Yep, I remember the Q&A.

And sure, while I am still in Columbus (moving to Phoenix in two months), I'm
all for hooking up with another FK fan. Unfortunately, my new VCR (bought
one last night after learning that FK was gonna be on week days at a 11a) is
being a pain. I forgot to turn it off for the timer, so I missed today's ep.

Anyway, I sent you directly my number. Give me a buzz.

Chao,

Brian

started re-recording my episodes directly onto DVD-Rs. Of course, this is

A VCD is an mpeg file on a cd that also has a couple of other files on it so a
standalone dvd player (one that can play vcd's) knows how to play it.

*nods* Which is the other reason I won't be getting a burner for a
while. Expense and bugs both need to clear up first.

Speaking as she who burns the VCDs of Apocalypse West music vids, yes
and no. You're right for the most part as regards watching them on a
computer, although the speed of both your CD-ROM drive and your system
affect that. But that's not my first-choice way to watch a TV show --
truthfully, I'd almost rather watch my poor dying tapes.

Most set-top DVD players do play VCDs, but with varying reliability, and
there are other headaches involved there because a lot of players are
persnickety about what kind of media they like, to the point where I get
the make and model of the person's player and check the compatibility
chart at VCDHelper.com before burning each individual disc. (I called
our Toshiba many unprintable things in the course of learning the ins
and outs of making the darn things, let me tell you!) So in practice,
it's much the same sort of hurdle Marg is talking about with DVD
burners. And while VCD quality is still quite good, once you get it on
a full-size TV screen there is a noticeable difference between it and
DVD. SuperVCD (which uses MPEG-2 encoding, the same as DVDs; regular
VCDs use MPEG-1) is somewhat better, but still not quite there because
of the resolution you use to create a standard compliant disc. (352x240
for VCD, 480x480 for SVCD, and I'm blanking on the numbers for DVD, but
it's better.) Also, far fewer players can stomach them.

To do this properly, it's going to be a pretty long-term project in any
event -- it'll take a while just to hammer out a system for identifying
and digitizing the best possible copies of three seasons. With any
luck, DVD burner tech will catch up with us by the time we do.

I took a day off Monday to watch the marathon. We have three VCRs in
the house, so I taped it on all three machines. Unfortunately these
three VCRs are almost as far apart as they can get in the house, so
the tape switch was a challenge - especially as it is hard for me to
walk. So, I have three sets of the marathon with ALL the commercials
from South Carolina and none of them have the first part of "A Night
in Question". Sigh.
I'm not going to have time to watch them to make sure they are
intact (it's lack of time, not lack of interest, trust me), but I
didn't see any problems with the VCRs so I think that they are ok.
If anyone wants one of the extra two sets, knowing those problems in
advance, I'll be glad to send them the tapes.
Please let me know OFF LIST!

I normally just lurk on this list but I bumped across a news article today
that is just begging to be manipulated into a piece of fanfic. Beware this
article is twisted, sad and more than a little sick but when I read it I
thought of the show (which proves how sick I am I guess). I figured I'd
throw the idea out there and maybe it'd give one of the writers on the list

Memories?

I have none - I have never, ever seen the show.

Not even a single songvid.

My encounter with FK began through Rhiannon's Shaw fanfic, and she sent me
on a search for sound clips so I could hear LaCroix's voice.

So two CD-ROMs full of sound clips and pictures later, I have still not
seen an ep.

Imagine my pleasure when I found out SciFi is running the show again.

My only question now is - are they cutting anything on this run? I know FX
has chopped the Buffy eps a lot in their rerun....

Also, does anyone know if the show is available commercially (DVD or video)?

Worry. Remember what happened when they found out about Jean Graham's novel?
All proceeds of those were going to *charity* and they still sent out their
attack dogs! As ridiculous as it sounds, my understanding is that even if
just cost of media (tapes or DVDs) and postage is charged, it's still
illegal. Personally I think this should be changed in the case of things
that are not available commercially (i.e. I think it should continue to be
illegal to distribute copies of Lexx because it is available commercially,
but not to distribute copies of FK because it is not)
, so long as it's done free, for cost of media and postage, or in exchange
for a donation to charity...in other words, no profits to be made by the
dubber whatsoever, strictly at cost. But REALLY what I want is for FK to be
available commercially on DVD!!

Before we get too rough on TPTB and their "attack dogs," let's remember they've
been *very* generous in allowing us to exchange episodes on video for all these
years for just the cost of the tape and postage. Oh, no doubt they know we are
doing it and it is a violation of copyright, technically. But they've allowed us
to do it so we could share episodes and pass on the wonderful FK universe to
other fans.

They could easily pull the episodes from syndication too, and crack down on fan
fiction and fan webpage. They allow us to auction homemade FK items in our
charity and KTK auction, and even have allowed the Stitchers of the Knight to
post FK cross stitch patterns (and there's a big crack down on cross stitch
patterns for other copyright properties...)

I think TPTB appreciate the FK fans more than we know. Of course they could
allow us MORE, but I think they are also being generous at the same time.

Guys, I can't prove it, but I have always suspected that Sony has a mole on
Forkni-l and that that's how they found about about Jean's book. So please be
careful about talking onlist about burning DVDS of the whole series and things
like that.

The usual procedure is to inquire if someone who can help with copies can
contact you offlist. They've never objected so far to plain copies as long as
it's only the cost of the blank tapes and postage. So far they haven't objected
to fanfic, or Fkfic-l wouldn't exit. The problem is anything that looks like
serious copyright infringement.

That's also why we tread very carefully when it comes to selling FK items on
Forkni-l, unless it's for charity. Even then we sometimes have to turn down
requests to advertise FK charity items.

Please don't make a direct announcement on list. We had one very tense situation

Also, in regard to present activities of former FK cast, crew and staff, we
don't talk about anything that hasn't been officially announced in the media.
This is because one former FK employee almost lost a later job after the word
got out on Forkni-l that the employee definitely had it. The real situation was
that they were still negotiating. The producers thought the employee was
responsible and was trying to pressure them.

Needless to say I guess, that one was supposed to go
private. Sorry, I'm lacking sleep these days.

(posted with McLisa's permission)

It's not all FK, and it's not a con, but LCA (Lights,
Camera, Auction!) held every October in Toronto always
has a good representation of FK fans attending.

LCA was started by Nigel Bennett, John Kapelos, and Jon
Cassar. (The first one was actually Bridging the Knight
in San Francisco.) At this auction items from films and
television, primarily from productions done in Toronto,
are auctioned off for charity.

Jon and Nigel are the primary auctioneers, but actors
from a lot of shows attend to help auction off items
from their shows. As for FK, besides Nigel and Jon (who
was a cameraman and then director on the show), we've
had Kathryn Long (Divia, now all grown up!), Nick Gray,
producer, and technical crew like props guys, stunt
guys, and so on, attending.

I've attended LCA 1 through 4, and have had a blast at
each one. It's a wonderful chance to get together with
FK fans, buy something, and hobnob with actors and film
people in a nice setting.

The website for LCA is www.mpica.org.

The difference here is that Buffy has an enormous fan

This is true.

But maybe if FK was placed in a better time slot when it first came on the
aire, it would have a larger fan base. Also as far as merchandising goes, if
we had our own FK mdse. offered to us legally, then we would also have a
larger demand for it. True money talks so does advertising.

This is how I took it. I thought Nick knew he
wouldn't get there in time, so he yelled out while
still flying.
