In retrospect I am surprised that there wasn't a reference to XMEN too.
It seems to me that they could have done some good stuff paralleling
Nick's vampirism to XMEN mutations. .... and weren't the bad guys  who
installed Wolverine's exoskeleton some evil sub-set of the  Canadian
government?
I suppose that they chose the Superman references because more
people would have been familiar with that comic book than  the XMEN in
 the early 1990s.
