Hi Y'all!

It's been ages since I've watched any eps, especially 3rd season, but I'm
wondering about Serena (?) with regards to giving permission? I seem to
recall that she was expecting something else from Nick and was quite
disappointed/angry when she awoke as a vampire. And what about Nat's
brother...he was unconcious when Nick made him and couldn't give
permission. What about Alexandra? I don't recall her giving permission
either. There are examples in the show of people giving "consent freely"
but according to the show it wasn't absolutely necessary to become a
vampire.

assumption that a person has to give their permission to become a
vampire (consent freely given, I think the phrase is). Is there anything
in the show to back this up, or is it strictly speculation?

There's also Urs, of course. She wanted Vachon to kill her, but he
brought her across anyway. This would seem to belie the notion of a
choice, even one on the brink of death as we're shown Nick having.
(Wouldn't Urs have just chosen to die, since that was what she
wanted?)

I think the "consent freely given" is, to borrow from Pirates of the
Carribean, more a guideline than an actual rule. It's probably
considered best to have the consent of the one to be turned by most
civilized vampires, but in no way is it required.

I think the only "choice" is dying and moving on to whatever awaits on the
"other side", or coming back to this life as a vampire. Some "choice"! As
to giving "permission", I would think that that is synonymous to making a
choice.

And, as to choice. This is ambigous as well. Presumably, Akexandra would
have made her choice when she was with the "guardian" (or whoever that
character was). Likewise, Serena would certainly know from that point on
that she and Nick had been talking about different things.

There's also a question of what happens to your soul (assuming we have
them): if you decide to go through the door, then off goes your souldto
whatever. But, if you decide to come back and be a vampire, do you even
have a soul? And if not, what happened to it?

Also, there a number of ambiguities as to just how someone becomes a vampire
in the first place. Maybe not everyone goes to that baren plain where a
choice has to be made.

Just a few thoughts.
