Subject: Report: Ger in Richard III (spoilers for the play and his performance)

Hi everyone! Hope everyone in the USA is having a good President's Weekend.

I've just returned from watching Ger's amazing performance in Richard III.
I've lurked on the lists since the show was still on the air, but till now I've
been one of those people who doesn't attend conventions and doesn't usually go
to events featuring actors on shows I'm into, so I'd never attended any of the
auction events, conventions or any other opportunities to see the actors in
person. It's just my thing and of course your mileage may vary--I realize that
it's the characters I've fallen for and it makes it hard for me to suspend
disbelief and watch a show when I've met the actors. Now our beloved FK is safely
tucked away in tapes and discs in my home, and I really wanted to see the play,
so I decided to take the plunge and go see one of my favorite actors in person.

We're having a Shakespeare festival in DC, so let me tell you how cool it is to
walk down the street where the theater is and see posters hanging from
streetlights and in the windows there and in the bookstores with scary-looking pictures
of Ger-as-Richard III, the hunchback tyrant-king looking back at you. The play
was a tour-de-force for Ger, and he received a well-deserved standing ovation.
He did the whole play, which was about 3 hours long, scrunched over with
something on his shoulder to make him look hunchbacked and with about a 6-inch
Rocky-horror-type boot on one foot only, which must have challenged his entire
spine, pelvis to shoulders, the entire time. Mind you, he does this *every
night*. I have no earthly idea how he (or anyone for that matter) memorizes
all that Shakespearean dialogue and then moves all around the stage, sliding
down firehouse-type poles, fighting with swords, daggers and a mace/cane/crutch.
In the first half of the play, he flirts and charms the audience (it's built
into the dialogue), so that, as is intentionally disturbing, you find yourself
laughing out loud as Richard describes how he is going to get rid of everyone
that is in the way of his getting the throne. Ger was really delightful and
even with all the dense dialogue you could really understand what was going on.

In the second half, Richard gets very scary, and you get to watch Ger change
the character to reveal more and deeper darkness, quite gradually until finally
you hear someone familiar : Nicholas de Brabant , or an aspect of him, to me,
imperious and more truly evil than they ever let us see on FK (Richard's voice is
higher but is otherwise is quite similar). Maybe it's what Nick would have
been like if he'd lived another ten years before being brought over. But this
character isn't a vampire or a demon, he's just a vicious, charming human
monster.

Wow. Even with the cold and the ice here in DC, I am so glad I went. If you
have the chance to come to DC to see the play, I think you will see a memorable
performance from Ger.

Love to all,
Laila

(for those interested, Nick might have known or at least known of Richard III,
who was briefly King of England in the third quarter of the 15th C. Also, the
16thc characterization of Richard III by Shakespeare is political (Richard was
defeated by a Tudor) and perhaps controversial, and there are those who say
that Richard III has been unfairly maligned. Maybe there's a fanfic in there
somewhere...

Subject: Challenges posted

Hi,
Don suggested I send this to the main list. I have
posted a couple of challenges over the last year or
so, most notably one on Valentine's Day (a NN
post-Last Knight affair.)

Perhaps my "challenge" is not in keeping with some of
the past efforts. I was considering a challenge to be
someone writes part 1 and then treats it as a
round-robin affair. If you are interested and didn't
get the last fic challenge I posted (Challenge: A
Gathering of Flowers) just let me know and I'll resend
it off list.
