My guess is that Nick tuned it out because he refused to have the same power over Richard as Lacroix had over him. That scene is perhaps hands down one of my all time favorites scenes *ever* on the show. My jaw just dropped when I saw the unedited scene for the first time on DVD. Catherine Disher really knocked it out of the ballpark. Her Gemini nomination for this episode was well deserved. Natalie goes though a smorgasbord of emotions. When she arrives at Nick’s loft she’s distraught, then pragmatic about the reality of Richard’s injuries, then steadfast and determined when she presents Nick with her idea. At the same time she’s trying to convince herself that her proposal of bringing Richard across is a good one. Deep down she knows it’s wrong but she’s blinded by grief and love. When Nick rejects the idea it’s a jolt to her system. To hear the word ‘No’ out loud takes the wind out of her sails momentarily and Natalie responds with the only emotion she hasn’t really entertained yet—anger, and when it consumes her it got very ugly. Disher and the writer painted an unflattering picture of Natalie that I think was really necessary. It gave her character some dimension considering that up till this point in the series Natalie as a character had mostly been viewed as Nick's support system (not that that's bad because it's an important and necessary role for her to play) but this episode really gave Natalie some demons of her own to deal with. She pleaded, cajoled, and when everything else failed she bullied Nick into trying to persuade him. You can really see her grasping at straws when she starts talking about how the sun isn't really as big a problem as they thought it was. Yeah right Nat. Keep telling yourself that. You're absolutely right that she pushed Nick's buttons because she knew exactly what to say to get him to do what she wanted. She calls into question Nick’s humanity; the one thing Natalie knows is precious to him. Emotionally Nick hadn’t let anybody inside in quite a long time so other than Janette and LaCroix no one knows Nick as well as Natalie does and she uses it to her advantage. She knows exactly what buttons to push to get a reaction out of Nick. Was is right? No it's not but it's easy to empathize with her situation. I also love what they did with her appearance. When she picks up Richard at the start of the episode she's so put together. She's polished, professional, and lovely. By the time she gets to the loft after a long night at the hospital she's a shell of the woman we'd seen. Her clothes are rumpled, tears line her face, and her hair is completely askew. She's a wreck and she's trying so hard to keep it together. Another thing that was great in that scene is the way Geraint empties the wine glass when the script calls for Natalie to throw some more venom his way. The tip was a very simple movement that carried so much weight and flowed beautifully. >From: P J <blue_twingo772@y.......> >I like the look on Natalie's face when Nick brings her brother across. >Something between shock >and uncertainty. Actually this is the first time >that she sees Nick actually biting someone. > Petra. This is an interesting observation which I hadn't thought about. This scene works for me on so many levels. Like you said it's probably the first time Natalies seen Nick bite anybody (it's probably been a while since he has as well) but being in that close proximity to the vampire must be sobering. It continues to drive home the reality of what Natalie's gotten herself into. Nick is a vampire and while he could very well be the object of her brother's salvation, it doesn't come without consequences. I like it when Natalie, who is very obviously conflicted at the time, and the vamped out Nick grab on to each other. Bringing someone across is a very personal thing but there they are together. She's tethering Nick to the humanity he's afraid he'll lose by going through with the deed by standing firmly with him and he's offering her the strength he possesses as a friend. I wonder if the hand grab was something that was in the script or improvised? Either way it's very powerful. One last thing, Natalie's premature outrage when she believed Nick "killed" Richard was amusing and showed that her protectiveness over her brother was overriding her common sense. "When was the last time you tried to do this!?" Uh Nat let's not forget that you were the one that wanted Nick to do this. It wasn't his idea so let's try to show a little gratitude huh.
