Subject: Overheard at Richard III

Despite 30-degree temperatures (and concomitant snow and ice) in Washington
DC, there were no empty seats in the Lansburgh Shakespeare Theatre last Friday
night when I saw Geraint Wyn Davies in "Richard III." I don't have a review to
add to those already posted (other than to say that it was excellent), but I did
overhear a comment from a young member of a first-year college tour group that I
thought summed it up rather well:

"The guy they have playing Richard," she said with giddy enthusiasm, "is really,
*really* good!" Well, I could hardly disagree with her there. During the same
break, she also wondered aloud to her companions as to whether the children
playing the little princes might be GWD's actual kids. "Yeah, I know he's playing
a guy who wants to kill them and all," she said, "but when he hugs them, you can
just tell that he really likes kids."

Are college students getting more perceptive these days, or what?

I saw this tshirt and had to order it. I might even
have something put on it like "I don't burn, I
implode". :)

I think Bianca is brasher than Janette maybe Bianca hasn't the years
that Janette had and remember Janette had a great teacher looks like
Bianca didn't have some one like LaCroix to give her the elegance like
	Janette has.

"You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I
thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the
terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them?
So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness
of the universe". Marcus, B5

Keeping in mind that an actor's character is only as good as the writer; that
Janette was rather stiff in earliest episodes and matured throughout the series
as a *recurring* regular cast member, I agree that Bianca is the first vampire
I have seen on TV that *approaches* Deb as Janette. (Note I put "wannabe" in
the original subject line, not "competition".)

I didn't find anything particularly wrong with the way the character was
written. I thought the character fit the tone of the way The Dresden Files is
written in general. As someone wrote, Bianca is "brash". It gave her a "bad
girl" appeal. That makes her a good match for Harry Dresden, as he is brash. But
where Bianca is "brash," Janette, I think, is more "sensual" and "seductive."

But then "sensual" and "seductive" was probably the point of Janette's
character. She was representative of the "seductiveness" of the "dark side" Nick
was trying escape from. I don't especially recall Janette as being "stiff" in the
early episodes, but perhaps she was. Still, I think the tone of the character
was always subtle as LaCroix was the dynamic one in Nick's life.

Stacy Haiduk as Lillie Langtry in Kindred the Embraced and/or Melinda Clarke
as (the human) Lady Heather in CSI have more of the same vibe as Janette than
Bianca did for me.

Compartively, the "Bad Blood" episode of the Dresden Files wasn't about being
a vampire, so there was no need for the writers to show Bianca as "seductive"
in the same sense. Attractive, yet dangerous for Dresden and capable of
running a criminal enterprise and being ruthless, yes. Here "brash" was
probably more appropriate than seductive.

I agree with you, it is in the way the character is written. I just felt that
Janette and Bianca are written in two different tones. Was one better a
better representation than the other? Not really. As both served their respective
purposes well in their respective series. I don't see Bianca as confidante to
someone like Nick or obedient "daughter" to a LaCroix. On the other hand,
Janette wouldn't make a plausible illicit drug runner, deserving the wrath of a
body like the High Council.

Subject: Re: Janette wannabe?

As both a writer and an actor, I can say that is not necessarily always true. A
bad actor is not going to make a well written character look good. The best
dialogue can become utterly lifeless if delivered that way. However, I have seen
situations where a good actor gives some light to a badly written character
although that doesn't always happen.

Recurring characters do often blossom due to character development by both
the writer and the actor.

I only saw the very last few minutes of this episode of the Dresden Files so
can't really compare Bianca to Janette. However, I did recognize her from the
first Dresden Files book (unless I'm confusing female vampires). There's
similarities, but I personally don't see them as being "very" similar characters. They
are, however, both strong female vampires.
