The first is a rather astonishing and humbling bit of good news. Next month, on December 9th, FORKNI-L will officially be 20 years old. TWENTY. In this day and age, the longevity of things isn't what it used to be. The fact that the list has survived this long, and has been pretty much a poster child for how people on the internet can and /do/ behave civilly to one another, is extremely gratifying. Back in 1992, when I first petitioned Penn State's listserv postmaster, Bill Verity, for a list, I never could have imagined the places it would take us. Some of you have been here from the very beginning. Many have found us along the way. You have been an amazing group of people to have met, read about online, laughed with, cried about, thought such hopeful things for in times of trouble. We have been blessed with actors who have gone on to other things, but yet still seem to be gratified when we meet them and tell them that we are fans of this show and that we still participate in fannish activities for it. Thank you all for taking what was once a mere whim and turning it into a place where anyone who could be respectful was welcome, where we stayed reasonably on-topic, and folks didn't really give our listowners too much hassle (compared to some of the drama-filled sites out there for other things). My eternal thanks for my successors as listowner, because they took my vision and kept the good ship on the course I'd originally charted. Our current listowner, McLisa, and list gardener, Don Fasig, are awesome awesome folks, and I'm proud of their work with this little seed I planted so long ago. It has, unfortunately, not always been happy times for us. We have lost several who have been near and dear to us, like our beloved Susan Garrett. It is my sad duty to inform everyone that while I was searching for an address so we may send thank you notes to Bill Verity for letting us stay on Penn State's servers 15 years after I graduated... I came across his obituary instead. Bill lost his courageous battle with lung cancer back in September. A celebration of his life will be held tomorrow at the State College Presbyterian Church. I don't recall if any list members are in the area anymore who could attend, but I'd like to ask that everyone raise a glass or say a prayer or whatever you feel comfortable doing tomorrow to thank and honor the memory of the man who gave us a home when he didn't have to, and let us keep it long after he should have actually asked us to leave. Thank you. I started with the list when I was battling an illness. I will always remember the great stories that took my mind off of the pain and started thinking about creating stories. Thank you everyone for your great kindness and creativity. Tears. I found Forever Knight on TV mid to end Season 2... and joined FORKNI-L@l....... in 1997, when I got my first computer. The list and friends that I've made have been very beneficial in my life... Both helped me get through a very difficult time when I was the sole caregiver for my elderly parents. So many fond memories... Gertherings, LCA, and WARS!!!! The WARS have been so much fun. Jean: My gratitude to you, McLisa, and Don for your years of caring and devotion to the list and the community of friends that you have helped to create. These 20 years have gone by in a flash. I appreciate Jean and McLisa and Don, and all the other list members. I do a lot of lurking, but you do a lot of good writing, and I've never been made to feel uncomfortable. Bill sounds like a wonderful man, and I'm sorry for his passing. The FK fandom was my first online fandom home, and the standard to which I hold all others I encounter. I am sorry to hear of Mr. Verity's passing.
