There are many times this episode of this series is referred to in conversations and online as the worst ending ever, in terms of being horrific to the characters, as well as being memorable in terms of not being 'happily ever after.' (That sentence got away from me a bit.) In spite of having no closure and having that dreadful ending, I'm a bit proud of FK for that. Thank Ger for that. The original script actually showed the staking. The way Ger chose to shoot it let the fans take from it what they wanted. Those who wanted to could believe that LC didn't actually stake Nick (and some fic has done great work following that line) and then those who believe that LC did kill Nick can believe that as well. It works both ways. -Amanda "This dark gift brings enlightened sight, as if the sun's bright rays illuminate sweet mortal forms to take my breath away." http://www.darksideoftheglass.com http://lestat.darksideoftheglass.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 May 2010 21:45:43 -0500 From: Margie Hammet <treeleaf@i.......> Subject: Re: Episode Discussion: Last Knight > Date: Tue, 4 May 2010 10:06:25 -0400 > From: "Phillips, Tim" <Tim.Phillips@s.......> > > 5) how ever much this episode is a heart-wrencher, I do credit the creative staff with not flinching when crafting the ending. Forever Knight without Last Knight would not be the same. It would be like watching The Professional and having Leon not get killed by Stansfield at the end. And then of course there are those of us who think Last Knight was completely the wrong ending. I don't think it was the creative staff; I think it was just James Parriott. I think it was his protest against what the powers at USA network had done to his creation. Also, I have a copy of the script. James Parriott wrote the ending with Nick and Nat unambiguously dead. The last thing we would have seen was the stake descending. Ger, who was directing, took the last shot out of the script. Parriott put in back end. This may have happened more than once. Finally Parriott flew to Toronto to be at the final shoot and make sure his ending was filmed. Someone called Sony at that point. We never knew who. Sony called the set just before the final scene was shot and insisted on the ambiguous ending. Catherine Disher had done a little movement at the end of Nick's drinking from her, hoping to indicate that Nat wasn't dead. I don't think that made it to the final version, probably on Parriott's order. Personally I hated Last Knight as written, because I wanted to see an ending that left what really happened to the viewer's interpretation. I'm glad we got it. I wonder if the fact that the sun is rising at the end of the episode was a deliberate piece of symbology...or if someone just grabbed one of the sun over Toronoto clips at random. Symbolically, the sunrise would mean the literal end of Nick's forever night....or it could in fact symbolize the end of the Forever Knight television show itself. > Sony called the set just before the final scene was shot and insisted > on the ambiguous ending. The ambiguous ending makes sense for Sony to want. With an ambiguous ending, they could more easily restart the series if the weird winds of network broadcast meant there was a request for it the following season. Not terribly likely...but FK had clawed up out of the grave before. > Personally I hated Last Knight as written, because I wanted to see an > ending that left what really happened to the viewer's interpretation. I'm glad we got it. Yes, this ending works better. I personally think LaCroix staked Nick...but what happened then??? A Very Happy Halloween was my answer. Others have provided their alternatives. The written ending would have been more stark...but I do not think it would have worked as well. There was always an element of hope winning out I the end as a undercurrent in FK.
