Urs: This name is for me an enigma. Urs is a German variant for Latin name

Ursula means She-Bear, does it not? Nicknames were not unknown on Forever
Knight: Schank for Schanke, Nick for Nicholas, Nat for Natalie...what do the
rest of y'all think? I've always thought of her as a little blond she-bear,
but that's just me.

Yes, I've considered it a nickname for Ursula or possible Ursule if her human
life was truly from French New Orleans. (And wouldn't that just tie in with the
French theme? :)

Ursula in English is a valid feminine name.

In Latin, the root for "bear" is URS, thus

ursus - bear in general, male bear in particular
ursa - female bear

cf. Ursa Major, the Big Bear constellation.

There is also Ersa, the Greek goddess of "dew". (Wikipedia)

And there is always the possibility that the name is related to
Erda, Wagner's Earth goddess in his Ring Cycle.

There are also several Scandinavian variants, ers, erse, ors, etc.
which relate to earth, plowing, and harvest. (OED)

I've always assumed that Urs was short for Ursa (or possibly Ursula)

But a phonetic derivation such as Earth > Urth > Urs relating
to "Earth Mother" might be valid. She is an earth-mother type.
Doesn't LaCroix describe her as an earth goddess?

I've also always been struck by how much she looks like Marilyn Monroe.

Careful calling LC unattractive-- he has fangirls who will pounce you for
that kind of thing! ^^;;; I'm pretty sure the reason is just that he's so
much older and more powerful than the others who tried. If sex appeal were
the main deciding factor, I think that would make women more likely to
listen to the good-looking vampires rather than less!

Nick always seems to be harsh on Vachon, for some reason. I'm not sure why,
since Vachon seems to have his heart in the right place most of the time,
and isn't nearly as irresponsible as his reputation claims. Then again,
maybe he needs someone riding his back to behave in a reasonably good and
responsible way? Now I'm imagining the Inca pulling Mich aside and saying,
"Look, man, after I'm gone, I want you to keep on his back, all right?
'Cause if you don't he'll never do anything but lie around and play that
stupid guitar!"

Urs is probably short for Ursula, which is a feminine name that means
"little bear". But since that's never stated in any official source, it's
just what we're left to suppose. I do think it would be an interesting
contradiction for someone like her, who oozes feminine sex appeal, to have a
masculine name, though.

I think Nick is hard on Vachon because Vachon is so comfortable in his own skin.
Nick always seems to have a problem with vampires who are just happy/content
being who or what they are. I think this is one of the underlying issues he
has with Screed as well. The fact that Screed is carouche, just makes a good
excuse to look down on him.

Must be the "I'm too old and powerful"-thing that enables him to hypnotize
resistors, because Lacroix definitely IS attractive!

Actually Ursula is a female name that is quite popular in Germany. I happen to
know at least 4 people who go by this name.

Petra.
