I still take issue with the concept that because Nick killed in battle,
that he is necessarily a murderer. I'm not disputing the brutality of the
crusaders, I'm familiar with it and am not burdened by myths of the knight
in shining armour. The middle ages (not just the crusades) were a brutal
time, and a man might have killed for any number of reasons (including
that someone was about to kill him) without having been considered a
murderer. There has always been a distinction made in both law and custom
between killing and murder.

I guess the question is, did the mortal Nick consider himself a murderer
and feel the concomitant guilt?

My 4 year old watches the tapes (as I record them evey week) the next day when
everyone else does. Funny, but not one of the kids has ever asked me about the
vampire premise. The most anyone asked (my 12 year old) was why he was drinking
blood out of the fridge. Either they picked up on everything else themselves,
or because between "Goosebumps" , "Interview withthe Vampire" and even some
cartoons (Animaniacs comes to mind which had a particularly hilarious vampire
episode) the kids already know what they are and what they do. Oh, and yea, I
watched Dark Shadows when I was about 12 too. As a matter of fact, I've been
buying the tapes and we get a real good giggle out of them. Even started to
compare notes between the similarities between Nick/Barnabas and Nat/Dr Julia
Hoffman.

First off with the exception of N.B.s 2 or 3 minutes at the beginning you
didn't miss much. Also Nigel's agent must be way better than Chad Everett's
or Morgan(bimbo, bimbo) Fairchild's. Why, you may ask - He was only on for
2 or 3 minutes, had the best lines, got to be evil, then got the hell out of
Dodge!

The uniforms (I don't even want to think about zero g and miniskirts), the
ripped off plots from other shows, etc ad nausium.

Best parts:
1. Nigel's wonderfully evil character (he does EVIL soooo well)
2. Morgan(bimbo, bimbo) Fairchild's getting blown up!
3. Chad Everett getting spiked! YES!!!

ObFK: Well since "Nyah nyah nee boo boo!" as been used already. Hm let's
see. Just be very, very happy that Star Command wasn't an episode

FK does have captions. But even if shows go out to the stations captioned,
the station itself has to be equipped to transmit the captioning signal. I
get B5 from two stations, and until this season, tapes from WSBK had
captions, and from WNDS didn't. WNDS evidently installed the equipment
last summer.

Which would explain why I've never seen second season w/captions, not even
whilst over at the house of the friend who has the killer big-screen tv
with modern captioning.

My question is this: Is there any way to make the captioning PERMANENTLY
visible on a VCR tape, i.e. for those of us who have old-style TVs w/o cc
capability? 'Cause I've found that it's an impossibility for me to afford
a new TV, let alone one with a big enough screen to allow me to see what's
going on...

On the topic of letting kids watch FK, I have shown it to my cousins (8 and
13) and the kids I teach (10/11/12). Of course, when I showed it in the
school hall I picked a very tame episode (kind of hard, actually!). And I
just (as in two days ago) gave my Std 4 (6th grade) English classes an FK
story for their English Comprehension exam! The question that got the
weirdest answers was, "Why do you think Nick became a policeman?" Here are
some of the responses:
- He likes weapons
- He can't get hurt
- He likes catching criminals
- Because he likes hypnotising criminals
- Because if he bites people he won't go to jail. (!!)

And when I asked them to write a story about Nick (I gave last year's class
this same exercise, you might recall), the kids had Nick:
- marrying Cohen
- turning into a bat
- biting the crooks
- marrying Natalie, moving to Namibia (I have no idea why) and having "two
vampire babies".

Sometimes, teaching can be fun. :)

I disagree. Maybe all male children are Cousins, but my 7-year old daughter
is most definately a Ravenette. She has wonderful fashion sense.
She does not watch FK however. It's too intense for her. Certainly many
cartoons are more violent. And sexual content is less than the evening news.
But the cartoons and other shows are filmed in bright, light colors.
FK's overall mood and lighting is dark. This makes it more frightening to
children.
Also, it's *my* time for the TV and to relax. Mommies need to be alone
sometimes. :-)
And, yes, children are born nowing which buttons to push on their parents to

Subject: Re: New Game: Favourite Episodes That Never Were.

