Susan was an amazingly talented writer and seemed to me to be an all-round gracious person. In the 90's, her fanfic was a perfect point of entry to fans of the show who were newbies to the world of online fandom and fan fiction, myself included. I see that she still has a website up focused on her writing. I hope it's still possible to access her FK fanfiction somewhere. Please take care of yourselves and cherish one another, all you old and new FK fans whose names I only know from this amazing list and fandom. I won't profess to say I knew Susan well. I'm pleased she spent some of her time with us, enriching our fandom and raising the bar for many of us who took up the craft of writing. My fondest memory was the one time I met her, she as a guest of Dragon*Con (for that proper official novel we all know), and me as just the regular fan that I am. It's always warmed my heart that she dedicated the book to the lists and that she greeted me so enthusiastically when we met, as if I'd done something special to help her along her way. I will never forget her vast contribution to our fandom, our FK family, and I too shall miss her dearly. Whoever is in touch with her family, please forward my condolences on their loss, and my offer of support, should they need it. Having been involved in some capacity in the fandom/list since the tail end of the show, I was shocked to see this today. Susan had such an enthusiasm for the fandom and its characters, as well as the other fans who supported it. Her contributions to said fandom, including her fan fiction, her tireless work with the Wiki page, and her having published "Intimations of Mortality", which I am still proud to own, were remarkable. It is my hope she has now met up with some of our other dearly departed fans, and she is at peace. Susan and her contributions will be greatly missed by one and all. I had no idea that Susan had been ill and am incredibly saddened to hear of her passing. I actually had the privilege of meeting her once when she was doing a book tour for "Intimations of Immortality." I recall her being very gracious, articulate and a genuinely warm person to be around. A group of FK fans in the DC area took her out to lunch the day after the book signing and had a wonderful time. Her contribution to FK was, and is, immeasurable. She will be missed. :) Boomer Subject: Re: FORKNI-L Digest - 13 Aug 2010 to 15 Aug 2010 (#2010-149) Date: Sunday, August 15, 2010, 5:26 PM Susan was an amazingly talented writer and seemed to me to be an all-round gracious person. I don't go back far enough to remember when she was really active in the fandom. I first knew her as the author of _Intimations of Mortality_. Then, when I started browsing around for fan fiction, I quickly realized that *any* story by "Susan Garrett" was going to be a good read. A lot of people have personal memories to cherish. Lucky you. I would specifically look on the annoucement/information tables for order forms for new zines, and thereby have several in hard-copy. Her /Daydreams and Knightmares/ comes to memory without any effort. I learned the hard way not to take Susan's books to read in public, because she knew how to put so much emotion into the characters I couldn't help but to overtly react to it. The muggles think that's weird. I first met her when she was travelling with the actors from SAJV, and she signed my copy of the zine that was the draft for her novel. IIRC, I saw her year before last at MediaWest. I remember, like so many of us, when she joined FK fandom, she did so semi-reluctantly: "The last thing I need is another fandom!" was how she described it, but FK wouldn't get out of her head, and the rest is history. Oh, and I too remember the sock drive! We will all miss her. Celebrate her life and the memories she left for us. Most people have minds like concrete: mixed up or permanently set. ________________________________ From: Ramona Jackson <lexyladyjax@g.......> To: FORKNI-L@l.......
