I agree that Nick might sacrifice his life to save another in the belief
that somehow this somehow might redeem his soul. However in the case of
the pipe bomb, I doubt he had time to think it through. As I recall the
person bringing in Nick's body told Natalie the robbers had thrown the
bomb at him. In which case it wasn't his decision to be blown up.
