Subject: My FK conference paper

Well, I'm back from the conference. As I expected, I never got out of the
hotel (unless you count joining everyone by the pool Saturday noon for the
big group photo to go in _Locus_). This was the biggest conference the IAFA
have ever had, with over 400 attendees. About 50 of them were authors,
artists, editors, etc. The big names schmooze with each other by the pool.
The others are indistinguishable from us ordinary folks, and go to sessions
and give papers like everyone else.

The conference started Wednesday afternoon, and ran through to Saturday
night, when we had the big banquet. Sessions were run up to 11 deep, with
conference papers, panel discussions, and author readings all running
alongside each other, and then other things scheduled in the evening. What
with two luncheons (as well as the banquet), you hardly have a moment
free--except for meeting up with friends to have dinner in the hotel
restaurant.
I gave my paper late Friday afternoon. About 7 or 8 people were
there, aside from those of us speaking/introducing. That's fairly typical,
especially when the session has three papers that are on completely
different topics.
Things got delayed by about five minutes because the AV guy was a
little late turning up. That means it was me holding things up, because I
was the one with the PowerPoint slides. One of the other presenters said I
could use her laptop; but none of us was sure how to get it to work with the
projector thingie--and even the AV guy had a little trouble because her
laptop was Finnish. (Well, so was she, obviously; but it meant that all the
buttons were labelled in a language no one there knew except her; and she
wasn't an AV tech.)
We got that sorted out; and then I gave my paper: "Sincerest
Affection: Factions and War in Forever Knight Fandom". As I said earlier,
I had to leave out a lot of juicy details about both factions and war in
order to get the basics explained, since--as I suspected--there weren't a
lot of FK fans in the audience. I had to start by telling people what the
show was about and who the characters were; so I couldn't go into a lot of
detail about faction histories.
There were a few questions in the Q&A afterwards, though. I did
manage to slide in a bit more then!

One of the questions I got asked, though, was one I couldn't really answer.
And it was a good question, too. So I guess that means I'll be back
e-mailing the list to find out if anyone remembers.
