Subject: Spoilers: LK, AtoA, and farewell (long!)

I was tempted to pick a nice <long> message (or a whole digest), reply to
all of it and then stick a "me too" at the bottom... but I didn't. Be
thankful that the rules of correct conduct and "how to be polite" were
drilled into my head as a child! (OUCH!) <g>

That being said, I will add my email voice to the multitude already sent.
I'm glad the fkspoilr list was set up, I had a great time being here, and
I'm sorry to see it go.

I'm permanently on digest (except for brief war periods). It's the only
way I can manage my time more effectively. So while I will admit to
skimming and deleting on occasion, it wasn't often. We've had an
intelligent and funny membership here, hopefully everyone will transfer
to the main list. :)

(is that enough pointless meandering?)
-------------------------------
spoilers for AtoA and LK. I haven't really posted much since these two
aired. They've been brewing in my mind. :)

(definitely more than 4 lines)

I'm going to argue these. Yes, they've probably already been argued (I'm
on digest, remember?) but I'll go ahead anyway.

My version:
Definitely Dead: Schanke, Cohen, Screed
Probably Dead: Tracy, Nat
Probably Alive (sort of): Vachon, Urs, Nick
Most likely Alive: LaCroix, Reese, Stonetree, Janette

Let me state that though this is my <personal> opinion, it isn't the one
I'll be using in various fanfic. <G>

Definitely Dead: Schanke, Cohen, Screed
-----------------------------------------------
Schanke and Cohen: They were both identified as being <on> the
plane, and their corpses were id'ed. You can claim that they were in the
witness protection plan or something, but ... ? I don't like it but
they're dead. Schanke will probably be used as a ghost in future wars.
That'll be fun.

Screed: He (along with <many> other vampires) died from the
virus. It totally destroyed their systems. You can claim that he wasn't
exposed to the sun, but... ? We're talking about a sytemic destruction of
all the cells. Even with the vampire virus (scientific viewpoint) going
on full blast, there wasn't anything <to> heal left!

Probably Dead: Tracy, Natalie
------------------------------------
Either Tracy or Natalie can be easily brought back <if people want!>
Natalie can be rushed to the hospital, and Tracy can be brought back as a
vampire (remember Richard in "I Will Repay"? -- he was declared dead at
the hospital and wheeled away too). That's why I put them in the probably
instead of definitely dead.

But!

By his own admission, Nick "took too much" from Natalie. It all comes
down to whether we trust his judgement or not. If we do, then Natalie
suffered major blood loss, collapsed veins, brain damage and permanent
death. If we don't then we can bring her back. Nick hasn't been known for
his good judgement. :)

Tracy, died at the hospital. Nick didn't bring her across. The
only way she could be <not> dead is if Vachon or Urs revived before she
suffered her final death and brought her across.

Probably Alive: Vachon, Urs, and Nick
-------------------------------------------
I'll take Vachon and Urs first. We didn't see either one exposed
to the sun, and totally destroyed.

1) I'm going to point out that Nick has thought vampires dead before when
they weren't (Hearts of Darkness), so lets discount his claim of Urs and
Vachon being dead.
2) Unlike Screed, their body systems did not suffer extreme cellular
damage. Vampire body parts <can> be reattached.
3) They were, in effect, poisoned. What I'm asserting is that their
systems <shut down> in order to repair the damage.
4) Vachon is slowly healing in his grave, and the only way Urs is
permanently dead is if she's cremated before she revived or rescued.

Of course, I've been persuaded by recent posts that Urs and LC
were having an affair. No, I don't they they were even remotely suited
for long-term or were "in love", but light companionship is a <different>
matter. :) So in my twisted viewpoint, LC collect Urs body for burial
before it was cremated!

Nick: ARGH! Yes, there is the possibility that LC respected
Nick's wishes -- that's why he's in this catagory! I'm not going to
rehash everyone's arguments. Lets leave it at: Would LC <truly> give him up?

Definitely Alive: LaCroix, Reese, Stonetree and Janette
------------------------------------------------------------
We've been assured by TPTB that Janette is alive, and the rest
suffered no calamities that we know of.

LC is <not> going to commit suicide over Nick. Sorry, but
remember that "life is like a ripe peach" thingy?

That's it! my last post to fkspoilr (unless someone wants to debate this).

