Subject: Archive access If you are having trouble accessing the archive because you are getting a "403" error I need you to email me directly at stephke@i........ That means I have blocked your IP address because I have been getting a lot of spam from your network. (No you can't control it.). An IP address is like a street address. If you live in Los Angeles you will not have the same address as some one in Paris. That means that if you can access the archive from your pc it doesn't do any good to send me an email trying to help someone else if that someone else is having a problem. They need to email me directly. I worked on it for several weeks after the war was over; but then the "buzz" wore off, and other things beckoned me elsewhere. It's pretty well finished now, though, barring edits and corrections. Those who are curious can find it here: http://foreverknight.wikia.com/wiki/FKWar_14 The top of the page contains the fairly succinct, factual stuff: who was playing, how long it lasted, and so on. Then, in the middle, you have a summary of the story, as it was told in the war posts. It's not quite day to day, though it *is* subdivided into sections. Instead, I made some attempt at organizing it into a coherent narrative. People who participated might like to take a look and make sure I didn't leave out any significant events, especially those particular to their faction. (You can go straight to the Synopsis here: http://foreverknight.wikia.com/wiki/FKWar_14#Synopsis ) Finally, at the bottom, is a long--perhaps overly long--discussion of the behind-the-scenes events. All wars have them, and they can get fraught. However, I think most people who took part in War 14 will agree that it got particularly difficult at times. Having been a player, and also having corresponded with the War Mistress afterwards, I've tried to see both sides of what went on. *And* I've tried a bit of analysis (for what that's worth). Anyway, you can find that here: http://foreverknight.wikia.com/wiki/FKWar_14#Behind_the_Scenes Just in case anyone is curious: no, I do not know who the War Mistress was. Our correspondence was through the e-mail account she set up for the war. Actually, if you think about it, each of the wars has had a plot. It's just that the first few wars were all bound up with the rivalry between the factions, especially the Cousins and Knighties. I mean, War One may have started more or less spontaneously; but, if you wanted to, you could still summarize a "war premise" for it. "Responding to the discovery that some FK fans prefer other characters, Lacroix orders his followers to "persuade" everyone to join the Cousins. They decide to start with the Knighties...." That's as much a plot as any other. It's just that, in the early wars, the plots didn't involve a map, or stolen notebooks, or characters suddenly swapping bodies. I appreciate that you yearn for days of yore. Do people still feel that level of rivalry today, though? I mean, there's a reason why the wars shifted to a different sort of plot. It's because the inter-faction rivalries turned into a game. One advantage of picking a plot is that it gets things going. Consider the start of the last war. Yes, I agree, War 14 was about as far from a success as one can imagine. But consider what its opening days would have been like *without* any plot. People wrote their getting-to-Toronto posts, and then just...waited. Everyone seemed to want to respond to someone else's actions. Basically, they were waiting for the first attack; but the trouble is that, when *everyone* is waiting for someone else to attack, then there's no action at all! Just think of this happening: (FAN A stumbles into the faction HQ, dropping a too-heavy suitcase that just misses FAN B's toes.) FAN A: So, here we are. Twenty years, wow! FAN B: I know. Hard to believe, isn't it? (FAN A opens the case and takes out her medication. FAN B goes and gets a glass of water. FAN A takes her pills.) FAN A: So what're we going to do? FAN B: Wait for someone to attack us, I guess. FAN A: Who? FAN B: Well, we'll find out when it happens. (That evening. No one else has shown up...yet.) FAN A: What're we going to do now? FAN B: Wait for the mid-war party? FAN A: Who's doing that this time? FAN B: Gee, I dunno. FAN A: Anyway, that's next weekend. FAN B: Yeah, we've got days yet. (Two days later.) FAN A: Maybe *we* should attack *them*? FAN B: Okay. (pause) Attack who? FAN A: Gee, I dunno. (Next day...all quit out of boredom. End of war, end of Wars.) "Another choreographed war"? No, I don't want a war that involves some micro-managed clue-solving treasure-hunt, or the like. In fact, I'd much rather not! However, if you cast your mind back *further* than last January--say to War 13--then a lot of fun can be had out of a few pairs of lost socks.
