The idea that they _had_ minds is of course debatable, or maybe they were simply out of them. :) > > mclisa Considering all the uncertainties that happen in getting a TV show on the air in the first place, it's a wonder that any get on at all, let alone any with any sort of intelligence and merit. USA Network was/is in the position of being in business to make money and their "suggestions" were an attempt to guarantee this. Most TV series are in the unfortunate position of having to listen to network executives and/or bean counters who have no knowledge of what the series is or why people like it; i.e., the golden rule: he who has the gold, makes the rules. Heaven forefend that these network types listen to the people who actually know what they are doing (the actors, the production staff, etc.) and the fans who watch the thing. It can get pretty depressing, but there are a few lights: Forever Knight was on three years - a lot longer than some series. And, even at its worst, it was pretty good and never really quite "dumb". But, in all honesty, to consider Deborah DuChene not sexy enough? Hey, she could get a gay man's blood going! I'd love to hear them. Lisa asked if I'm on too much pain medication and said she'd let me explain. I've told this before, but I know we have some new blood *snigger* and some of the "vintage" fans love the story, I'm told. I didn't watch FK until the third season, although I definitely knew about it as fellow members of the Little Rock Science Fiction Society talked about it. Right before third season started, I was in my second serious car wreck in 18 months (I want to stress - NOT my fault) which seriously injured my back and neck (again). Since I'd done well on valium 18 months before, I was immediately put on it again. Fast forward a few days when the sci fi club meets at my house. A couple asks if we can please watch FK as it was the third season premiere and there were going to be changes they were curious to see. Being a vampire fan, I didn't object. I liked what I saw, though I didn't understand why the "already fans" missed Schanke. So, the next Saturday I turned on the show again. Unknown to anyone at the time, the valium wasn't processing through me - it was building up. I was on a major high and no one had figured that out yet. When Screed first came into the picture, I thought he was about the coolest thing I'd EVER seen on television, in movies, in real life... The guy ate RATS, how much cooler can you get than that??? <wRPg> I even called (or had my ex call, I don't remember) the couple who'd introduced myself to the show to find out if they had any of Screed's earlier episodes taped. I was very disappointed to find out he was a new character. A bit later, my ex and I were at an Oklahoma sci fi convention where I met some FORKNI-L folks (who later supplied me with seasons 1-2), got to see Schanke for the first time in an episode in the video room, and found out PN Elrod was a fan who was writing a book with Nigel Bennett. She handed me a flyer for Bridging the Knight. There was no question, I was going... ...Especially when I found out they were auctioning "The Ratsie Wot Kilt Screed." I'd LOVED "Fever," never mind they'd killed Screed. I still rate that as one of my favorite television episodes. To tell you how badly I wanted that chewed on white laboratory dummy rat, frugal me even took out a small credit union loan to make sure I could get it. I remember Natsuko picking up the rat (still in the police evidence bag) and screaming and screaming and screaming while I started bidding and bidding and bidding. I'm told that the higher the bid went, the more "don't you miss with this little Southern Ratpacker" my voice got and the fewer people were bidding against me. I won it, along with an autographed copy of Greg "Screed" Kramer's first novel later in the auction. The bidding on a saber supposedly used by Screed went too high, but the winner let me hold it - I'm glad as a few years ago it ended up on eBay when I was broke and after asking me to identify it, some fellow FKers, remembering how badly I'd wanted it, gifted it to me!!!!!! *HAPPY RATSIE DANCE!* Anyway, because of ODing on Valium, I discovered Screed, Greg Kramer, his novel "Pursemonger of Fugu," met him, have done a couple of "Gregerings" so other fans could meet him, and all that sorta thingee. (Believe me, I was hardly normal before that....) As for Greg, the first thing I remember him saying to me: "You're Libby and you write comic books? COOL!" Then he ran through the theater's bar swinging the Ratsie by the tail saying, "Look! This is the rat wot killed me off Forever Knight!" (Between that and Nigel Bennett swinging the rat by the tail at a convention, I'm surprised the rat has survived!) --Longwinded Libs - blame McLisa Lisa McDavid <mclisa@m.......> wrote: Libs, are you by any chance back on too much pain medication? :) I'll let you explain to the list why I might think so in connection with Screed. <snip>McLisa, beginning to think of fanfic challenges (explain Screed in an off the shoulder gown) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2007 19:27:21 -0400 From: Emily Lacey <laceyem@h.......> Subject: Re: Knight's Hearts Sequel? FK I liked from the very beginning (even if I didn't become a fan until later) but I'm really struggling to keep up an interest in M. I find it boring actually - just your run-of-the-mill detective story but with a bit of fangs added. It urned out that these flashbacks became an integral, and quite popular, part of the show. They were used to punctuate whatever was happening to Nick in the present. Without them, the show would have been pretty much "a run-of-the-mill detective story" with fangs. (specifically, compare "Nick Knight" with "Dark Night" if you can.) The flashbacks may not have made the show, but they certainly helped and influenced it. Poor Mick, he only has 60 years to falsh back in.
