From the close-up, I read "172", not "171" -- which would have been the opposite side of the street. If I'm reading Google Maps correctly, it is now a fairly modern corner building with a men's spa and a jewelry store on the ground floor. The Art Deco brownstone to the east - much like the ones in the photo Alison provided - seems much more to Nick's aesthetic. Either way, the sort of place (at the time) where a lot of the down-and-outs would have lived - perfect for alternative lifestyles (including, if needed, hunting - though it would have been a short crosstown hop to the meatpacking district for his beverage of conscience, and a shorter one to St. Vincent's hospital for expired transfusion blood).
