OK, for those of you who so generously and
conscientiously sent me cards BEFORE 12/25, I
apologize, but be patient. Your cards will have an
original FK Fiction in them :)

I apologize in advance if you get this more than once. There is just under
two hours to go before the deadline for entries for the DarkNN Yuletide Awards.
If you have a story that hasn't been submitted yet, be sure to get it to Stacy
before midnight Pacific Time.

As of right now, there are only three entries for the Yuletide Awards,
so we are doing away with the adult/non-adult categories and just voting
amongst the three. As soon as the stories are up on my webpage, voting
will begin.

Also, I'm not sure there will be a contest next year, as participation
has been dismal. I'm sorry to see less and less fanfic on the lists, as
this is still my first love. I know that Real Life has taken up much of
people's time (including my own), but it seems to me that the fandom is
dying a slow death. That being the case, I don't want to take up bandwidth
or waste people's time if there isn't an interest in the awards.
I hope you all have a great New Year! Good luck to the entrants, and to
the rest of you, happy reading!

Hey, I wrote and posted an Xmas story this year! It just wasn't Nick and
Nat :) I've been all inspired to write the last few weeks. It's been great.
Almost like old times.

Just because as many people didn't have time to write this year does NOT
mean that "Fandom is dying." This list has been around for over 10 years now, I
believe, and I and others don't plan to go anywhere anytime soon.

The holidays were particularly busy for me this year, and I didn't have a
computer that was working well until the day after Thanksgiving.

Me things the prediction of the FK lists' demise are a tad premature ;-)
We're not as talkative as in the past, and there's not as many members, but for
a show that hasn't had new episodes in ten years, I think both lists are doing
 pretty well! <g>

I agree with Libby. The only reason I had enough time this year, is because I
am currently unemployed. K. C. I know it is a lot of work, but please
consider keeping the contest for next year. Phylis

Thank you for all that you do... It isn't a waste of bandwidth for me, nor a
waste of my time... but speaking of time, the holidays is just too stressful a
time to be creative. When one is working 60-80 hrs/week, writing just isn't
possible (sleep barely is). I love to write, and still am but struggle to
remember what the required elements were, especially when they may be an odd
combination of things. Instead of contest, why not a challenge or roundrobin?
Let
authors spark their own creativity. I tried but can't force it. Besides, I'd
love to read something you've written KC!!!

I had every intention of writing a story this year. Even had an idea
and the beginning of an outline. But this fall, I finally got a new
job (my old job was extremely stressful and an emotionally bad place
for me) So although the actual job is less stressfull, I am still
getting used to things and sorting out when I can write now.
It is really bugging me that I have several stories waiting to be
written. I have a whole folder that I carry places with me just in
case I can write, but nothing has been happening.

I am definitely still in fandom - got my brother the second season
for christmas. I am planning to revisit TO this summer (actually
going to see Colm Feore in Stratford) where I can hopefully have a
bit more leisurely tour than last time. And of course everytime I
see a commercial for '24' I look for Ger in the background.

Hopefully I can get my time managed a bit more soon.

I have to agree with Karen. Real LifeŽ tends to be busiest this time of
year (at least it is for me with a lot of essays and term papers to
grade) plus I don't feel inspired if I have to follow strict rules, e.g.
certain things that have to be incorporated into a story - the opposite
happens.
A simple topic challenge with a deadline is too much for me these days.
Maybe people would write more if the rules were less rigid.
Also, I find it quite natural not to put fandom and fiction in the front
row on Christmas (or whatever other holiday you celebrate) but family.

Subject: Re: Yuletide Awards (YA) and Raven Award (RA)

PLEASE, don't cancel the Yuletide Awards! We need more N&N FK stories, and
that's why the Yuletide Awards was created.

I've entered the Yuletide Awards the last two years, and have to agree it's
difficult to incorporate certain required elements into a story. Sometimes
they don't fit into a story idea or they're silly items that don't work in a
serious story.

I would like to see the Yuletide Awards continue, but without a required
list of things to incorporate into the story. I think deadline
announcements should be periodically posted as a reminder to keep the
interest alive, especially for new members benefit (they may be unaware of
the YA).

