They are in most respects very much alike.
The original film is well worth seeing.
Much of the dialog is identical. I think
most of hte changes were improvements:

in the original film Janette did seem
rather out of it or not quite there.

The flashbacks in the series are sometimes
better than the stories -- my understanding is
that they were originally considered as filler
to be edited from the longer Cnandian
version for the American showings, but they
             became increasingly popular.

The original coroner was male. Natalie was
             a very nice improvement. ;-)

It would be interesting to get John Kapelos's views on the two
different versions since he was one of the few who worked on the
film and then the series as well.

Was there any other actor that was brought across from the movie version?

We asked John at Bridging the Night, and he said it was like
attending high school all over again....

	Yes.
I agree that Alyce from the original movie was more intriguing.
But, I also think that the character of Jerry - the forensic
specialist in the movie - wasn't a strong as Natalie.
I believe that when they went to do the series, they decided
that they wanted a female for the coronor's office, to provide a better
male/female balance and to offer a another constant female lead for Nick
to play against.
They gave Natalie funny quirks like Alyce (different quirks, but
still things that gave the character depth) and the Alyce of the series
opening become much more a "neck o' the week".

	No. Not that I've noticed.
Maybe someone operating at the level of an extra...but no
character that has a name or is really there for more than a few
seconds.
I had a pretty good obsession going with the original film for a
while, so I don't think I'm wrong.....

Very true. I also heard, unofficially but while the series was still
on the air, that originally Alyce in the series was to be in three or
four episodes. The complete lack of chemistry between the actress in
the tv version and Ger made the producers decide not to do this. I
suspect the dfinite chemistry between Ger and CD as Natalie
contributed to the change.

No doubt the change in plans is why we have that shot of Alyce as a
vampire looking in that window or skylight at the end of Dark Knight.
