It possible no one told the writer that they weren't coming back.
On the other hand, why a new character when they haven't made
much use of Vachon. He's only in 10 or 11 episodes although
        credited for all of them.

Nick, he often used a variation on "Knight" as a
surname, so it isn't outside the ballpark to figure
out that he used "Chevaliar" at one time or another.

I recall hearing that Francesca was supposed to be the pentultimate episode, but
the writer (I think Gillian Horvath wrote this ep) wasn't told that Vachon's
character would be killed off in the following episode - Ashes to Ashes. Rather
than rewrite the ep, the episodes were distributed with a notice that Francesca
had to be aired before Ashes to Ashes. Based on that, it's entirely possible
that the writer did not know the series had been cancelled. In any event, I'm
glad they didn't redo or scrap the episode completely as it has always been one
of my favorites.

Ah, but Vachon doesn't need to know Nick's whole life story. He just needs
to know a little French. "Chevalier" means "knight". At that point the
cheese is on Nick--who has used a lot of different aliases, but keeps coming
back to this one over and over.

No, but every time I see the actor in re-runs of episodes of "Blue Murder"
or "ReGenesis", I flash on him in drag. Does that count?

Crud.
I knew that Chevaliar sounded familiar but couldn't place it beyond a name I'd
heard before.
Thanks for reforming the memory.

One of my favorites. :)
There is this wonderful scene in which Nick explains the meaning of blood to
Nat.

From Tim Phillips:

that Nick was Nicholas Chevaliar in the 18th century? <

It doesn't strike me as odd. I assume that Vachon is fluent in French, so all he
needed to do was translate "chevalier" in order to make the connection. In this
context, it always strikes me as odd that none of the other characters -
especially Tracy - made the connection or at least - in Reese's case - made a
funny remark.
