The *Revised* Version of the Optimists' Club FAQ. Read on!!! (It's not your usual O.C. FAQ anymore!!! <G>) ******************************************** Optimists' Club FAQ Version 2.0 (revised January 25, 1996) Felicia Bollin (AriCon@a.......) *** Do you like Season Three? Join the Optimists' Club! *** Has the frightening possibility of losing this beloved show for good awakened a zealous passion in your soul? If you have recently discovered a deep and abiding understanding of Tracy and even found yourself drooling over Vachon instead of dwelling on his tangled mane, beware!!! You too may be exhibiting the signs of an Optimist! It's very simple. Here are some of the frequently asked questions: *** Do I need to like everything about the third season to join? *** Not at all. You only need to feel that the third season so far is good overall, or that there is cause for optimism, or both. (Fight for "Sons of Belial", "Fever", or "Human Factor"!) Or, you can become an Optimists' Club Auxiliary, if you think it's too soon to say. *** How do I join? *** Just put "Optimists' Club" anywhere in your sig. It's that simple! (To cement this resolve, immediately sit down and write a cheerful letter to Lisa Ryder praising her evocation of the character of Tracy. You don't have to mail it, though you should, just sit down and compose a paragraph.) *** What is the motto of the Optimists' Club? *** "Any 'Forever Knight' is better than no 'Forever Knight'." There was FK listed on WWBI-27 in Plattsburg, NY at 3pm Saturday AFTERNOON!!!! Of course, I noticed this at 2:58pm, and after searching the house to find an antenna, I actually got to watch most of "Dead of Night" <VWBG>. I have no idea how long they've been showing it because it is a small independant station that isn't on Montreal cable, or listed in the TV Guide. I checked the tvnet page, and the station was listed, but there was no address :( Anyone happen to have an address for WWBI handy? Everyone in the Montreal area should write them a REALLY nice letter. Wishing she had noticed this station before NATPE, Tracy 76162.2257@c....... Montreal, Que. CANADA ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Jan 1996 17:37:27 -0500 From: Cassie Carter <ccarter@b.......> Subject: Some thoughts about NB's post (long) For some reason, the "virgin and the vampire" fiasco continues to gnaw at me, and Nigel Bennett's recent response to it has set me to thinking about it even more. I just want to try to express what is bothering me, hopefully without sticking my foot in my mouth so far that I can't get it out again. (Please, be gentle.) First, I had several simultaneous reactions to the original "virgin and the vampire" post when I first saw it. Initially, I read the first few lines, then deleted it, because I didn't particularly care to read about some groupie's fling (real or imagined) with Mr. Bennett. But the list members' response to the post was so quick and violent that I went back and skimmed through the whole message to see what all the hubbub was about. That was when my mixed feelings kicked in. Obviously the "virgin and the vampire" post crossed (trampled?) the line in what is acceptable on this list--a line that is expected to be tacitly understood but is nowhere spelled out in the list rules (I just read the FAQ a few days ago). Basically, it's okay on this list to talk about Ger's butt and Ben's butt, to hope for shirtless scenes, and to dream about vampire sandwiches. It's also okay to talk about what the stars are doing professionally (other tv and film roles, etc.) and personally (Ger's move to California). But unlike *most* arenas for the expression of fandom, *Enquirer*-style "reporting" (read "libel") on the stars' sexual exploits and possible legal infractions is NOT welcome here. That, I think, speaks well of this list's standards and its respect for FK's cast. However, I do think that there should be some mention of this unwritten rule, obvious as it may be, in the FK FAQ. That brings me to the matter of the person who posted "the virgin and the vampire" being excommunicated from all FK lists. Again, I have *very* mixed feelings about this. The person who *posted* "v&v" was not the person who wrote it; the person who wrote "v&v" didn't subscribe to the list and didn't have e-mail. Thus, the person who wrote "v&v" is exempt from the penalty imposed, and the person who posted for her is punished in her place. On the one hand, I feel that the list member who posted for the "v&v" author "should have known better," and so being kicked off the FK lists is warranted in that respect. On the other hand, like I said, this "rule" is not written anywhere, and she (I think the poster was female, right?) apparently thought her friend's "v&v" tale was something FK listmembers would be interested in reading (though she didn't say why). Obviously she was fatally mistaken, but I think the mistake is understandable, given the state of "journalism" about celebrities these days. I mean, the kind of cr*p in "v&v" is pretty much standard fare for most popular entertainment magazines and newspapers, as well as for the bulk of fan magazines. That said, I also think it is problematic that the poster was not given a chance to explain herself or her friend's "story," or even to apologize. If she'd had the chance, she may have retracted it, identified it as "fan fiction," or *something*. Instead, she committed *one* serious offense to the group, and she was banished. Now I'm new to this list--I've only been here a month or so--and I recently committed an offense, too. I posted what some people considered a "spoiler" of "Fever," which resulted in some mild chastisement from listmembers. Unfortunately, I hadn't yet read the FK FAQ, but if I had, I would have known better . . . but the responses from you folks on the list corrected me and pointed me to the FAQ, so now I won't make *that* mistake again. Meanwhile, one thing I read in the FAQ is that a first offense doesn't get ya kicked off the list, but that a second offense can. So, to bring this back to the "v&v" poster, I wonder if excommunicating her *immediately* might have been a little unfair, since it was (as far as I