts of "fun".
If a person has Manic-Depression instead of monopolar depression, they can
go manic. If they start to recover from their depression they can suddenly
have the energy to kill themself or someone else (which they had planned to
do in the first place). They can have idiosyncratic reactions.
In terms of overprescribing, we are a quick fix society. People want instant
results (just like Nick who complains about "4 years" and has no patience
for it to take longer). They don't like the idea of talking to a therapist,
especially not when a pill can make them feel better without the work.
Some people legitimately need meds of this sort. It helps them face
themself. Others need to learn to cope. Others need a major lifestyle change.
There is no one answer.
I personally don't think that Nick needs Prozac so much as he needs to
learn to face/forgive himself and accept himself. He also needs to either
learn patience with the therapies Nat is trying, or he needs to learn to
cope with the idea of remaining a vampire.

I can't remember the episode title, but I think it was in the third
series. That episode where Nat was supposed to be having knee surgery,
and the doctor was going to preform an illegal heart transplant.

I disagree that Nick was a murderer before being brought over. In
"Last Act", the conversation with Erica is about a *battle* where Nick
was wounded (nearly mortally). Nick was a soldier in the Crusades,
remember. The demon could also have used "de Brabant" merely because
it is Nick's original *name*. Even though Nick has had many aliases
since coming across, Nick probably still thinks of himself as a
de Brabant.
Besides, if he was such a murderer as a mortal, how do you explain his
mortal actions in Queen of Harps? There he is presented as a mortal
who questions the rightness of supressing the rights of what his
"lord" considers heretics. When his Druid lover is murdered, Nick
is then "railroaded" into serving in the Crusades. But I get the
impression from Queen of Harps that Nick was honorable, if a bit on
the naieve side. I think any killing he did was in the line of duty.
Perhaps he came to consider it "murder" in his own mind, but his
actions in the Crusades would not be considered "murder" by those
who authorized such activity. He may have gotten bitter by what
happened to him in the Crusades too, but none of that indicates to me
that he was a murderer as a mortal.

I do not know what '60s thatother guy was living--does not sound like the
'60s in which I grew up. As some unknown general said during a
congressional hearing, " we have to make pot illegal--you can't get those
pot smokers to kill anyone." Think about it, a vampire with the
munchies. Not thatI have ever known anything about that activity.

Human strength can kill a person. That's why they tell you to only compress
a certain amount, not "with all your strength". So if humans have to be
careful, the vampires would too. And, except when engaged in certain
activities, they can probably control themselves or they wouldn't be able to
shake hands, pick up a crystal goblet or any of a number of things which
require control.
It's my understanding that vampires breathe when they want to. (Although
that doesn't explain why *Nick* took a couple of deep breaths in NIQ, nearly
scaring the poor nurse to death.)

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, and since I haven't been on the
list long enough to know if this has been discussed before....
Why wouldn't vampires breathe? Why wouldn't their hearts beat?
Afterall, they do have to eat. But if nothing else works besides the
need for eating, does that also mean their degestive tracks don't work,
meaning even further, they never have to take a crap........
What a wonderful thing that would be....never having to go to the lui.
This would also mean that reproductive organs would not work, meaning
Nick, or any other vampire could not have kids..... (more on that
tomorrow. I have a history of vampires note to post tomorrow that
explains how some the superstitions around vampires began. Very
interesting research!)