I've been on the modem <far> too long. My roommate made pointed comments
about 1/2 hour ago, so I'll leave.

It's been great being here.

Hi to everyone on this list

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed picking apart, discussing the
episodes.

I think its great that we had the feedback from the FK staff as much as we
did (thank you Nigel Bennet and Fred Mollin).

I hope that the demise of this lists gives us a great deal of time left on
the other two. I for one need my daily FK list fix.

Just had to get my $.02 in, too. I've been mostly lurking lately, due to
extreme busy-ness in the real life musical area. (Thank goodness)

Anyway, I initially thought I could get by on Forkni-l alone, but as soon
as third season episodes began last fall, I couldn't refrain from
subscribing to the Spoiler list. It's been a wonderful forum to discuss
what hot at the moment, to console each other through the hard times (USA,
LK, etc) and the absolutely rejoice in the excitement of a new and
wonderful episode. The list really cooked during the first showing of
Fever and NIQ.

Thanks to all who participated, owned, managed and babysat the list, and to
all lurkers who just read posts and enjoyed them. That, too, is a form of
participation.

It's been great. Thanks to all.

Uh, oh. I forgot one thing: I appreciated everyone's views. I want to
especially thank those cast, crew members, writers, directors, etc. who
offered their viewpoints onlist. While I firmly believe that everyone's

This is not a good-bye, because while there is no longer a need for a
spoiler list, the fandom's *not* going away. Forkni-l was here before
Fkspoilr was, and it's still here. We're just moving back home for most
of us. I realize some of us can't cope with the volume on Forkni-l, even
on digest. For them, may I suggest the "index" feature of listserv? It
will give you a regular list of the subject lines from the last bactch of
posts. Then you can send only for the posts that interest you. To do
this, send the command "set forkni-l index" (without the quotation
marks) to the listserv address.

If you need more information, send the listserv the command "help index"
without the quotes.

See you all on Forkni-l, I hope, especially Nigel Bennett. Keeper of
the King will have an FK tie-in through you, and I'd think that would
make it a topic for Forkni-l.

Subject: Re: SPOILER: LK: Suicide (long!)

In the last hurrahs of FKSPOIL-R, I felt I had to delurk and
add a few, all right, more than a few final comments. There was
just something about LK that struck home with me. Unfortunately,
I haven't seen it talked about much in the zillions of posts and
thought it deserved discussion. So here it goes... (please
bear with me...)

Let me just open by saying though it was a minor part of Last Knight,
it WAS the major trigger for the entire episode: The suicide of
Laura Haynes, a close friend of Natalie's. Suicide. For those
who have been affected by a suicide, perhaps some of my post will
ring home for you. For those who haven't, please read this and think
about it.

As a person that has been personally affected by suicide, I saw the
suicide thread throughout the entire episode of LK and was amazed to see
how it was handled. Suicide is a very much misunderstood topic and
is seldom talked about nor represented well on film, etc. Like many
people, we all tend to think the people who commit suicide must have
many other problems, as Nick said "She obviously had some big problems".
That's not often the case. In many episodes, FK has not been afraid to
delve into difficult topics, and in LK, one of these topics was suicide.
And I think it deserves a little further discussion, so here goes:

Nigel Bennett, Sharon A. Himmanen wrote:

> >Nat could see no light at the end of the tunnel and, in

Maybe she wasn't committing it, but the topic of suicide was surely
on her mind, not only seen in this episode, but perhaps for some
time (the comment "I used to think suicide was sacrilege. Now I'm
not so sure...).

I'm not sure how anyone can say whether it was in or out of character
for Nat. You don't have to be crazy, mentally ill, etc. to contemplate
suicide. Suicidal thoughts are usually triggered by some traumatic
or stressful event. Depression, whether ongoing or short term, also
plays a factor. I don't know how many times I've heard friends and
family of suicide victims shake their heads in denial and disbelief,
"How could they have done that? That's so unlike them. Their problems
were not that serious."

Suicide is not rational. It's usually the result of life's stresses
and losses that the individual feels they can't cope with. An
accumulation of such events over an extended period, can push one's
ability to cope with them to the limit.

