My neighbor was on the Andrea Doria, but a lot of people survived that ship
sinking. It took place about 51 years ago.

Of course the Hindenburg blew up in the middle of the day. There are
those spectacular pics. Titanic was at night -- the Lusitania? When
was that? The San Fran earthquake was early morning. I am trying to
think of amazing disasters that our vamps could have benefitted from.
Chicago fire. The bombing of London in WWII. Firebombing would have
been too dangerous.

According to greatships.net, the fate of the Lusitania:

<<At sea when World War I broke out, Lusitania arrived home safely, and
unlike Mauretania was kept in her regular service during the war, making
monthly sailings between Liverpool and New York. However, on 7 May 1915,
while heading east off the Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland (see the card,
below), Lusitania was torpedoed without warning by U-20 and sank within 18
minutes. (Two explosions rocked the ship. The first was clearly caused by a
torpedo from U-20. The cause of the second explosion has never been
definitively determined and remains the source of much controversy.)>>

The websites don't say what time of day it was sunk, but if the vamps headed
down to deep sea levels or the ocean floor, they wouldn't have to worry
about the sun. As an aside, the original owners of my paternal
grandfather's house crossed the Atlantic on the Lusitania before it went
down and gave him an ashtray from the fated ship. It is still in my
family's possession.

It's been a very long time since I read a memoire that included being on the
Lusitania when it was torpedoed. I seem to recall that it was during the day.
I know that the lifts were in use and that the people who were caught in them
were described as having been drowned like rats in a trap. It's unlikely that
the lifts would have been used in evacuating the ships, for the same reason
they aren't used in modern building fires. So that reinforces the impression
that the ship was sunk during the day. LC could of course, as pointed out
elsewhere, have simply sunk with the ship, then emerged from the sea after
darkness fell.

BTW, we know from Father Figure that LC, Nick and Janette were in London during
the bliz. That's definitely a WWII hairdo on Janette. Of course not all the
bombs were incendiaries. At least half were simply high explosives. Part of
the reason there were fires during the raids was that there were a number of
flammable substances stored or used in manufacturing in areas which were
heavily targetted.
