I'm working on a N&N fan fiction and need some information. How quickly can
a couple get married in Toronto, Canada? Would the person be a judge or
what? I need a quick wedding with the person performing the ceremony to go
to a location, not have it in a govt. building.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Deborah

My guess would be about a week to get a marriage licence and line up a JP or
marriage commissioner to perform the wedding, based on my own experiences here
in Alberta. (Justices of the peace are different from "regular" judges.) Of
course, a Saturday wedding would be pretty much out of the question on such
short notice.

But this is based on life about 20 years ago. . . Today, getting the licence
might be a bit quicker, since everything's more computerized now.

Okay, this may have been mentioned before, but I was
in the grocery store with my mom today and noticed
"LaCroix sparkling water" <g> My first response was
to start laughing, then I started wondering if our
favorite evil vampire started trying to con money out
of mortals...

;) Of course, my mom looked at me like I was nutz
until I explained.

Here's some more info on getting married in Canada; it sounds like you can just
pick up the marriage licence right away, if all your paperwork is in order.

"Do we need a marriage license?
Yes. Officials in most cities and towns in Ontario and British Columbia can
issue marriage licenses. In Ontario, go to any city or town hall. In British
Columbia, go to any Office of Vital Statistics. At least one of you must appear
in person to get a license. You'll need to bring identification for yourself,
such as a birth certificate or passport. You'll also need photo ID for both
parties. You don't need an appointment, but you should call ahead to find out
the office hours. There is no waiting period. The fee varies depending on where
you get the license, but it should be around $100. The license is valid for
three months from the day it's issued "
(from the ACLU website http://www.aclu.org/getequal/rela/canada.html)

And here's a discussion of the difference between an Ontario judge and a JP
(both of whom can perform weddings):

It looks like Ontario is planning to have marriage commissioners, but hasn't
gotten around to doing it just yet.

Nick (and any other cop) and Nat are both likely to be on good terms with a few
judges and/or JPs, because they are both frequently in court--Nick to obtain
warrants, lay charges, and request subpoenas (all things that JPs can do), and
Nat giving expert testimony before a judge.

And now I have this vision of Nick and Nat bursting into on the night court,
waving a marriage licence and saying, "Your Worship, could you please take a
brief recess to marry us?"

And due to this 'good term' theory N&N could also have the judge or JP come
to the loft? Oh you know me so well. You know all I write are N&N tales. I
chuckled at your image of N&N bursting into a night court. <BG>
