I for one and delighted to know we have this to look forward to beginning in
September. Thank you, Nancy.

I would need to make an exhaustive search of my archives to dig up
information on Old School List Days. Also, I have somewhere in a box in
my closet, the original small notebook I wrote names and email addresses
down from when I founded the list.

However, in a quick peek through the archives, I found this little
nugget of joy. Dated July 12th, 1996, at 8.38am EDT, I posted a note
entitled 'Beware...'

... listowners on sugar.

You put your left fang in,
You take your left fang out,
You put your left fang in,
And you shake your prey about
    You do the neckie, Nickie
And you bring 'em all across
    That's what it's all about.

Hey, people, lighten up. :)

----

I was a very silly person then, I am now too. And I'm grateful that
some of you have stuck around for the long haul (HI NANCY!) and still
continue to chime in with something. We have indeed had some great days
on the list, some not so great days, but on the whole, I like to think
of this place as one of the nicer and more respectful hangouts on the
internet. And I'm proud to have been a part and will continue to /be/ a
part of it. Our lovely postmaster, Bill Verity at Penn State, has done
us a kindness far above and beyond anything what many other site owners
can and will do... he gave us a home that was stable and a place to be
found by other FK fans. There has always been The List, and there is no
other for FK fandom with quite the... hmm, what's the word I'm looking
for?... longevity? Singularity? Help me out, writers! :)

Y'all have done well.

Jaye,
List Founder and Elder Stateskitty.

PS, did you know the list will be... EIGHTEEN years old in December?

Ah, I'd love to be able to look through archives of that list!

I remember when Eerie and her sister would sart posting even before
the first airing of an episode was finished. There were other quick
posters too, but it's easy to remember a name like Eerie.

Oh, my. I did hit kind of an elegiac tone, didn't I? The truth is that,
even though those days must seem long passed to those who were there, for
those who were never part of that hectic community, FK fandom still usually
seems alive and well. Okay, maybe not quite as active as it could be,
especially this summer--but far from *dead*. Maybe it's the heat. After
all, just a few months ago, there was a nice little group of us ardently
writing away for FK Fic Fest. There was certainly a sense of community
there--perhaps an echo of the cameraderie of the Challenges of yesteryear.

When War XII happened, I didn't take part. I was new. I had little idea of
War. Also, I was in the throes of HTMLing my brand new website and posting
episodes of FK4.
However, I certainly read the posts as they came in with great
eagerness. I tried to fit together the time line, since they didn't arrive
in order--not even, sometimes, when the writers were from the same faction.
Believe me, I thoroughly *enjoyed* that War (even if it was only a half-pint
size).
Since then, though, I've come to realize how much of what was going
on back then vanished above my head and beneath my feet. Of course, I got
the interaction of the factions, as they played tricks on one another and
held carnivals and parties--all that stuff. But I did *not* get references
to things that had happened in previous Wars. Those things were the warp of
the tapestry; but I simply missed most of it.
I think one reason I wrote yesterday the way I did was--weird though
this may seem!--because I'd just finished doing a Wiki page for the little
Raven's Cellar site that Cousin Mary had put me on to. She mentioned that
the DPs had a running gag throughout War XII about the Raven's Cellar.
(Huh??? Yeah, there were definitely jokes that passed me *totally* by.)
Similarly, last year, going through the old GeoCities sites, I
discovered that many factions had "headquarters" where they stayed in
Toronto during a War. These had, I guess, got written into story lines at
one time or another in previous Wars. But that was another thing that I
didn't spot in 2004.

Clearly, there's a lot of this sort of lore that newer fans simply don't
know. In that, of course, you are right: "that train has long passed us
by"--or, at least, passed *us* by. Usually, newbies get initiated. In our
case, not so much.

For the past couple of years in the fall, there have been posts on FORKNI-L
in which people have hinted that another War would not be unwelcome. (Maybe
it's not a coincidence that, each time, it's happened around the anniversary
of War XII.) Neither time was there a lot of immediate, "Oh, yes!
Let's!!!"-type of reaction. On the other hand, no one tossed a bucket of
cold water, either. Rather, it was pointed out that November was not the
best time to propose War, what with Christmas in the wind. (Then, after
Christmas, the list had drifted off to other things.) I do remember someone
else who was relatively new saying that wished the Wars were still going.

We may not be the most active fandom at the moment, but with the support
that people are giving we are going to be the most documented! <gr> And
Greer is going to be busy for awhile. <lol>

Akkhh! The list is almost old enough to vote. Of course, that's also old enough
to be responsible for its actions ... <eg>

Of course FK fandom isn't as active as it was when the show was on the air and
in first run, but we're still here and we still care. That speaks volumes.

Sorry, Lisa, this was meant to go to the LIST.

It certainly does. When I wear my T-shirt to cons or to Medieval Faires,
many people still recognize the fandom. And, now that my neices have gotten
into /Twilight/, they can't believe that their "old" aunt used to do a lot of
the same things. I have to keep my black velvet cape under lock and key these
days!

Since I was trying to find some things to send to Greer, I found lots of FK
memorabilia in my journal/scrapbooks. I'll bet many of us old timers have
costuming pictures, fangs and all, that rarely see the light of day these days.

I even found the program and the list for the scavenger hunt from the FK
minicon from Toronto Trek '95!
Someone mentioned LCA as being as close to an "official" convention as we
ever got. But I have to think that the Gertherings ranked right up there, and
for get togethers after the series ended, the opening of Post Script Productions
in Stratford in 2005 really showed how the fandom had stuck together. The
memories of GWD, Nigel Bennet, and Scott Wentworth hanging out like the
3-musketeers, is something I'll always treasure.
