It is a religious symbol. Gee can you imagine Nick going into work on Ash Wednesday? That could be a little uncomfortable. Maybe he'd have to book off. -Amanda "This thing... man... whatever it is...evil may have created it, left its mark on it, but evil does not rule it. I'm not sure...but he made a comment that has me wondering. He said that some felt they were ripping off FK by casting JK...does anyone have any insight on that? I don't see it myself, the characters weren't similar despite the shows having some similarities. So the comment confuses me. When is Nat's birthday exactly? Can someone help? Unfortunately, because Forever Knight had multiple screenwriters and no "bible" to keep writers consistent with one another, the show featured a number of really glaring contradictions, with pieces of information in one show in direct conflict with something that might have been said or done in another. Natalie's birthday is one of those "facts" that has been presented in such a dual fashion. In "Last Knight," she states that her birthday is April 14. But in "Only the Lonely," it's very clear that her birthday is in the summer; a bit of detective work reveals that it is June 24. Many fans generally take the first presentation of any fact to be canon unless the evidence of the second (or subsequent) presentation(s) is overwhelming. For many of us, though, *nothing* said or done in "Last Knight" is canonical, simply because of *how* the episode is presented. Like the "fantasy" or "hallucinatory" sequences in "Curiouser and Curiouser," most of "Last Knight" was shot with odd camera angles, depth of field, and distorting filters; the lighting featured strange colors, flashing patterns, and unnatural shadowing; and the camera motion was erratic, often running to just this side of nauseating. It would seem that Geraint, who directed, was trying to echo the canon history of visually defining that which is not real, and I for one choose to accept that message as definitive. So. If you, as I do, refuse to accept that Natalie's birthday is April 14, and you choose instead to accept the first birthday the show defined, which is in June, how do you know which date? Here's the (relatively exhaustive) logic. "Only the Lonely" opens with Nat's birthday. She has her party at work, then goes home to Sidney and announces that she's out of cat food. At the grocery store, she (literally) runs into Roger Jamison. This is all on a Tuesday, as we later learn. The sun comes up. Back at work, Nat gets a call from Roger, who describes himself as "the guy you decked last night." He invites her for a "late lunch." Even though it's a "late" lunch, the sun is still relatively high in the sky (short shadows, not long ones.) Nat & Roger eat at a park with a beach visible in the background, and people are wearing swimsuits and playing volleyball on the beach. You can see an occupied lifeguard stand. (Now, people may wear shorts in April in Toronto, but I'll bet the rent very few of them go swimming in Lake Ontario until at least late May.) Natalie talks about enjoying the day, and Roger tells her, "That's what summer's for." Nat and Roger come home to find a jealous Nick in her apartment. Now it's Thursday. Nick meets Nat at work and apologizes for messing up her date with Roger. She tells him she "accepted your apology last night." Nick leaves. Nat, in a snit, calls Roger, even though it's "very late." They arrange a get-together; Nat says, "Tomorrow night sounds perfect." It's daylight again. Nat and Roger are driving to the greenhouse. It gets dark. Nick shows up at the morgue, where a distressed Grace tells him Roger matched the murderer's DNA. Nick goes to Nat's apartment and finds her date book, which he opens. At the bottom of the page is preprinted the word, "Saturday"; next to that, in a box probably intended for the date, someone has handwritten "28." (Among the handwritten tasks slated for Saturday is "LAUNDRY!") There is a dividing line immediately above the word "Saturday," and above that line, in bold print, are the words: "2 p. Roger--picnic?" During the ep, both Nick and Natalie flash back to her 28th birthday (described as such by one of the morgue employees), when Nick is brought into the morgue in a very messy body bag. Nat opens the bag, then she turns away to answer the phone. Nick wakes up and climbs off the table, causing Nat to start and drop the phone. As she does this, she steps to the side, allowing a very brief view of the calendar on the wall behind her. The word "June" is clearly visible just over her left shoulder. So from this, we can conclude, for purposes of canon: Natalie goes on the picnic with Roger on Friday, June 27; Nick and Nat quarrel in the morgue on Thursday, June 26; Nat and Roger have lunch on Wednesday, June 25, and..... TA DA! Natalie's birthday is Tuesday, June 24. I have no idea if this answers your question; more likely, it creates fifteen or twenty more. :-) But at least you get some idea of the extent serious fans will go to in order to establish canon in our own minds! -- -------------- Stephanie Babbitt (sbabbitt@b.......), Atlanta, GA Vaquera (Because I Can), MadNatter, N&NPacker Nobody Dies. So the comment confuses me. That was just his opinion. I don't see it either. Vampire detectives are actually quite common. Some people accuse PN Elrod of ripping off FK, even though she was working on her first vampire detective novel before FK. In fact, another writer (I *think* Lee Killough) was also writing a vampire detective novel about the same time. Or else JK was just trying to tease the fans <g> Which, knowing him, is entirely possible. --Libs ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2006 14:28:38 +0000 From: Nancy Kaminski <nancykam@c.......> Subject: Re: John Kapelos Angel question From: Libratsie@a....... > > another writer (I *think* Lee Killough) was also writing a vampire detective > novel about the same time. "Blood Walk" and "Blood Games" by Lee Killough predate FK. In fact, the blurb on my copy of "Blood Walk" says something to the effect of, "before there was Nick Knight, there was Garreth <whatever his last name is>" They're extremely good books, incidentally, very much like FK in that Garreth is a blond San Francisco cop who, despite having been turned into a vampire by a mysterious woman he was trying to arrest (he bites her back in the struggle) manages to stay on the force. The vampire mythos is different from FK (he can function in daylight, although with a great deal of difficulty) but it's still half police procedural. There's none of the heavy Gothic stuff of Ann Rice in them. And Libs might be pleased to note that Garreth survives mainly by drinking rat blood. <g> Nancy Kaminski nancykam@c....... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2006 17:10:47 +0100 From: Cousin Lucilla <cousinlucilla@f.......> Subject: Re: John Kapelos Angel question I don't know these books and when they came out, but I think we shouldn't forget that Nick Knight is older than FK. The movie was done in 1989 and it probably took them a couple of years to go from idea to script to filming it. So, it might just have been the time for 'Vamp Cops/Detectives' in general.
