Subject: Souvlakis For Ever: bad formatting

My apologies for the weirder and bizarroid characters in that story. I
found a cool button on my email composer---it's called "remove
formatting"----which I hit, thinking it would solve my problem of
messages rejected by the server (nothing I enjoy more in this life
than pressing buttons without knowing what they do) and then the
result was one big wall of text. Thinking to spare everyone, I hit
"undo remove formatting"; seeing that things were back to normal, I
then hit "send". The result was the big mess of diamonds and questions
marks we all received; *ottobummer* I'm sure there's some kind of
priceless yet puzzling reference right there, but it eludes me.

So, what I will do when 24hrs have passed is resend part 1 first so
you can chuck that mostly unreadable text to the trash bin where it
belongs. Hopefully that will post and make more sense as you read it,
and then I'll send parts 2 and 3 back to back in that order. Whether
they will come through is anyone's guess but I'll try and be back to
see what's up and not leave everyone hanging this time; Father Sun and
Mother Moon willing, I won't be AWOL this week. *ottogrin*

Cadillac dreams and souvlaki wishes to all!

OK: I've figured this out! It's not the "remove formatting" that
caused the weird characters. The problem is that I copied the story
from my September LJ account (it's in private mode now) and the
apostrophes and quote marks have more of a slant and not so vertical
(I guess I should say different font) and the list server doesn't like
them. I'm hard at work trying to remove all of them manually and
replace them with the acceptable ones but it's gonna take me a while
to do this for parts 2 & 3. I'll try later to break open the Bill
Gates app and see if I can do a quick search & replace (but to which
font, that is the question!) but no time now sorry. (Of course my now,
is probably 12 hrs prior to your reading this. The local Toronto time
is now Wednesday, 10:20 am; 4:20pm in Paris and for those of you in
Kiribati, it's now 2:20am on Thursday.) Will do my best to get back
later but might be more of a delay than anticipated.

May your day/night be filled with plenty of Greek food & Polka
background music.
(Sing it with me now: *la, la, la, la, la, la, la.... POLKA!*)

Yasou!

Does anyone know whether the song that plays on the radio, when Schanke
takes the Caddy for a joy ride in Dark Knight, is a real Polka song or by
Fred Mollin or Stan Meissner? I've been unable to find anything. Does it
have a title?

TIA!

It sounded like "Beer barrel polka".

It's not the font that's at issue; it's the "smart" formatting. Use
either the character map or the left ALT key with the separate
numerical key pad (NUM LOCK ON) to replace:
ALT+147 (left double quote) with the quotation mark on the keyboard
ALT + 148 (right double quote) with the quotation mark on the keyboard
ALT + 145 (left single quote) with the apostrophe on the keyboard
ALT + 146 (right single quote) with the apostrophe on the keyboard

ALT + (digits) means hold down the left ALT key while typing the
designated digits on the numerical keypad.

"Save as..." plain text (or text file, or .TXT file) will do a lot of
the same thing.

Hope this helps.

(Now you're scaring me!) Seriously, though: if people like you feel they
do belong there, that's what I wanted to be sure of.

And Gaylin said:

No, that's okay. As long as people feel that the icons belong on the wiki,
I don't mind doing the work. However, there really ought to be a covering
article about them as well--and there I'd like to (sort of) take you up on
your offer.

I'll rough something out. After all, I've got dates and links and the like,
readier to hand than anyone else would. But we both know that, for the
article to be in proper wiki-style, it has to have an adequate level of
objectivity. So once I've done a first version, I would very much
appreciate you then taking a good firm look at it!

Several things in one post.

1. As Brenda Bell said (thanks, Brenda), when a post shows up with equal
signs, etc., the problem isn't the font. It's the fact that listserv
software can only handle plain ASCII. When it gets a non-ASCII character,
it puts the = and the number. To avoid this, look for an ASCII setting in
your mailer or word processor. If you still can't get it to work, feel free
to ask on Forkni-l for advice. Note: the listserv isn't capable of
rejecting a post based on whether it has non-ASCII characters. When it
does reject a post, you get a note explaining why. It can also send you a
note when it distributes a post from you. Let me know if you want that
option. The default is not to have it.

2. I saw an news article over the weekend about widespred internet
server/host outages, which may get worse with Hurricane Sandy. This
explains delays in receiving posts.

3. Don and I have agreed that I will begin doing the reviews for posters
who are on review. This should help, since I'm retired and on the net more
often than he is now.

4. I'm sorry I haven't been around as much lately. I hope to remedy that
soon. It's probably a medicine issue.

I hope I'm still in time to wish our Muslim list members a happy Eid. We
used to have at least one, and of course I've no way of knowing anyone's
religion unless they happen to mention it.
