OK, I saw the movie. Ed Speleers, the actor that
starred in it, has never been in film/TV until this
year. He is 20 (although the character Eragon is 17 in
the film), so I can see where the "wooden" comments
came from. He was a bit stiff in some of the scenes
although there was one near the beginning that
reminded me of Ger/Nick a LOT. I don't think he did a
bad job for a novice screen actor, and he shows
promise.
Part of the whole thing may have to do with the fact
that the book was written by a teenager, and it comes
across. I haven't read the book but I've read a lot of
interviews with Christopher Paolini, and was 15 when
he finished it. It was originally self-published, then
a teenager at one of the schools he toured/promoted it
at convinced his author/step father to suggest it to
his publisher. So, an actor can only do so much with
the dialogue he is given. Just my two cents :)
