Agreed, and it's honestly one of the things I liked best about the show, as
corny and overdone as it often was. Impossible hope in the face of everything
that could (and often did) go wrong, was possibly the strongest continual theme
in the show. I don't think the more depressing ending would have gone over
nearly as well. I certainly wouldn't ever be able to watch that episode again!

As I've mentioned before, I ended up starting FK in the middle of the third
season. It was on re-runs on SciFi at the time, so I knew nothing about
the drama that had surrounded it. I remember quite acutely staring at the
screen for some minutes after I'd turned it off, trying very hard not to
blubber....

It deletes all your files, telling you you don't need such mortal rubbish,
and then makes snarky monologues at you from behind your darkened screen?

I was a huge Dark Shadows fan and watched it one summer morning early
FK came on before and I started to watch what was eft when I woke each
moring. Well I got hooked and started watching it all, then Last Night
came and I stared at the screen with my mouth open, that led me to the
internet and to fan fic trying to find out if that really was the
end.... thank God for fan fic.

Yes, it's in the script.

Something that came from a staffer but which I & those who'd heard weren't able
to mention until some time later: That's exactly why Parriott tried to write an
ending that left all the vampires, Nat and Tracy dead. Sony didn't pull the
plug for ratings. They had been all set to punch it hard at the next trade show
for programmers that summer. WHat happened was that the production company which
produced Highlander was worried about the fact that FK was cutting into their
ratings in markets where the shows competed. They made USA's withdrawing from FK
a condition of their being sold the rerun rights to Highlander. USA caved. They
were unpleasantly surprised by the uproar as a result.

Personally I hated Last Knight as written, because I wanted to see an
ending that left what really happened to the viewer's interpretation. I'm glad
we got it.

I always thought that Last Knight was an act of petulant childishness on
JP's part. Sort of like the disgruntled ex-husband who kills his ex-wife
because "if I can't have her, NOONE can!"
But I did like that they left a bit of ambiguity there. It has been years
since I saw the episode but I remember thinking at the time that there were a
lot parallels between Last Knight and Curiouser and Curiouser. I think if the
series had somehow managed to come back it would have been interesting if
everything after Tracy's death in Last Knight had been another of Nick's guilt
dream sequences. I also had this off the wall (and admittedly cheesy) idea that
really old and powerful vampires like LaCroix and Divia could take over another
compatible body if their original body became too badly damaged to regenerate.
That would have explained how LaCroix came back after being "dead" and why he
was no longer platinum blonde. It would also have allowed Divia to come
back even as the actress that played her continued to grow up in real life.

Last Knight came at a very dark time in my life. I was extremely sick at
the time and was at risk of losing my job. Then my dad died and we discovered
that he had concealed a huge amount of debt from my mom. We thought we were
going to lose the family home. Forever Knight was my one escape from the
chaos around me. So when Last Knight aired it felt like a huge betrayal. It
was like JP was saying FU to everybody who had ever been fans of the show.

My love of FK started when I saw the Rick Springfield version and thought to
myself, "hmm, cool concept, it would make a good series." Flash forward a
few years and by accident I caught the episode "False Witness". Our CBS
affiliate only showed FK if the Baseball, Basketball or Football game they
were airing didn't go overtime, which it usually did. When it moved to USA,
I thought, finally I can watch it regularly - heh. All this time I had been
telling my mother about this great show that I liked and I finally convinced
her to sit down and watch an episode with me. As it turns out was Last
Knight. I had to admit I was pretty shell shocked at the time by the entire
episode. My mother says to me, "Seems like a really good show. Too bad
everyone died.