Here's some risk factors from a brochure I have on suicide.
I'm listing only the ones that I think may apply here so see if
any ring any bells:
- significant changes in relationships (Nick & Nat?)
- significant losses: death of a loved one, loss of a valued relationship,
loss of self-esteem or personal expectations
( Deaths: Not including last seasons, just this season alone:
Cohen, Schanke, Calvin Tucker, Laura )
- perceived abuse: neglect
( IMHO, I thought it was pretty tacky of Nick to take up & go
to the precinct in the middle of their conversation. Aren't
there about 20+ other policemen working there too?)

> If she had wanted to kill

Not necessarily true. Many suicide victims don't actually want to die,
they just want to stop the emotional pain. Most suicidal people give
warning signs in hope that they will be rescued. Nat may have not been
as suicidal because of the journal and letter Laura left for her,
giving her that "wake up" call. She was going to make that effort
to 'wake up', but I don't think suicide was very far from her mind.

> IMO, there is a world of difference between saying "Nick, drain me,"

> herself is ludicrous. I know this is not what Nigel intended to imply,

A person contemplating suicide is often so distressed, they don't often
see that they have other options. Laura didn't see that she did, but
her suicide, journal, and letter were a "wakeup" call to Nat (maybe
Nat was or was not feeling suicidal prior to this, but I think it was
on her mind during this part of LK), pushing Nat to explore the only
other option she thought she had: life with Nick. Maybe not the only
option, but reread the first statement of this paragraph.

> Natalie saw this chance with Nick as an opportunity to become something
> more, as something life affirming, not as an opportunity to die.

I agree to an extent. Wanting Nick to get cured was one of the other
options in her own mind. But if she/they died, she also believed
that there was another life, an afterlife, where she/they would be
free from the pain of their current lives. Where she thought/hoped
that they could be together. That's probably why she pushed him.
(Ever heard of double suicides?)

> She believed he would be able to stop though she did recognize that there
> was a possibly of accidental death.

On this, I also agree. But, the way I saw it, it was a WIN/WIN situation
for Natalie. Either:
1. The cure works and Nick becomes or begins to become mortal.
2. Nick kills her ("I'm not afraid of death..."), thus going to that
afterlife she believes in. And, Nick would eventually be there
    and join her there.
3. Nick brings her across and she gets to spend eternity with him.

And with all the euthanisia stuff going on, does it matter if she
or Nick kills herself? At least this way, she could find out what
all that 'blood' sharing knowledge was all about.

> Trying to deliberately kill
> yourself and attempting something risky knowing you might get hurt are
> two entirely different things.
>
Not necessarily. When you're feeling suicidal, you tend to tempt fate
a little bit. What have you got to lose? Drive that car a little
faster, walk a little closer to the edge of the cliff...

> price for her foolishness. Sad message, really, from a series that I
> always thought touted faith and trust and the process of working toward

Perhaps she was foolish, as they both were, for not taking a timeout
to look at things rationally. Both were thinking too emotionally.
I think that was one of the tragic messages that the scene was trying to
present. Maybe it doesn't make sense, but how often do emotions
make sense? How often does suicide? Heck, the ending of the show
doesn't make sense to all of us...

But, I still believe that this episode still shows that FK still clings
to theme of 'touting faith and trust', else they wouldn't have
changed the ending, rewrote the scripts, etc. so many times, nor
left the door open for future movies/seasons. If everyone
lived happily ever after or everyone was definitely dead, I sincerely
doubt there would have been as many of us still hanging out here on
the lists and/or working so hard to Save Our Show. Last Knight
was something special. There's a lot of meanings and messages
behind the episode and show. We're never all going to agree and
decide on a common interpretation of it.

A few last thoughts (I promise, just a few):

I also considered the fact that some people think that Last Knight
is going way out of line for Nat and for FK. Just a couple thoughts
from past episodes/seasons:

1. We know very little about Nat's past. It's been mentioned a couple
times that people think something traumatic happened to her, perhaps
an assault or something similar. Something may have occurred that
influences beyond what we've seen in the episodes.
2. A scene that keeps coming up in my mind is from DoN. The last question
she asks Nana: "Where are you?" to which Nana responds "...in a
beautiful place...." Whether Nat 100% believed all this or not,
indications that the afterlife is not so bad has to stop and make you
    think at least a little.
3. Nick obviously got her feelings and thoughts as he drank her blood
(as described in Francesca). If he didn't believe it before, he
had to have known her feelings and beliefs in faith then, as well
as the depths of her pain.
4. Since the beginning, I've wondered: what would drive a beautiful,
intelligient woman to become not only a forensic pathologist, but
to also choose to work the night shift in a morgue? I think the
face that she is successful in her field is wonderful, but I think
    there's deeper meaning behind this
5. Working in a morgue as coroner, even in a police dept, has to be
emotionally and mentally depressing. After major tragedies,
they often have couseling for the volunteers and emergency
personnel to help them deal with their feelings (ex. Oklahoma
City). I would hope that they have something similar for those
that deal with this stuff day-to-day.

