I have the program framed because P.N. Elrod and Deborah Duchene signed it. I can pull date and location and guests off of that. It was miserably the dead of winter and we had to battle a huge storm to get there. One of the bigger named historic vampire authors gave a talk. His name escapes me. There was an auction and a dance. There was a room showing eps. and I think movies?? Small possibility I have the 'zine somewhere too. Ah memories, so full of holes. Deborah complimented my eye make up (lots of trailing squiggles) and said that would be something Janette would do and could she use it in the show. This is the memory my 17 year old mind decided to keep. Sadly, there was no more Janette in the show... then - no more show. My god the migraine induced hangover I had the next morning. The weather was indeed truly miserable that weekend. It was a huge blizzard and almost none of the hotel staff were on site, though those that were had been forced to stay at the hotel due to hazardous travel. I remember the single lonely waitress who kept apologizing to our table for making such a long wait and we kept insisting she take our time because we were having fun. The new episode that weekend was special to all of us because somehow Nigel ended up in the hotel room we were gathered in while we were watching and asked us what was on the telly. When we told him which new episode was being broadcast he insisted we'd really very much like it. Genuine and honest like it very much. Not just "Oh you're fans, so you'll like everything we put out." And boy howdy did we ever remember it. (Something about Ger learning how to kiss on screen sticks in my mind for that episode.) The costume show had some great performance, including a metamorphosis and some great acting that included Nigel as well, though those details are a little hazy. And there was the fan dinner too, with the table of "high rollers" who had shelled out some extra cash to sit with Nigel. I remember when one of the panel discussions hit upon the topic of factions. It was only the original factions that existed at that time and the organizers asked each of the factions to stand up in turn. SusanG had handed out Ravenette pins to all of us and when they got to the Ravenettes, DEB STOOD UP WITH US! We all cheered so hard. I also remember being completely blown away that someone was offering up sign language during the panel discussions (she was sitting in my row a couple of seats away from me but I couldn't see her face). I was SO HAPPY that I could "hear" everything. The auction was one of the big highlights for me. Nigel auctioning off the box of cereal sticks out. And the violent bidding over the pair of underpants. Deb's research copy of _Interview with the Vampire_ got auctioned off. But one of the things we'd arranged for that auction centered around three framed prints from the three "interconnected" real-life bars/pubs, complete with pictures and memorabilia. Each bar was controlled by a faction of course. These are particularly memorable because my mom framed them for the auction at her store and shipped them to the hotel for SusanG. The hotel temporarily lost them in the staff offices. Is there anyone on the list who bought one of those? I remember she played some music I'd never heard before like two or three times on the trip and one of the songs got stuck in my head, Sister of Mercy's 'This Corrosion'. Now I always think of FK whenever I hear the song, even tho it has nothing to do with the show. :) I also fondly remember a VERY COLD trip to Milwaukee to meet some other fans and tromping around up there back in the 90s. And of course, it's MARSCON time next weekend, so hopefully dear Nancy Kaminski can visit the same old hotel (it's got a new name now) and make it three years running we've met up there to shoot the breeze. :) As for me, I'd never forget about the list, even tho I don't post much at all. However, I'm in the process of buying a house here in Cincinnati, so that's consuming most of my non-work time. I'm really excited, as this is my first house, so squee! Hope to hear all our friends down in NZ are okay! My god the > . . . . This is SO much fun reading about. I was an original broadcast showing fan, (how many of you turned off the channel when the "Jerry Show" came on 'cause you didn't realize the first time it was shown that it was part of an FK episode?) But, I was an internet, bulletin board idiot and had no idea that there was this fantastic fandom out there. I thought I was the only one in the state who watched the show! I didn't discover this list and the thousands of fanfiction stories until about five years ago. Hallelujah, I thought, I've been saved! Hundreds, thousands of FK stories to go through -- and the best thing about it is that so many of them are so good. In any case, this all means that I missed all of the excitement, the cons, the Gertherings, awards, etc., so these reminiscences are fascinating, entertaining, and wonderful. I can finally get to one of the cons, if only sby econd hand. Thanks for sharing all this stuff (and to Greer for gathering it all together).