However, since the Yuletide Awards was created for "Dark Nick and Nat"
stories, I strongly suggest that the Yuletide Awards remain as such. Without
waiting for a list of requirements for the story, authors could work on
their story earlier in the year, and it wouldn't interfere with their
holidays. Last year I edited on Christmas Eve just to meet the deadline. If
the requirements had been posted earlier, I would have had more time to work
on the story, and this wouldn't have happened. Once October rolls around,
most of us start to get into the Fall and Winter holiday whirlwind, and
don't have much time for writing.

Also, what happened to the Raven Awards??? I had written a story to enter
when the cancellation of the annual event was announced . I would like to
see the RA revived! If I recall, the Raven Awards were for all stories, not
just N&N.

Subject: Getting to know us

Well,
There are a lot of us that pipe up every now and then
(or more often in some cases!),and I wanted to see if
anyone else would be interested in introducing or
re-introducing themselves.

Below are a few questions and (my) answers. Feel free
to respond if you would like to get to know other
people.

Who are you, where do you live, what do you do?
Kristen Fife, I live in [Xxxxxxx], and in my "real life"
I'm a recruiter in the high tech field. I'm also a
writer working on my first full length novel.

Who is your favorite FK character and why?
Of course I love Nick, but my favorite character is
probably Natalie because I can relate to her on a lot
of levels.

How long have you been a FK fan? How did you get
started?
I first saw the show three years ago on the SciFi
channel. I'd had an idea for a book, but had never
done any serious writing before, and I was inspired
(OK, obsessed ;) by FK. I decided to try writing
fanfic as "practice". You pretty much know the rest :)

Have you ever met anyone off the FK lists?
Yes! I've met Deb and Valerie last Labor Day and I
also met several folks up in Toronto last fall when I
went up for vacation and took the FK Location Tour. I
intend to go back to Toronto again, hopefully this
summer. *Hi guys!!!

Favorite Episodes for each season?
Only the Lonely, Be My Valentine, My Boyfriend is a
Vampire (Ger just seemed to have fun with this one!).
I admit it, I'm a NNPacker, as so obviously those
episodes appeal to me :)

Other hobbies?
Oooo, I have WAY too many interests and not enough
time. I've been a long-time member of the SCA (Society
for Creative Anachronism), which is a medieval
reenactment group. I admit that the flashbacks are a
large part of the appeal to me in FK. (I'm also a huge
Highlander fan.) I love to travel, fine food and wine,
and of course writing has become a major influence in
my life. I hang out locally with some of the Goth
crowd and I even have a set of custom vampire fangs
:)This summer I'm going to Greece for two weeks with
my family for my 40th birthday, which is a life-long
dream.

Family status?
Single, no kids (note that I related to Natalie
earlier? :) I have been in an on-again off-again
relationship for several years but it is "off" right
now. I work too much! I do have two cats and he has
two cats and a dog whom I adore and help take care of.

Have you ever met anyone famous?
Hmmm. Well, I had the pleasure of hanging out with
Jacqueline Carey and Sherrilyn Kenyon at the annual
writers conference I attend, and when I was in college
I worked at a restaurant and got to serve breakfast to
Mikhail Baryshnikov (corn flakes, black coffee.) And
I've been to the home of the CTO of Microsoft and had
lunch with Jeff Bezos (president of Amazon.com).

Happy New Year one and all! Feel free to write to me
off list. I always enjoy making new friends and
chances are good that one day I'll meet you!

KC,
I really enjoy the competition, but this year the
elements were a bit too disjointed. I happen to enjoy
the challenge of required elements, but perhaps a
"theme" with one element would work better? By the
time I finished getting an idea for snowglobes and
travel, it was after the 24th. I agree with what
others have said regarding the time line. I think
maybe that starting in August would be more realistic
due to the hectic nature of the holidays. However, I
would be very disappointed to lose the Yuletide
competition! I try to write at least a short fic every
month just so folks know I haven't dropped off, and
this year I did a period vignette for the holidays. I
AM working on several stories, but unless it is very
short it takes me several weeks to write one story
with my current life schedule.
