War One (was Re: Knighties) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 22 Oct 2013 16:32:52 -0400 From: Greer Watson <gwatson2@r.......> Subject: Re: War One (was Re: Knighties) I've been asked by Ronni Katz (Ron the Enforcer) when it was that the Die-Hards showed up. Whenever the "original factions" are listed, there are always six: Cousins, Knighties, Ravenettes, NatPack, FoDs, and Die-Hards. We're usually told that they all appeared just before or during War One. However, when I made my post yesterday, I mentioned only the other five. So that's a good question: when *did* the Die-Hards appear? War One was held in January 1994. War Two was in July of the same year. (Next year will be their twentieth anniversary.) In War One, there *were* people who never picked an affiliation; but they didn't have any particular name for themselves. By War Two, which was held about six months later, this had changed. The Die-Hards introduced themselves to the other factions by leaving a "pamphlet", often slipped under people's windscreen wipers. This "pamphlet" was actually several hundred pages long: it was the Die-Hard manifesto declaring their neutrality. Clearly organization had been going on behind the scenes *before* War Two, since the Die-Hards had a clear story arc laid out for themselves (quite aside from their impromptu interactions as war progressed). They also had a headquarters, though it was not the same as the one they use today. They offered it as a refuge for members of other factions who wanted a "time-out" from playing. To ensure its neutrality, it was heavily defended. So, the Die-Hards were actually only created after War One. Still, they are usually counted among the original factions, and have played ever since.
