I was able to see it online at lunch time the Tuesday after it aired but by the
evening I was getting the exact same message everyone is reporting. I still am
today.
One of the initial concerns I had was that the CBC might "lock" their streaming
content for only Canadian audiences. For a while there it looked like that
wouldn't be the case because I and other fans were able to see it. I'm in Texas. I
guess we'll see on Tuesday after the second episode airs how they play it.
Perhaps it was supposed to be "locked" the whole time but no on caught it until
later in the evening.
I feel bad that there were many fans out there who were curious about watching
the episode but were unable to. It was a very slick production with some great
production value. The Toronto landscape was such a memorable part of Forever
Knight and The Border does a nice job showcasing the city. They had a lovely
sunset shot which tugs at the ol' heart strings.
Nigel and Catherine were a joy to watch and it's great to see them work on
productions that are getting significant media attention. They've both paid their
dues as actors and it's nice to see their time in the Canadian industry work out
for them.
Since I kinda started the whole "Hey it's online now!" thing but the window of
its availability was rather small here's a run down of the Nigel and Catherine
scenes for those interested:
ICS (Immigration and Customs) are called to Pierson (airport) to pick up a
suspected terrorist agent. Most of the ICS agents arrive together but somehow
Maggie (Catherine Disher's character) is exiting with the suspect and all the other
plane's passengers. From surveillance it looks like he's strapped with scanner
proof explosives and they start re-routing some of the plane's passengers.
Maggie and the suspect approach the escalators together and in a really
adorable move she swings her bag over her shoulder and "accidentally" hits him. She
starts fussing about how sorry she is and that it was a long flight and "her feet
are like watermelons". He completely ignores her and walks off and she calls
off to him sort of self-deprecating "No? Alright well off you go!"
The suspect realizes he's been identified and steals the firearm off a rookie
member of the squad. Every one pulls their guns including Maggie. Eventually the
situation is resolved and in comes Nigel Bennett's character Mannering who is
a top CSIS (Canadian spy agency) agent to "take it from here". He wants the
suspect. A Schanke-like ICS agent comments to Maggie about wondering what rock he
crawled out of.
Maggie talks to a Canadian Muslim man who was observed talking to the
terrorist. He says he's not involved and was visibly shocked when told that the man he
was talking to was responsible for blowing up a Canadian embassy. Maggie tells
him if he's innocent he's got nothing to worry about. She decides to detain him
while she checks out his story.
Mannering and Kessler (the head of ICS) start trying to claim jurisdiction on
the terror suspect. Mannering gets him. He then sees Maggie talking to the
Canadian Muslim man. The man says he's a high school teacher and Maggie agrees that
so far he checks out. At that moment the terror suspect starts shouting things
in Arabic to the high school teacher. A CSIS agent translates it to "Call your
lawyer." Mannering is very interested at this information. Now Mannering wants
him too and he gets him. Mannering smiles smugly and Maggie glares at him.
At headquarters Maggie peddles chocolate brownies and tells the kids they need
to fatten up. Kessler calls Mannering a man with no conscience.
At a meeting with all the agents Kessler divvies up tasks. He and Maggie will
talk to the school teacher's family. She deadpans that they'll be "so glad" to
see them.
The following day Maggie and Kessler show up to interview the family. It was
very Mulder/Scully ala The X-Files, with the trench coats, the gloomy weather,
and umbrellas. Kessler laments about his 19 year old daughter now being able to
legally get drunk and her new smoking habit. He says that has to stop. Maggie's
response. "Oh yeah? Good luck with that." They interview the wife and she is
understandably not very happy with them.
The ICS computer tech head has managed to tap into the CSIS mainframe where
they've uploaded the contents of the school teacher's computer they confiscated.
There's nothing in there remotely interesting to the government and the tech
head finds the files boring. Maggie does give some nice reaction shots to his
complaining. Very "Natalie, this stuff tastes awful do I have to drink it?" "Yes
Nick you do." All this is short-lived before they get their access blocked. Agent
Mannering is responsible ascertains Kessler.
Kessler and Mannering meet in a very nicely shot scene in downtown (?) Toronto.
Kessler maintains that there is no real evidence to hold the school teacher.
He was merely at the wrong place at the wrong time. Mannering says "Worst case:
One little fish gets caught in the shark cage. What are we to do? Open the door
and let the sharks swim free?" The school teacher's wife is suing and Kessler
says he's not covering for Mannering. He did that once and he didn't like it.
Mannering has spoken with their mutual boss and ICS is being relieved of all
responsibilities. Mannering wants them to wrap everything up and let CSIS run it
now.
Kessler has some agents pick up a man who had previously been falsely
imprisoned by the government for over a year for alleged terrorist links. He was
exonerated of all charges but the incident is still fresh in the public's mind.
Someone on the list has already mentioned that he is the same actor who played the
Inca in Black Buddha. Kessler wants a media circus and he gets one. Reporters
swarm ICS headquarters. Kessler tells them that CSIS is now running things.
Agent Mannering drives up and Kessler directs the reporters to him but he
simply walks past them and into ICS headquarters. Maggie lets Kessler know that
Mannering is in his office and he is "pissed". Mannering accuses Kessler of
deliberately humiliating his own government i.e. CSIS. It's two schools of thought
going head to head. He tells Kessler if he keeps it up it's war between them.
Maggie is amused at all this. "We have lift off" she snarks as Mannering storms
passed her.
Eventually the Foreign Affairs Minister intervenes and they release of the
school teacher from the prison camp he'd been sent to is being negotiated.

I could watch a bit when it was first put up. Now I get the same
message that it isn't available regardless which browser I use
(Safari, Camino). So I suspect too that CBC is simply blocking
foreign IPs (streaming is expensive).
IT#s good to see NB and Catherine Disher in one project again.
Especially CD, since the things she does now rarely come across to us
in Europe.
