This past week we learned my mother needs to have heart valve
replacement surgery. She has been very nervous about this, as her
mother had unseen complications during bypass surgery eighteen years ago.

We're also unsure how much of the surgery and peripheral care (tests,
hospital care, recovery/rehab, etc.) will be covered by insurance
(Medicaid/Medicare and supplemental) -- and what will happen with the
uncovered expenses (as it is, Mom is having trouble maintaining
financial independence, and neither my sister nor I are in any
position to help out).

Prayers and good wishes for this all to sort out (Mom to recover
easily, expenses to be covered, etc.) would be greatly appreciated.

My best wishes to you mom and her speedy recovery. Please remember that cardiac
surgery is much advanced from 18 years ago, and that valve replacement is a
common procedure.

Both my Mom and my aunt use Medicare plus private insurance, and their hospital
visits have been almost entirely covered--Aunt Nellie's broken hip, and a few
trips to the ER for my Mom when she suffered atrial fibrillation despite her
pacemaker. If you have concerns, talk to the hospital's billing office. They
should have someone who can give you a good idea of what expenses, if any,
you'll be facing. My 94-year-old aunt is in a nursing home, and when she went
back there after her hospital stay, Medicare payed for the PT she needed to
enable her to be able to sit in her chair and to walk a little bit. We were very
grateful for the assistance she received to recover as much as possible.

Good luck,
Nancy Kaminski