With all the X-Files and Due South crossover "eps that never were,"
I feel licensed to add my darling FK/HL "ep that never could be." :) Has
anyone considered that Darius and LaCroix are two sides of the same
coin? LC is almost like an "anti-Darius." Consider:
        1) They were both successful generals in their mortal lives.
        2) They both transformed the lives of their "sons."
        3) They both live by a moral code their "sons" can't quite accept.
        4) They are both, in their relative contexts, extremely ancient
immortals (pre-Methos canon; bear with me).
        5) In the last episode of their first seasons, Darius died and LaCroix
was resurrected.
        6) LC is "Uncle" and Darius is Father.
        7) France (and probably Rome).
In this "never-could-be ep," we would get to see a meeting between
Darius and LC... maybe even in a *flashback*... and, best of all, Nick would
get to pour his heart out to Darius... :) I really think Confession
would do Nick a lot of good, and where else are we going to get a priest
who can truly believe -- much less understand -- him?

Oh, this is an excellent point. I wasn't making a distinction between being
a murderer and a killer and there is a distinction there. However, by the
same argument, it is my opinion that killing as a Vampire for pure survival
is more justified than killing for survival in a religious war. So this
goes back to my point about Nick's reaction to religious icons being
psychological. Assuming that Nick did kill for survival as a mortal, then
the crime is the same, but Nick's *perception* of how it affected his soul
is different. Also, Nick did not have 700 years to come to regret his
crimes as a mortal.

It's terribly hilarious you should mention "Goosebumps." Because Fox started
running its adaptations of some of the stories last Halloween, the librarian
where my wife teaches at the middle school thought it would be nifty to include
one or two of the books in the stacks. Needless to say, the new principal this
year (maybe to make good with the administration and board) chewed her out and
made her not bring in any more books without explicit pre-approval by her
(principal). Because of this and other incidents, the school doesn't have that
librarian anymore.

Parriott who has been so committed to the project throughout.
I' d like to thank all of our fans both in Canada and the USA who have
given us such wonderful support and tried so hard to keep the series alive.
I'd also like to thank my agent, Larry Goldhar who took me on sight
unseen ten years ago, and has been a tower of strength for me through
 everything.
I'd like to thank my wonderful children Michael and Sam for putting up
with a dad who wears make up.
And finally, I'd like to thank one very special person who has brought
grace and compassion and caring into my life, and has shown me that there is
more to life than just passing time; Louise, I love you.
         Thankyou."

It was a very moving moment for me.

Actually, I think some local stations might not show captions--I know I get
the captions when I watch Bab5 on the Boston channel but _not_ on the NH
channel. There's one ep of FK (right after USA pulled out, 'cause I remember
wondering if that's where the funding went) that seemed to be only partially
captioned, too. Personally, I want to get a job as a captioner, 'cause they
always make silly mistakes and it annoys me (although if I was sitting at a
terminal for hours on end I'd probably screw up, too) _and_ you get to find
out about the shows in advance (although I'd probably get assigned to do
"Baywatch" <jiggle, jiggle>)

I want to publicly thank our dear Laura for the generosity in sharing her FK
goodies -- I suspect it took a lot of work to make them. And what a
brilliant and fun way to provide the WAVs: in themes! I'm sure that method
of presentation will greatly help newbies and other non-FK experts to sort
out the many offerings.

For Knighties and Ger fans who don't already know, Laura also manages the
Lucard homepage (from "Dracula, The Series" in which Ger had a recurring
role as Klaus). It's at http://www.dpcc.com/dpcc/assoc/lpetix/lucard. Hmmm,
perhaps when y'all make requests for FK WAVs (per Laura's post), you could
convince our most generous former Cousin to provide some Ger WAVs from that
show, as well? ;-)

Speaking of offerings, I recommend to anyone who missed it, Laura's
brilliant FK fan-fic piece from last year, "Blood Is Thicker Than Water."
Not only is it very well written and creative, she also keeps Janette, Nick,
and LaCroix true to their characters as she unfolds the story of Muriel,
child of the Roaring '20s and ... (you have to read it to find out). ;-)
BTW, Miklos is in there, too!

