In a passage I just read, Jamie tells Claire that his young great-nieces and nephews call him "Nunkie". I hadn't thought of that mockingly endearing name for LaCroix it n a long time. :-D Laurie of the Isles Laudon1228@y....... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2018 21:59:41 -0700 From: Andrew Caruthers <slinter@j.......> Subject: Re: Blast from the past Can you translate it for us mere Yanks??? As I recall from previous posts on the matter, "Nunkie" is an endearment for "Uncle". Many Cousins referred to Lacroix as "Uncle" - I forget the thread behind that. (IIRC, "Cousin" referred to two listmembers playing similar "evil pranks" on a Knightie either on the list or during what became the First War... the actual details come from before my time on-list.) There was a subfaction of Cousins who played extreme (call it groupie-ish?) adoration of "Uncle", referring to him as "Nunkies". Their faction, "Nunkies Anonymous" ("NA" for short), was one of the most prolific War factions. Their headquarters included a shrine with a pool the bottom of which was a mosaic of Lacroix; they held pagan-like rites taken from the sort of rites we believe ancient Romans celebrated; and they got into a large, multi-faction bar fight that was often the highlight of the middle Wars (I'm going to say 3 through 10, if I recall correctly). The leader, Bonnie Rutledge (later Bonnie-the-Llama, long before llamas became trendy and punny), was also known for wearing "non-sensible shoes". During the last War in which the faction participated as such, the Shrine was demolished in a fire or explosion. Of course, nobody -- real, canonical, or NPC -- was injured... ----- Looking through my archives, I found a 2001 NA "getting to know you" questionnaire. Quite a bit has changed since then, but some things are still close enough for fanfic work... >At 03:11 AM 3/12/2001 +0000, you wrote: > >>NUNKIES ANONYMOUS GET TO KNOW YOU QUESTIONNAIRE!!! >>********************************************************************* > > >>My name is: >Brenda Bell > >>1) What's your favorite type of cereal? >American Oatmeal (rolled-flatter-than-paper oats, not the >whole-grain Scots-Irish stuff) > >>2) Shoes: Sensible or non-sensible? >Definitely sensible > >>3) LaCroix: Evil or misunderstood? >Both > >>4) Do you have any phobias? >Diagnosed or undiagnosed? > >>5) List your three favorite albums/CDs. >Artist/Title: >The Chieftains/Fire in the Kitchen >The Boston Pops, Keith Lockhart/Runnin' Wild >Blackmore's Night/Under a Violet Moon > >>6) Name a musician/musical group whose popularity annoys you. >Can't think of any offhand... > >>7) Nick: Angsty or misunderstood? >Misunderstood > >>8) Name your favorite movie. >not sure... it's a tossup between Excalibur, Highlander (the >original movie), and The Three Musketeers/The Four Musketeers >(originally filmed as a single movie during the 1970's, but >distributed as two separate films) > >>9) Name your favorite civilization(current or historic) >don't have a *single* favorite...
