I really enjoyed the show and the shots of the tower caught my eye to. What I
found interesting was when Henry (Kyle Schmid) said that two vampires could not
be in the same place at one time with getting territorial. That concept was
totally different then Forever Knight where keeping your "children" close was so
important. Did anyone else catch that?

Hi-
Yes, I did catch that about only 1 vampire per territory. Lacroix would
so not do well with that I think considering his tendency to keep Nick
within his reach or at least Janette...
I personally kinda like the idea of the vampire family, definitely makes
eternity seem less lonely.

First I want to say I'm totally in love with this show. I love that the
characters are portrayed by actors who are a bit older. I haven't been this
excited since FK first aired. By the way, People magazine's March 9th
edition has a two page (Full-center of magazine) bulletin for Blood Ties.
Who knows, these type of articles may be collectable in the future just like
the FK stuff.

Yes, I did catch Henry's comment, and it was very different from Forever
Knight. I'm not sure I like this trait in 'my' vampires. It sure makes it
more interesting when the T.V show or book has more than one vampire
interacting with the local mortals. Can you imagine if another vampire comes
to town and is attracted to Vicky, moving in on Henry's territory? I enjoyed
watching the FK vampire's contact with Nat, Schanke, Tracy, etc. In my
opinion it made the show more interesting.

I agree with Lisa, there were several Toronto scenes that reminded me of FK,
also the flashbacks even though they were filmed different. Also, the
coroner's humor reminded me of Nat, but I did feel it was forced. Catherine
Disher is wonderful at humor, and proved it the few times the writers
allowed Nat to have fun. Catherine delivered her lines with ease and her
timing was great!

I can't wait for another episode of Blood Ties this Sunday.

For example, we no longer had things like LC running
a strip contest with that cheesy speech about getting
in touch with oneself by getting naked.

Where was that? *is surprised*

I never knew that two of my fave shows wound up
against each other that way...and I think USA didn't
have smooth sailing with HL and its spinoff either,
but that's not for this board.

That was part of the major plotline of Tanya Huff's
books. Keep in mind that this show is based on a very
well known author's books, and from what I have read
she has had some say in the scripts. (I'm a big fan.)

Blood Ties as a series is based on the books written
by Tanya Huff, an Ontario native (which is why the
show is mostly based in Toronto, although it is shot
mostly on location in Vancouver.) A couple of years
ago at the conference I attend annually, one of the
Tor editors was discussing the fact that when you have
something that has a dedicated fan base (in this case
she was talking about BSG fanfic) she said a lot of
times the fan fiction is as good as, if not better,
than some of the original writers'. Ahem. I think we
have enough fan fiction that if FK ever DOES get
resurrected, we have enough fodder for at least, oh, a
gazillion seasons :)

Lisa, I'm really glad you went into all this background in such detail. It
reminds me of too many other cancellations: Angel and Crusade come to mind.
It's horrible to see backroom politics getting FK cancelled like that. But
it's good to hear that the ratings *weren't* the reason, after all. I had
always thought that was the reason.

I so wish they'd told the Highlander folk to buzz off with their demands,
and done all that (badly needed!) publicity for FK. We could have--should
have--had more. (Mourns.)

That line caught my attention also, however, not having read Tanya Huff's
series of books, it reminded me instead of another vampire series: Chelsea Quinn
Yarbro's St. Germain novels. Aside from this issue, however, Henry bears little
resemblance to the St. Germain character, but rather is more like our beloved
Forever Knight vampires in many aspects. My interest has definitely been piqued
and I'm looking forward to seeing more of Blood Ties. Even though it's based on
an established series of books, I know I'll still be looking for comparisons
(and differences) with FK.

For those of you who have read Tanya Huff's books, how did the pilot compare
to the written novel in terms of faithfully rendering the character from page
to screen?

It was quite close in some respects, but off in others. They messed with soeme
of the plot details of the first book. The actor playing Henry, while very
cute in a Heath Ledger clone sort of way, does not really resemble the Henry of
the books. Henry, as described, while appearing young, had a certain gravitas
about his appearance and demeanor that the Henry of the show lacks, IMO. They
would also seem to have rather predictably eliminated Henry's bisexuality.

They are also mispronouncing the last name of Vicky's ex police partner Mike
Cellucci. "C", before an "e" in Italian is pronouced "ch"(as in "cello"). It
should be "Chellucchi". They are pronouncing it "Selluchi"

Does anyone know if they are using the storylines of the books to create
episodes? The preview for the second episode seems to involve Voodoo. I've read
through the books twice and I don't remember Voodoo.

Jeannie,

A NEW SHOW

(NOT meaning to repeat all the past posts!)
Most of these questions have been answered here on the list, but perhaps a
few members aren't receiving all the posts. I've had that problem in the
past. Anyway, here again is the info.

***A private investigator, Vicki Nelson, joins forces with a 450 year old
vampire, Henry, to solve supernatural crimes. Sparks fly between Vicky and
Henry, and Vicki is torn between Henry (the vampire) and her former cop
partner and lover, Mike (a mortal). The series is based on Tanya Huff's
Blood book novels. The show is set in Toronto and has detectives solving
crimes just like Forever Knight.

Blood Ties aired in a two hour movie this past Sunday night on Lifetime T.V.
The movie can now be downloaded at I-Tunes; part I is free, part II is now
available for $1.99. The show will on Lifetime T.V. every Sunday at 10 P.M.
(Eastern Time).

Lifetime's Web Page on Blood Ties:

http://www.lifetimetv.com/shows/bloodties/

Bloodlines: a fan site for the series Blood Ties:

http://www.bloodties-bloodlines.com/articles.html

This site is really worth checking out, and seems to be the main fan site.
Bloodlines is very similar to Kristen's FK Site, minus the musical videos.

***Extra info: Blood Ties is a Canadian television series based on the Blood
Books by Tanya Huff. It premiered on March 11, 2007 on Lifetime Television,
and is set to premiere on Fall of 2007 on Canadian television. It has also
been bought by UK channel Living and is set to start there before it's
airing in Canada.

It's been a long time since

Coming out of lurk mode for a little bit, It's been a long time since
I've read the books but it seemed to be fairly close to the book, but then,
like I said it's been a long time. I might be misremembering things from some
of the other books and mushing them together. I know that in the books Henry
was a romance novelist and not a graphic artist. I always thought that was so
amusing. Though I can see how a graphic/comic book artist would translate
better now a days. Henry was always one of my favorite characters in the
books and I like the actor they got to play him.
OK I'm off to find more coffee. (I don't normally mind working 'vampire'
hours, as my mom puts it, but by the time I get used to working till 3am again
I'll be moving.) ~Bast
