Prayer: An update on my sister (5) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2014 03:27:19 -0400 From: Laura Davies <bratling2@g.......> Subject: Prayer: An update on my sister This is what my brother posted on Facebook today. I appreciate y'all praying for her, and we need the prayers to continue. Her oldest turns six next month, the next one will be four, and her youngest is about to turn one. She's greatly in need of everyone's faith and prayers right now. " Blessed be the Lord, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications. The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him. Updates: So for the first time in a while we've got some good news. 1st the bad news, Sarah will have to do chemo and it will be an aggressive treatment. BEP treatment, a series of (hopefully) 4 (maybe 5) treatments. Each treatment is one week in the hospital, followed by 2 weekly 1 day shots on a 28 day cycle. It is rough and will as the doc put it "knock her socks off". Because this cancer is extremely fast, they want to start on Monday. They are planning to discharge tomorrow, but since we have been in the hospital since the 12th, she'll have 3 days with family before heading right back to the hospital. The good news, this cancer responds well to treatment and doc says a 75-80% chance of putting it into remission after treatment. Every year in the US, there are only about 500 cases of germ cell cancer (the family of this cancer) in the US, the yolk sac cancer-which she has-is even more rare and is extremely fast . . . .it is unbelievable at how incredibly fast this sucker is. It doubles in size on the order of weeks and that makes it extremely difficult to make the best decision with the right amount of information quickly. Going just by her symptoms and what we know now, she probably went from a stage 2 to stage 4 in about 2-3 weeks. Out of curiosity anyone had any experience with Cancer Centers of America? Thank you so much everyone for prayers, support thoughts, etc, I know there are a lot of people who would like to help. I apologize to those I haven't responded to directly . . . I believe in the coming weeks as she goes through chemo there will plenty of opportunity to help. She will need so much emotional support as this will be rough and I will need to try and get back to providing the daily bread as the immediate crisis seems to be passing." Thanks, y'all! Yes it does strike fast. I ballooned up overnight. Chemo definitely will knock her socks off. It did me. I was totally exhausted and was unable to do anything. I struggled just to go to the bathroom. Again think positively. I am still here after 14 years so hopefully she will be too. Steph On 4/24/2014 3:27 AM, Laura Davies wrote: > This is what my brother posted on Facebook today. I have not had experience with them, outside of seeing their commercials on TV. Here is an in-depth article from Reuters about their business practices: <http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/06/us-usa-cancer-ctca-idUSBRE9250L820130306> I personally would not have anything to do with them since their main concern seems to be making money and they are willing to skew their statistics by cherrypicking patients (if you're really sick you need not apply, especially if you don't have a cadillac healthcare plan). But read for yourself and see if their business model fits your own preferences. My best wishes for your sister's successful treatment.
