Subject: Faction icons

Five more factions now have icons posted. The one for the Nothers has been
approved by Liz the Lucky. I've done a pair of icons for the Seducers: the
second shows the variant name "Immortal Seducers". The Early Birds were
more of a chat room group, but are listed on longer faction lists. The
Lurkers were...*very* odd...but took part in a war or two back in the day.
And does anyone remember the Archivist's Assistants? The only faction based
on fanfic!

You can find the icons here: http://greerwatson.livejournal.com/17755.html

Thank you. What's the name of the play?
Mel

Ger and Nigel are in the same play together. Need more
enticement - Nigel's character is named Lucius, he's in full Roman
regalia, (and
like a true vampire, he doesn't seem to have aged any) and there's a fight
scene between him and Ger.

Subject: On Susan's Birthday (was Re: Best Fics Wanted!)

In that startling way that electronic systems sometimes have,
LiveJournal reminded me at bedtime last night that today, August 11,
is the birthday of the much-missed Susan M. Garrett. As we all know,
Susan, who died in 2010, is the author of the second of the
professional FK novels, _Intimations of Mortality_, and before that
she was "Empress of FK Fic" -- her excellence, productivity and
generosity to FKdom are unparalled.

Here on the email lists, we used to have a tradition that August was
"Susan's Birthday Month." For her birthday, she would say in her
email signature, she wanted "lots and lots" of new FK fanfiction...
and she got it! (I like to think that holding the annual FKFicFest
and FKCommentFic games across her Birthday Month would seem good to her.)

In Wednesday's forkni-l digest, Megan asked: "Please, tell me your
favorite fics!" :-)

Susan is my favorite FK fanfiction author. Here are my top-ten
personal favorites among all her FK tales, roughly in order of how
often I reread them:

(1) "False Heart" (1994, PG, ~96K words) and its sequel "Kind Soul"
(1995, PG-13, ~167K words)

(2) "Seduction of the Diligent" (1996, PG, ~11K words)

(3) "Angel Crossing" (1993, PG, ~9K words)

(4) "Knight in Hell" (1994, PG-13, ~15K words)
http://home.earthlink.net/~susanmgarrett/Fiction/hell.htm

(5) "Three of a Kind"
(available only in GWDFC hard-copy zine)

(6) "Peerless Pressure" (1998, PG, ~8K words)

(7) "Coin of the Realm" (1993, PG, ~15K words)

(8) "Justice, Being Blind" (1994, PG, ~40K words)
http://home.earthlink.net/~susanmgarrett/Fiction/justice.htm

(9) "All That's Best of Dark and Bright" (1993, PG-13, ~36K words)

(10) "And Memories, Like Diamonds, Shine" (1994, PG, ~3K words)

Everybody: What other stories by Susan G. are in _your_ personal top ten?

For what it's worth, my FK fanfiction "Recommendation of the Month"
project is still up and running at
http://users.lmi.net/akr/fk/recommen/ as it has been since 1999. I
remodeled last year, finally implementing full CSS, so it should look
a bit less antique.

Admittedly, I've fallen sadly behind this year due to various things,
and haven't updated it since spring. (This is my first multi-month
gap ever! I'm embarrassed.) I do very much intend to backtrack and
fill in the missing months. Actually, I've been pondering possibly
suspending the rule that I have to get each author's permission
*before* recommending her story in the project. It's been getting
harder and harder to reach authors. Perhaps that rule has outlived
its time; I don't know.