Maybe this is going off the deep end a little bit on the topic of
suicide, but I think it should at least be used as a perspective that
we can learn from, if not from the suicide of Laura Haynes, then
from the potential suicide and suicidal feelings of Natalie (and Nick).
Most importantly, we should learn that suicide isn't always committed
by peopel with alot of problems, that doesn't often make sense and
that we all need to learn more and be aware of the the warning signs
and the danger if we or someone close to us might start feeling that
way. Like everything, it's about awareness. The best way to
help someone feeling suicidal is to look for and recognize it, don't
ignore it or ridicule it, and to be a friend and talk to them
about their feelings.

There are some great resources and organizations on the Net about
suicide and suicide prevention. Along with our other wonderful
charities we support as a part of our efforts, and as a tribute to our
show and favorite characters, I think it'd be a wonderful idea to
also support one of the many nonprofit suicide preventation hotlines or
support organizations. Thoughts?

Sorry to send this last message here at the end of FKSPOIL-R. It
was just really bothering me that the topic of suicide was being
treated rather lightly. Hopefully, if you have comments, flames,
etc. to this post, you'll continue them in FORKN-L, or email me personally.

In memory of friends and family that are no longer with us,

Oh, thanks, I'll wait for cable then.

Cousin Cherri, you are in a moo-d. Don't worry, I'm an
anarchist, I'll get you out of that suit, even if I have to burn
it off ya, and I have some ideas who we could fill it with too....

Hey, Margie, do you have the time for the next scheduled ferry to
the Isle of Denial? Heh, heh, heh....

Yes Andy I was sadly disappointed in the fact that he turned against the
IMF. OUR Mr. Phelps as played by Peter Graves would never have 1. Married that
woman, or 2. turned evil.

Although I liked the movie emmensly, once they pulled the switcheroonie with
Jim, I was extremely pissed.

Sounds like fan fiction.

only way she could be <not> dead is if Vachon or Urs revived before she
suffered her final death and brought her across.

Don't forget the big guy has visited Tracy since AtA. He may get some
kind of twisted thrill out of bringing Tracy across. I mean, it could
be VERY entertaining. Like a good B movie....

before it was cremated!

Light Companionship, Would that be a trait of LaCroix Light? And I
notice Nigel said LaCroix *Lite* without anybody jumping in *his*

Speaking as a child of the third season (the only pre-third season ep I've
seen is BMV), and as someone who only learned there were fans online back in
March - prompting me to purchase my computer! - I can only say that my own
reaction to LK was much like that of most others, i.e., I was incredibly
depressed and quite speechless at the end of it. Excellent writing, superb
acting, but much too much death - not what I had come to expect from FK. I
came to know and love all the characters in this season (yes, that includes
Tracy, too!!!), and I can only say that I look forward to FINALLY seeing the
eps that I've heard so much about. The third season has left me hungry for
more, past and future.

I want to encourage everyone to get the word out to those who are not online.
Had I never contacted Paragon, then TriStar to find out about the FK
soundtrack, I would never have known such a wonderful group of kindred (no
pun intended) spirits was out there. I hope, too, that everyone on FKSPOILR
will make a new home for themselves on FORKNI-L. After all, we must keep the
family together!

Me either, Sharon. For me, watching the whole series (1st, 2nd, and 3rd
seasons) was like reading a really great novel. There were interesting
characters, conflict, and an involving plot. But it was like a novel whose
author simply gave up at the end. Imagine Gone With The Wind that ends with
Tara burning down instead of when Scarlett resolves that "tomorrow is
another day". Imagine A Tale of Two Cities ending when Lucy finds her
father instead of Sidney Carton doing a "far better thing" than he's ever
done before. It just feels like instead of "The End" we got "An Abrupt Stop".

Still, I have to say it was worth the ride and I'd pay my nickel to ride
again. ;)

Bye, bye spoiler list. I hardly knew ye.
