I worked in a hospital for years, and we often used (clean, disposable) bedpans to hold popcorn, or (same) urine measuring cylinders as water jugs. I imagine Natalie and Grace were pretty inured to the whole idea. -Megan Roxana Elizondo <roxeliz@h.......> wrote: This really cracks me up how Natalie has complete disregard for the eww factor in others. Anyone who works in a morgue has seen it all, and becomes very immune to what would make the general public squeamish. Trust me, you just don't think about the environment being yucky. I managed an O.R./Central Supply for a military hospital. The stories I could tell you! Emesis basins make excellent salad and soup bowls. Forceps are great for eating spaghetti and noodles. We actually used large speculums (female exam instrument) to serve pasta salad at a hospital pot luck. Remember, the autoclaves (the hot steam machines used to sterilize the instruments) are more powerful than regular dishwashers. I had rather eat from autoclaved medical equipment than dishes washed at a restaurant. My husband who is a physician and I cracked up when we originally saw the FK episode with this scene because it was sooooo true to real life. Most people who work in the medical/dental profession get very immune to the ewww factor; weak stomachs need not apply. <LOL> A little off-note, working at a military hospital in the late 70's was so "MASH" like. That TV show wasn't that far off beat! A variety of medical instruments can serve double duty at a pot-luck or lunch between co-workers, and what we consider normal meal time conversation will make most people leave their meals and walk away. Sometimes, when we go out as a group, we have to make an effort to remember where we're at. At one practice where I worked, we got a new administrator over the lab, who was completely clueless about the operation of the lab. She looked at everything from an admistrative point of view, which doesn't always work well in a lab environment. So, we invited her to a lab pot-luck, and gave her the royal "ick" treatment. When she left early, our supervisor accused us of being cruel, and of course we just gave her the innocent childrebn look and continued our meal. I can very easily see Nat and Grace applying the same methods to a similar sittuation. Most people have minds like concrete: mixed up or permanently set. ----- Original Message ---- From: Deborah Hymon <debh@e.......> To: FORKNI-L@l.......
