I still take issue with the concept that because Nick killed in battle, that he is necessarily a murderer. I'm not disputing the brutality of the crusaders, I'm familiar with it and am not burdened by myths of the knight in shining armour. The middle ages (not just the crusades) were a brutal time, and a man might have killed for any number of reasons (including that someone was about to kill him) without having been considered a murderer. There has always been a distinction made in both law and custom between killing and murder. > I do believe that Nick did kill as a mortal, but in any > case, and as Katja implied, he was not exactly morally pristine. Funny, but not one of the kids has ever asked me about the vampire premise. The most anyone asked (my 12 year old) was why he was drinking blood out of the fridge. Either they picked up on everything else themselves, or because between "Goosebumps" , "Interview withthe Vampire" and even some cartoons (Animaniacs comes to mind which had a particularly hilarious vampire episode) the kids already know what they are and what they do. Oh, and yea, I watched Dark Shadows when I was about 12 too. As a matter of fact, I've been buying the tapes and we get a real good giggle out of them. And when I asked them to write a story about Nick (I gave last year's class this same exercise, you might recall), the kids had Nick: - marrying Cohen - turning into a bat - biting the crooks - marrying Natalie, moving to Namibia (I have no idea why) and having "two vampire babies". I disagree. Maybe all male children are Cousins, but my 7-year old daughter is most definately a Ravenette. She has wonderful fashion sense. She does not watch FK however. It's too intense for her. Certainly many cartoons are more violent. And sexual content is less than the evening news. But the cartoons and other shows are filmed in bright, light colors. FK's overall mood and lighting is dark. This makes it more frightening to children. Also, it's *my* time for the TV and to relax. LC is almost like an "anti-Darius." Consider: 1) They were both successful generals in their mortal lives. 2) They both transformed the lives of their "sons." 3) They both live by a moral code their "sons" can't quite accept. 4) They are both, in their relative contexts, extremely ancient immortals (pre-Methos canon; bear with me). 5) In the last episode of their first seasons, Darius died and LaCroix was resurrected. 6) LC is "Uncle" and Darius is Father. 7) France (and probably Rome). In this "never-could-be ep," we would get to see a meeting between Darius and LC... maybe even in a *flashback*... and, best of all, Nick would get to pour his heart out to Darius... :) I really think Confession would do Nick a lot of good, and where else are we going to get a priest who can truly believe -- much less understand -- him? :) ***Amy(Amy R.)r......@w....... Oh, this is an excellent point. I wasn't making a distinction between being a murderer and a killer and there is a distinction there. However, by the same argument, it is my opinion that killing as a Vampire for pure survival is more justified than killing for survival in a religious war. So this goes back to my point about Nick's reaction to religious icons being psychological. Assuming that Nick did kill for survival as a mortal, then the crime is the same, but Nick's *perception* of how it affected his soul is different. Also, Nick did not have 700 years to come to regret his crimes as a mortal. (Are there any still left?) thanx chaya-baila Proud FFFROGgie PS I've sent in some money already, but I was planning on making another donation this month...... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Mar 1996 12:57:23 -0800 From: April Ruskin <aruskin@e.......> Subject: CPR I just came back from taking a CPR course, and it got me thinking. Could vampires administer CPR to humans. (If they wanted to.) I mean, their strength could kill a person. And what about the breathing patterns? Can vampires actually breath more than they have to? Comments anyone? April Ruskin aruskin@e....... "My hovercraft is full of eels." Whenever I watch FK, I always turn on the closed captions. But I never watched Fever. You youngster just don't realize what an UGLY time the late sixties, early seventies were to live in. The fashions were a NIGHTMARE, our teachers were on drugs and our parents were on liquid diets. Do you think we invented Punk Rock because we were happy campers? In Boston in the seventies we wore choking jeans, T-Shirts and Converse high tops. Most of us couldn't afford Doc. Martins, because we dropped out of College and spent all night in the dank clubs, working when we felt like it, so we wore US Surplus army boots. Unless of course we got a job or made a record. ( Natch, we all had leather jackets.) Those who wore the "Seventies" fashions would slither over in hopelessly un-macho packs expecting to tromp the pale, luded out Punks, ..... but I ramble into fond memories. LaCroix in Seventies retro...... "No, no, no, no, no, no, " Just the thought makes my skin crawl. Tracey's wardrobe makes me want to puke anyway, don't encourage her. As for Vachon, If you want to go retro, go in the right direction...... I still have the straight razor I was wont to cut Stiv Bators (RIP) [Dead Boys/Lords of The New Church] hair with, and would be glad to do the honors. I don't mean to be mean........ well, yes I do. As Stiv was fond of saying, When the blood runs cold.... Okay folks, three topics: 1) The Poll About a month ago I began a poll in which I asked the question: As an ending to the show, would you like to see Nick regain his mortality? Basically, out of the 43 replies I received*, only 13 replied that they would like to see Nick regain his mortality. Out of those who replied with a negative reply (that would be30 NO replies), many only did so because they wanted a TV movie or two. * I /think/ I only received 43 replies. See, I have enough trouble keeping track of my keys and remembering my mother's birthday, let alone trying to keep track of all the email I receive on this list. This naturally means there is a margin of error to my little poll, but I think over all, the poll was accurate. 2) Blood taste On the topic of the taste of Natalie's blood, I'd have to go for something down to earth and comfortable, like orange blossoms or peaches. I, however, am totally convinced that my blood would taste either like apple juice or 7Up or both, considering that I consume them in mass quantities on a regular basis. I guess that means that someone should put one of those big red dots on me to mark me as "uncola" for vampires, huh? 3)YKYBWTMFKW... You're looking for a resource for your paper on Arthurian romances for your Medieval Europe class and you come across a book published in Toronto. You think of FK immediately, but when you see the dedication you nearly jump out of your seat. "Look, look," you whisper to your friend excitedly "it's published in Toronto and the dedication is to Jeanette!" She gives you the I-thought-she-had-problems-but-this-is-rediculous look. You then check just to make sure Nick or LaCroix didn't write it while your friend suddenly decides she has to go to the second floor RIGHT NOW and runs for it. There are no more suspicious FK names associated with the book. You find this oddly disappointing, but check out the book anyway. ::sigh:: Thank you for listening to my rambling.
