Lisa is comparing Nick's Toronto loft to Superman's arctic retreat, and thereby comparing lonely vampire hero Nick to lonely alien hero Superman, though of course she cannot know the breadth of applicability in her parallel. < That's a fascinating observation. I never made the connection since I never watched Superman in English and didn't know that his arctic retreat was called "Fortress of Solitude". So broadly drawn they are painted with a wallroller. 2) Janette's waitress in Nick's dream. OK, I understand the beehive hairdo, but why the extra "wiggle in the walk"??? 3) I like the whole diner scene in the way it was done. It isn't visibly a dream until the blood starts to flow. I like that. I like that Nick's "dream food" is a french-fry. 4) LaCroix as the short-order cook from Hell. 5) I like the structure of the opening...with the viewpoint bouncing between Nick and Rebecca, showing the parallels in their lives. The difficulty awakening to the "real world", the nagging coworker, the "addiction" to drink. It was common in Forever Knight for Nick to see a commonality with the guest character, here it is more deliberately shown and it works well. 6) "Thank you, Santa....but what I really wanted was ice-skates." Funny line by Rebecca about the guy she finds in her bed. 7) Nick's "invisible man" getup is interesting. If all that will burn is exposed skin, I'm surprised he doesn't simply get a set of fullbody leathers, a helmet with a tinted visor and a Harley Davidson. So long as he doesn't lift the visor...he'd be set. Of course, in other episodes we've seen that vampires "steam/smoke" through their clothing in sunlight....the show's bible always was kinda flexible and not allowed to limit a scene that someone wanted to show. I do like the scene where Nick picks Schanke up at the station. It is played well for comic effect. "nice outfit, don't you think you're overreacting a bit to this whole ozone thing?" "Not really." 8) when Rebecca arrives at the stadium and is being dressed down by her manager, he says she smells like a distillery and she breaths on him. Anyone else think that was supposed to look like Janette's "hiss" when she is vamped out??? 9) "John, Paul, George and Schanke". I'm not sure...but I think that Schanke as a member of the Beatles is - along with caterwauling cockroaches - one of the signs of the Apocolypse. 10) "I'm the outsider looking in" music video sequence with Nick and Rebecca. Another deliberate paralleling of the two characters that really works. 11) "Actually I was with the Grateful Dead." - Nick on being at Woodstock. 12) Nick and LaCroix as rock'n'rollers. Nice little scene. Looks very theatrical in that all they had was black velvet curtains and a lighted dressing table for a set. Would have been more amusing if Rick Springfield had continued in the Nick Knight role...especially when Nick gets on-stage and bombs out. 13) point of annoyance. Every police drama I've ever seen, the detectives pull down the police-line do-not-cross tape as they dramatically reenter the crime-scene to find the missing clue. Even if they don't have to break the tape to open the door. <Grumble-snarl-snap>. 14) the conversation between Nick and Rebecca in her jailcell is nice. Nick can really sympathize with Rebecca given how she views her situation and how trapped by it she feels. Follow that up with the scene with Nick and LaCroix as his jailer and you've got the parallels between them laid out again. Easy to see why Nick is sympathic toward her. 15) I like the twist ending...but wouldn't a band that worked with Rebecca every night not notice it was Wendy that had walked onto the stage? She was standing right next to at least one guitarist. It would have worked better if she was more distant from the members of her band. A funny little personal note, I know I saw this episode way back when FK was still on SciFi. I actually have a VHS tape copy of it. I then forgot the episode for a period of time and wrote the short story FANG (or We Love The Boys from The Band). Later, I rediscovered the tape and watched it and was amused by the parallels my subconscious memories had made and not made. Probably a good thing I forgot the episode as I won't have written FANG because it wouldn't have felt unique enough to spend the energy on. Anyway, this does stand as one of my very favorite FK episodes. Definitely somewhere in the top 10.
