This new guy seems less angsty than Nick, but I guess that's to be
expected, since he's so much younger. Maybe being younger will also make
him feel less removed from his humanity, since he hasn't had as much time to
see people he cares about die and society change.
Is the vampire lady he was engaged to before gonna be like the new guy's
LaCroix? Maybe they'll have the same kind of romantic tension going on. . .
only this time it'll be canonical rather than inferred by fans ^_^ .

:) I do agree, though i wasn't excluding legal sites as well! All i know
is itunes(which overseas peeps can't download from without having a US
creditcard.), but i thought there might be other 'legal' sites out there
as well...as i believe some TV stations have their own downloading
sites....gone are the days where ALL downloading is illegal!

That said...:P I'm looking forward to some more FK fiction hitting the
netwaves!

The strong implication is that it was Lacroix -- and Nick believes it
is Lacroix -- but it happened off-screen, so you can certainly create
an interpretation in which Janette is Daniel's maker. However, as
with the Baroness in "If Looks Could Kill," that interpretation runs
up against Nick's need to ask, in "I Will Repay," whether Janette has
ever brought anyone across, and her clearly saying "no," that she is
"too much the glutton" and they have always died before she could
bring anyone across. If Janette had brought across either Daniel or
Sofia, surely Nick would have known that, and not needed later to ask
the question, so if IWR is allowed as written (and it did air well
before the other two), Janette should not be either Daniel or Sofia's maker.

Granted, continuity snafus are FK's stock in trade. One could bend
the interpretation to reconcile it in the opposite direction by
suggesting that Nick had all the evidence necessary to know that it
was Janette each time, but was too dense or too stubborn to accept
it, and Janette lied to him (or humored his delusion) in IWR. I
don't like that interpretation for general purposes, though; unless
it supports a specific story scenario to suppose otherwise, I find it
most consistent to see Nick as more observant than the average fellow
in support of his success as a detective -- it's more sharp
observation and understanding of human nature than it is supernatural powers.

I think he's a brick about a specific range of things, not about
everything. ;-)

Confused, sorry! It is the young actor who played Nick's nephew
Andre in "Fallen Idol" who grew up to play Darth Vader. I went into
that movie as excited about seeing what Fleur's son would look like
at that age as anything Mr. Lucas could share with us after the Jar-Jar fiasco.

I have a fantasy of someone asking him about "Fallen Idol" at some
_Star Wars_ convention someday, but he'll probably have to admit he
just doesn't remember; it was brief and so long ago in his young
life. I understand that that's what the _Blood Ties_ star has said
about her two FK episodes (FIHS and C&C).

Claire Rankin, who played Fleur, is currently on _Stargate: Atlantis_
(as I'm sure everyone knows). An acquaintance of mine uses several
LJ icons of Ms. Rankin as her SGA character, but every time I see
those icons, I see Fleur, and find myself (all irrationally) looking
for points of commonality with Nick in her appearance. Whatever
traits Claire Rankin coincidentally has in common with GWD become
family heritage for the de Brabant line in my imagination. I have a
Fleur-and-Nick-and-Lacroix novella that's been sitting moribund since
'96; those images of Rankin from SGA, of all things, have inspired me
to pull it out again, which amuses me greatly. Fleur as a
psychologist in another galaxy? She'd love that. ;-)

Subject: Re: Episode Discussion: Father Figure

Read below each for my comments. There were so many different things I
wanted to comment on, that I commented after each of the points Tim made, or
at least as many of them as I thought I had an opinion on.

1) is there some back story to why the character of Dell is introduced???
Was John Kapelos simply unavailable at the last moment or did the writer
want to add a little "taste of the real" in that Schanke is doing the
"dad thing" of being at his daughter's dance recital?

Actually it's stated a "school recital," and Del says: "His daughter is
singing." This leads me to believe it's possibly a chorus or other school
function? Perhaps they wanted to give Schanke the image of doing the Dad
thing, missing a call out on a case for his daughter.

2) "In like a sportscar, out like a semi" - got to love how they show
Natalie's easy familiarity with the dead. She rolls the victim over
impersonally so she can see the exit wound and is unphased; Dell at least
winces a little, although he does start the joking around -probably as a
mental defense.

