I always thought that was part of Nick's problem. He wasn't going to do to
Richard what LaCroix had done to him. As i remember Nick told Janette he
didn't think the eternal bond was necessary or words to that affect.
I wonder if that's what goes wrong each time he brings someone over. it's
not so much he does the wrong thing, he just won't compel their
subservience.
Then again maybe it's harder to do in the 20th Century. Communication is so
much better now than it was when Nick was created. In his day his
killings in one village wouldn't necessarily follow him to the next village.
Richard's fatal mistake was to kill the girl who was going to be the crown
witness In doing so proved to both Nick and Natalie he was out of control
and starting to kill for the sake of killing. Or was he being
affected by the blood of the people he killed. After all if a vampire
absorbs the life of their victims through their blood, Richard was
certainly overdosing on villianry.

That's an interesting observation. I hadn't noticed that before. I realized
that Nick was grabbing something, but didn't catch that it was her hand. Had to
re-watch the scene again last night.
To me it seems as if she moved her hand in a reflexive gesture to shield her
brother from Nick. He grabs it to keep her from intervening while he feeds.
