I think that the ring thing has happened in a couple of more recent
fandoms. I know it happened on House with Hugh Laurie and I'm pretty sure
it happened with one of the Supernatural stars as well.

Hi Y'all!
It's that time of year again. And out of pure selfishness (that is I
love doing this!) I am again going to do the FK Holiday Card Exchange.
It works like this:
Anyone who wants to participate sends their name, mailing address,
preferred email address, holidays celebrated and any special instructions
to me, eowyn23@j......., PRIVATELY and I will put
that name and other info on a list. Please put "Holiday Card Exchange" in
the subject
line. On November 27 (the weekend after Thanksgiving) I will email the
list to everyone on it. You then
send a Christmas card to as many people on the list as you want and/or
can afford postage for. You are not obligated to send everyone a
Christmas card if you don't want to. You should receive a confirmation
message from me within a few days after you send the info.
Then just sit back and enjoy all the holiday cards!
As always the address list will be deleted from my files around New
Year's.