know) her first offense *and* because the rule she broke is not written in the list rules. Like I said, my feelings on this are very mixed. On the one hand, I think the "v&v" poster misjudged FORKNI-L readers as well as the content of "v&v"--and though it was a *horrible* mistake, I don't think she knew that it was. There was no formally-stated rule to tell her that what she was doing was *wrong* or which established banishment as penalty for the crime. I mean, marijuana wasn't always illegal in the USA; cops couldn't arrest or jail pot-smokers until there was a law. The problem is that "v&v" was *clearly* hurtful to Mr. Bennett. His recent post made it quite clear that he was upset and felt his character had been maligned. This list needs to state its policy against such hurtful and personally damaging material in no uncertain terms in a *permanent* record. (Someone who joins the list tomorrow will know nothing of the "v&v" fiasco.) Basically, what I am saying is that, whether or not we want to allow the "v&v" poster back into the fold (and I doubt we do), I think the unstated rules of this list need to be stated. If the listowners wish to formally establish personally damaging (libelous) posts as grounds for instant excommunication, and they include a statement of this policy in the list rules, I am all for it. I feel terrible that Mr. Bennett returned to the list only to find that &%$#*! "v&v" monstrosity here. I would have hoped that he would have gotten some pleasure out of all of the SOS efforts that have been going on for the past few months, the tireless letter-writing, blood-donating, charity-giving, conference-going, web-page-making, publicity-generating campaigns; the 100+ supportive messages posted to this list *daily*; the constant praise of the show and its cast . . . We have demonstrated our admiration and respect for him in every way we can. It's too bad the "v&v" nightmare had to taint all of that for him. If you haven't made a donation yet and want to get involved, please feel free to do so (if you're new to the list and want some addition information, please e-mail me privately). Remember, every little bit adds to our spectacular total. And, since I did mention total, our current total is: $7,873.50 {{{{{{{{{{hugs to all}}}}}}}}}} This list is full of truly wonderful people and I'm honored to be associated with you all {{{{{group hug}}}}} Those who have asked about Sony's donation -- if my information is correct, we sent just below 50% of the electronic postcards. Which means that Sony donated less than $5,000 to PAF. So, who knows, maybe we can double Sony's donation :) I'm currently working on the large parchments to be sent to JP and NG and also on the individual certificates about the PAF drive for each of the cast and crew members. I'm still working on the exact wording of the header for the individual certificates. So, if anyone has any suggestions for that tag line, please e-mail me privately. On a related note, I received the following letter from PAF earlier this week: *************************** Dear Lisa, On behalf of the entire Pediatric AIDS Foundation, I would like to thank you for organizing the donation drive to benefit the Foundation in honor of the "Forever Knight" television show. You have provided a unique opportunity not only to raise necessary funds, but also public awareness about the Foundation and our mission. We are grateful that we were selected to benefit from your efforts. Your understanding of the urgency of our work means a great deal to us. Be assured that your donations will bring returns all through 1996 and beyond, as it funds research and programs that will make a difference in the lives of children and families living with HIV/AIDS. I'm sure there's more. Oh, and in a different vein (sorry, I couldn't resist), I just got the Factions FAQ and it was VERY helpful. I forgot who sent it, but thanks. In the FAQ, the writer mentioned an over-abundance of -Packer factions. If this is really a problem for anyone, couldn't Nick-and-Nat-Packers also be known as Natty Knighties? (just a thought) Stephania, who is hereby declaring herself a Nick-and-Nat-Packer. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jan 1996 00:03:54 -0500 From: Maureen McAllister <MoeMcAl@a.......> Subject: Misc. FK items First, for those who think that they could help save FK by getting someone like Rush Limbaugh interested enough in mentioning it to their followers-- PLEASE DON'T! There are more than enough selfish opportunists out there waiting to grab onto anything to stir up their followers, and I do not want them focusing their malevolence on our dear, beloved FK. We need positive notice, not someone looking to put a stake into FK's heart to further their own biases. The cast, crew, and fans have all put too much effort into FK for it all to be ruined by folks who don't care about how good the show and the actors are. SOSFK letter count: I sent letters to Tristar ( JF), USA ( both RP and KK), Sony, and one to the Fox affiliate in Little Rock where I view FK. Emailed one note to USA. SOSFK flyer: Alas, my computer does not have MS Word, so the file I downloaded won't work with my WP program, Could someone please snailmail me a copy of what they have printed out? With a good copy I could canvass a few areas I think will accept the promotion.( Snail-mail address: Maureen McAllister, X.X. Xxx 000, Xxxxxxxxxx, XX 00000-0000). Query: Does anyone have episode copies available for season 1 & 2? I'm willing to pay for S&H and trades. Email me, please -- MoeMcAl@a....... I haven't posted in this list before, though I have been receiving the digests since September. I think there are more than enough good comments and items to keep even those FK fans ( like me) on the outskirts happy. To the cast and crew of FK: Our best wishes are with you all. We know how hard you have worked on the series, each in your own way, and (if it isn't obvious by now) we fans are returning the favor. The dark spectre of cancellation may hang around, but if anyone can suceed, you folks can. Think of how far the fans have gone since December on behalf of you all. Kinda like karma, or a good investment.