In "Let No Man Tear Asunder," Nat is chosen because of her extrememly rare
blood type.

I just came back from taking a CPR course, and it got me thinking. Could
vampires administer CPR to humans. (If they wanted to.) I mean, their
strength could kill a person. And what about the breathing patterns? Can
vampires actually breath more than they have to? Comments anyone?

Yes, the ones on USA do have closed captioning (well, one the ones I
watched). Whenever I watch FK, I always turn on the closed captions. But
I never watched Fever.

it has come to my attention that someone else is going by my sig as
the 'diane with one n.' as i have been set to no mail for some time
(the posts about physical violence really got to me), i have missed
to whom this is refering. i started using 'diane with one n' to
differentiate myself from the other dian(n)es on the list. *now
what do i do*? ;)

btw, whether or not i stay at the mail setting depends upon how
things are on the list. i hope that people are in a much better
frame of mind these days -- i hate that most of the time i come
back, there seems to be negative feelings at that time. here's
to better days. :)

Subject: Flowerpower on FK--NOT!

You youngster just don't realize what an UGLY time the late sixties, early
seventies
were to live in. The fashions were a NIGHTMARE, our teachers were on drugs
and our parents were on liquid diets. Do you think we invented Punk Rock
because we were happy campers?

In Boston in the seventies we wore choking jeans, T-Shirts and Converse high
tops.
Most of us couldn't afford Doc. Martins, because we dropped out of College
and spent all night in the dank clubs, working when we felt like it, so we
wore US Surplus army boots. Unless of course we got a job or made a record.
( Natch, we all had leather jackets.)

Those who wore the "Seventies" fashions would slither over in hopelessly
un-macho packs expecting to tromp the pale, luded out Punks, ..... but I
ramble into fond memories.

LaCroix in Seventies retro...... "No, no, no, no, no, no, " Just the
thought makes my skin crawl.

Tracey's wardrobe makes me want to puke anyway, don't encourage her.

As for Vachon, If you want to go retro, go in the right direction...... I
still have the straight razor I was wont to cut Stiv Bators (RIP) [Dead
Boys/Lords of The New Church] hair with, and would be glad to do the honors.

I don't mean to be mean........ well, yes I do. As Stiv was fond of
saying,

                           When the blood runs cold....

Subject: A poll, blood taste, and YKYBWTMFKW..

 Okay folks, three topics:

1) The Poll

About a month ago I began a poll in which I asked the question:

As an ending to the show, would you like to see Nick regain his mortality?

Basically, out of the 43 replies I received*, only 13 replied that they would
like to see Nick regain his mortality. Out of those who replied with a
negative reply (that would be30 NO replies), many only did so because they
wanted a TV movie or two.

*  I /think/ I only received 43 replies.  See, I have enough trouble keeping
track of my keys and remembering my mother's birthday, let alone trying to keep
track of all the email I receive on this list. This naturally means there is a
margin of error to my little poll, but I think over all, the poll was accurate.

2) Blood taste

On the topic of the taste of Natalie's blood, I'd have to go for
something down to earth and comfortable, like orange blossoms or peaches. I,
however, am totally convinced that my blood would taste either like apple juice
or 7Up or both, considering that I consume them in mass quantities on a regular
basis. I guess that means that someone should put one of those big red dots on
me to mark me as "uncola" for vampires, huh?

3)YKYBWTMFKW...

You're looking for a resource for your paper on Arthurian romances for
your Medieval Europe class and you come across a book published in Toronto.
You think of FK immediately, but when you see the dedication you nearly jump
 out of your seat.
"Look, look," you whisper to your friend excitedly "it's published in
Toronto and the dedication is to Jeanette!"
        She gives you the I-thought-she-had-problems-but-this-is-rediculous
look. You then check just to make sure Nick or LaCroix didn't write it while
your friend suddenly decides she has to go to the second floor RIGHT NOW and
runs for it. There are no more suspicious FK names associated with the book.
You find this oddly disappointing, but check out the book anyway.

::sigh::

Thank you for listening to my rambling.

Apparently they can. In the second season episode (I've forgotten the name)
where Natalie's goddaughter is killed, Nick administer's CPR to the suspect
 while Schanke calls for backup.
