It began a little before "Ashes to Ashes", and I thought "What are they doing? Killing everyone off?" And, sure enough, it looks like that's just what they were doing. Ah, this is the problem with commercial television: it caters to the whim of ratings, funding, but not fans. Anyway, I have the DVDs but I refuse to watch LK. Who needs the grief. In *my* universe, Nick and Nat are carrying on trying to find a cure (or at least come to terms with it) and trying to find love. :-) I prefer to think that LK ever happened. One thing I do find interesting about LK is that -- to my mind, at least -- it's a perfect set up for a seasonal cliff-hanger. That is, next Fall, when the show returns, we find out that Nat isn't dead, LC didn't stake Nick, or Nick survived the staking, and we all get back on track. Why, I'll bet Tracy even survived, "the reports of her death were greatly exaggerated". Maybe they might even go the route of "Dallas" and it was all a sick dream (of a guilt ridden Nick, of course). Alas, the next Fall never arrived. :-( But on the other hand, it left things open enough for a *lot* of fan fiction (in fact, stories about how they got around LK have made a whole sub-genre of FK stories), and there has been some amazing, creative, wonderful, strange, and interesting stories written, but within the canon and extending it. I for one don't. Nick is a tragic hero, his striving for his goal (humanity, forgiveness) always failing, even though his attempts are noble and admirable. It would have been a copout to me if he and Nat lived happily ever after. That said, this one episode produced some of the best fanfic we had in the fandom, both on the side of life and on the side of death. If he had picked her up, put her on the sofa, and then the ending scene with LaCroix, perhaps staking Nick, then I could have accepted that. The Nick we saw for three years, had a heart, and in his own way loved Nat, and would have never left her on that damn floor!!! THAT IS THE ONE THING that's always pissed me off with "Last Knight". Nick wanted Lacroix to stake him so that he could join her, both in the afterlife and on that particular bit of floor. How much more romantic to find the two corpses entwined than finding one on a sofa and the other over there by the fireplace! I see it ending different. The final scene could have been filmed with Nat on sofa after Nick picked her up when he thought she was dead, and carry her there. LaCroix could have staked him while Nick was kneeling over Nat on the sofa. I can see LaCroix pulling the stake back, but Nick has put Nat on the sofa, and is kneeling beside her! For me, that would have been a more emotional ending--not the damn floor--that was SOOOOO cold! That final scene, NOT the ending (even though I didn't like LK), is what has always disturbed and pissed me off--the floor was so cold. IMO, Nick would have picked her up, placed her on the sofa, and then went into his 'dialogue' ending speech to LaCroix; LaCroix then pulling back the stack--same ending, but one more step into the ending--Nick carrying Nat to sofa, and then it picks up where we saw it end in LK, with Nick kneeling beside her. My scene is still romantic, but softer (for lack of another word) than the harsh/cold LK ending.
