Good grief, I think I'm turning into a FOD! The more I watch the series now,
the more I'm enjoying Schanke's character. In this episode, he's stopped
smoking for the last 2 weeks; we see (just for an instant, in Stonetree's
office) that he has taken to chewing toothpicks instead.

Flashback scene: Janette, LC & Nick are being pursued on horseback in broad
daylight, and trailing smoke. Suddenly, Janette stops her horse and exclaims
"Nicholas, I can't go on!" For the life of me, I can't see what the problem
was. It's not like she turned her ankle, and obviously the horse was okay
too, since Nick led her away still mounted on her horse.

This is also the episode where we discover that Schanke really does like
opera; first, in the motel, he wants to watch a TV special on Puccini;
later, near the end of the episode, he's listening to the opera quiz on the
radio and giving the right answers.

In this episode, we also start to see that Janette is something of a
protector to the vulnerable. Nick's appeal to her in order to get her to
shelter Schanke is (in hindsight) clearly aimed at this aspect of her
character. "He needs your help; we both do."

I love Janette's response to Schanke's question about the coffin in the
Raven's basement: "We cater to the occasional fetishist." The straight-up
way she says this makes It really sound like sleeping in a coffin is some
sort of a (vamp?) fetish.

When the perp phones in to the Police Special to check on the status of his
personal ad, the name he uses is "Alan Smithee". At the time this episode
was filmed, the use of the Alan Smithee pseudonym by dissatisfied directors
was not widely known. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Smithee

This is also the episode where the computerisation of the police database
forces Nick to go to Larry Merlin for help with setting up his back history
in computer databases across North America.

And we hear Lori Yates sing "Touch the Night" for the first time too J

My husband really didn't like the character of Alice, the newspaper vendor.
He thought she was totally miscast, while I thought she was just right. He
also pointed out that Alice and Schanke were obviously familiar with each
other, since they called each other by name. I guess Schanke stopped
regularly at her newsstand on his way in & out of the Raven?

Does Toronto even have newsstands like that? I don't recall seeing any.

The weekly police paper that Schanke is hooked on reminds me of Montreal's
very popular French-language weekly tabloid, Allo Police I never read it (it
isn't published anymore), but it was supposed to be pretty sensational.
Perhaps the Americans on the list know of something similar in the States,
as I really can't believe Allo Police was the inspiration here.

Schanke (on being caught listening to the opera quiz): "The world of music
has as many facets as the gem of life, each beautiful in its own way." This
line had my husband commenting that it sounded a lot like Lacroix. Now
*that's* an interesting idea-Schanke as Lacroix's character foil! They both
wax poetic upon occasion, both are pragmatists... I'll have to keep my eye
on this.

Your humble & obedient servant,

Angela Gottfred