She definitely does seem at ease with the dead, given her occupation and the
fact that Nick is one of the undead, bringing into her life all the
complications a vampire brings to a mortal. She'd have to be familiar with
it, but most certainly not like it. She seems more effected by the death of
her friend Laura (the suicide in Last Knight). It's more personal. I think
she is simply showing her professional side at many of the crime scenes.

3) I like the little motion with her tongue Catherine Disher gives when Nick
goes past her to look in the alley. That and the look on her face. You can
see/understand why she likes being around Nick, he is/his powers as a
vampire are exciting to her.

4) heh, Gary Farmer directed. Cool.

5) anyone have 35H MV6 for a license plate in Canada now?? I know the plate
OA-5599 (the plate from the Dodge Challenger in the movie The Vanishing
Point) is a highly sought after one.

6) it is different that Janette is the one "taking in a stray" with wanting
to help Daniel. Of course, he does compliment her and she does seem to find
him amusing.

But as Lacroix clearly states, Jeanette's motives aren't purely maternal. I
do believe on some level she wants that feeling of family, and a child would
certainly accomplish that for her. However, I think the vampire tends to
take over much of the time. In the second season episode (the name escapes
me at the moment), where the call girls were being attacked. Jeanette
considers bring (?Julie) across. But once she discovers the levels of
deception the girl goes to in trying to take over the business from her
pimp, she opts instead to hand her over to Nick's form of justice, the law.

7) Don Schanke on fatherhood. Say what you want about Donut Don, it is
clear he loves being a dad.

I'll admit I see that more and more as the episodes go on. He loves his
family, and even though Myra tends to unnerve him with things she
does/enjoys, it's all too clear he loves his wife and daughter immensely.

8) "Is this your Fortress of Solitude?" Might be young, but Lisa is
perceptive when she first enters the Loft.

That line seems a little too scripted, but yes, Lisa is perceptive. I think
she could have been written a little bit better in some parts and was fine
in others.

9) What is Schanke's "favorite television program" that he is watching when
Nick calls. The theme song sounds very familiar, but I can't place it.

The show was I Dream Of Jeannie.

10) Ahhh....that is why Janette likes Daniel. Gives her a feeling of
family.

Yes it does, but again as much as she wants her motives to be purely
maternal, they can't be. The vampire takes over too much of the time.

11) Wow...Lacroix is certainly in a mood when Janette gives Daniel his gift.
A little over-the-top for the character. Looks like an angry cat hissing at
a dog it doesn't like.

Seems a little overdone, but then again we've never seen Lacroix around
anyone of the youthful age,, and perhaps he is simply trying to appear
intimidating. Doesn't want Daniel getting too close.

12) "why don't you marry her, she's got it bad for you" - out of the mouths
of babes.

That was cute! Definitely something a kid could come up with.

13) "Pizza Cop!" Guess Donut Don decided to embrace other food groups.

Of course, can't you tell? He loves pizza as is oh so wonderfully displayed
in this episode.

14) "Poker? That's kind of hard isn't it?" Hold onto your wallet with both
hands, Donut Don...it could be emptied before you know it.

The kid can definitely bluff, I'll give her that. She seems so sweet and
innocent, and Don falls for it hook, line, and sinker!

15) "He's not afraid of anything!" Lisa about Nick.
"Except maybe marriage and children" Schanke.

From Schanke's perspective, no truer statement was ever spoken.

16) Nice little interlude in the bathroom when Natalie is digging the bullet
out of Nick's shoulder. It works...but did anyone else find it "odd" that
they get excited about Nick feeling pain. Judging by the reactions of
various vampires, it doesn't appear that they don't feel an injury. It
still seems to hurt...it just isn't crippling pain.

My theory on this is that since they've been trying for so long to find
small shades of mortality for Nick throughout their search for a "cure,"
that Natalie would no doubt be excited to see he feels something like pain
(not crippling but pain nevertheless), from an injury.

17) man, when Nick sleeps...he really sleeps like the dead (rimshot)

18) interesting twist....they allude to Nick being more human and subject to
damage, just before Lisa uses a mirror to blind him and setup the final
battle on more even ground then would normally be the case.

In my opinion if they hadn't the final battle might have been less
climactic. But just an opinion as I said.
