Subject: More FK Fan Fiction??

Hello:

I hope I am not offending the owner of the listserv by posting this here?
Since people are talking about wanting more FK fanfiction, I wanted to let
people know that I set up a Forever Knight Fanfiction and Challenge
community on Live Journal. I checked the URL, and found a new story today!
(N/N). SURPRISE! We are still very new, and setting up the community took
awhile, and I am still in recruit mode! Memberships to LJ are free, and the
board is ad-free. You need to join to post, but not to read or provide
feedback. Also, feel free to leave me feedback about the site, as well as
ideas for challenges, in Guestbook (Sign Please!--found in the Menu).
Drabbles, crossovers, one-shots to WIPs welcome. Hopefully, Mel will let me
affiliate with her site, since I don't have a web-site affiliation yet (more
email).

I hope to hear from some of you soon! The web address is

I honestly, non-confrontationally want to ask a question: Why do people set
up new lists when the good ol' FKFIC-L languishes without any traffic? Why
not do these interesting things on the grandmommy of all FK fic lists? Do
people now crave the graphics, the colors, that come with the HTML-enabled
interfaces? Are words and plain text not enough any more?

I've always been puzzled about this. At first it was the factions peeling
off, which meant that general fans didn't see faction-specific fic much. And
now it's general fic running away. Why? I just don't get it. Maybe I've got
a loyalty to the fic list that new fans just don't. But I'm truly puzzled.

I haven't written any fan fic in a while, but when I do, I usually do post it
to the faction specific list AND fkfanfic. The past few times I've posted to
forkni-l, besides the usual "I enjoyed it" feedback, I've gotten, "I saw your
name on a story but I don't read Screed fic so I didn't read it."

Then why bother e-mailing me?

I think a lot of other writers also sense the "you write for such and such a
faction so I'm not going to read it" attitude of *some* fk fans.

In truth, I see the same stories on my faction specific lists as on fkfic. In
other words, like me, a lot of writers post to both.

I don't get it either honestly. Back when I first joined (1995!), there were
so many posts on both forkni-l and fkfic-l that I could understand factions
having separate places to post. I have personally always been an inclusive
fanfic-reader though. I'd rather read a well-written story about a character
I am less interested in than a poorly-written story about my favorite
character or relationship. I also don't like having to subscribe to multiple
lists to seek out stories, I'm a one-stop shopping kind of girl. I understand
that not everyone shares these preferences, but for the sake of those like me,
I hope that authors of every faction still keep posting on fkfic-l.

I'd also like to point out that since 1995/96, the Internet and its options
have exploded. This is a good thing. I prefer e-mail lists. I have friends who
prefer message boards. A lot of friends are really into Live Journals right
now.

We have our reasons. My computer is older and I sort of like the idea of
messages and stories popping right into my e-mail box where I can save them if
I don't have time to read them right now, or delete them if they are not of
interests. Some of my friends like the energy of a fast moving message board
where sometimes you are allowed to post pictures and use cut little signatures
and so forth.

Some of my friends are addicted to the "vibes" surrounding Live Journal. This
sounds like something I might love as well when I get a new computer (and if
I have the time!)

Different strokes for different folks. Some people prefer pairing Nick and
Nat. Some prefer LaCroix and Nick. SOme of us KNOW that it should and always
will be Screed and his Natsie Ratsie.

Same difference with venues. Those of us who really crave attention and
feedback post fan fic several places.

Of course we have less traffic than when the show was originally on. I've
noticed that with my FK/BtVS/ANgel list. However, I expect FORKNI-L and
FKFIC-L will keep on keeping on for an endless, forever night....

That goes for me, too. I would never have read fiction that was billed as
Vachon-centric except for Apache's amazing stories posted to the main list.
And I always post first to FKFIC-L first, and a faction list (generally the
UF) second. People can read it or not, but they should have the chance to in
the first place.

I'm sure there has been lots of fic I've missed because it was only posted
on a small, specialized list or website somewhere, and not on the main fic
list. That not only fractures our already tiny fandom, it deprives all of us
of some great fic. That's just sad.

I also don't like having to subscribe to multiple lists

**For me, I don't like the limited number of posts. My chapters are too long
to post on the FKFIC-L, and to be honest I don't have time to figure out
where to cut the story for word content. I've never posted there because
it's my understanding there's a limit. I don't like cutting my chapters into
sections. Each has a distinct ending, and I don't want to change it.

I haven't set up a FK group, except my Midnight Passions which is for FK
fans who also enjoy reading and writing Paranormal Romance. I think authors
post elsewhere because sometimes different lists offer different options
that aren't allowed on existing groups. When I started Midnight Passions it
was because I felt there was a need for Forever Knight fans who wanted a
home to discuss other paranormal romances and experiences. We're two years
old with 376 members to date, which means there is a need for such a place.
MP is a very active group, with many published authors. The FK fans tend to
be N&N die-hards. Many times FK, N&N fiction is posted on MP first to get
suggestions and ideas before posting it on the other FK groups. If anyone is
interested, here's the URL:

>Do people now crave the graphics, the colors, that come with the HTML-enabled
interfaces? Are words and plain text not enough any more?

*** I'll admit, I want all the bells and whistles. I love the graphics and
prefer my HTML. I'm a very visual person and this is my preference. For
me, not having the HTML is like watching a black and white TV. Sure it can
be watched and enjoyed, but we live in a colorful world so why not enjoy the
show to the max? Hey, I like surround sound, too. I also prefer e-books and
readers over paperbacks. The e-book market has opened up so many more
options for reading material. The e-book stores offer a wider range of
genres and sub-genres that NY publishers haven't begun to tap into. (Sorry
about getting off topic here, but I guess I'm a technical junkie and gadget
freak).

>I've always been puzzled about this. At first it was the factions peeling off,
which meant that general fans didn't see faction-specific fic much. And now
it's general fic running away. Why? I just don't get it.

***I prefer going to a FK sites where I know the faction. I don't want to
read stories about Nat&L being intimate or N&J. I'm a die-hard N&N gal as
you all know. When I need my N&N fix, I want to be able to go directly to
the main source. I've copied most of the N&N stories into my personal files
so I don't have to search for them again. And I know there's been a big
debate in the past about people wanting/not wanting stories labeled as
character or content, but with limited reading time I want to know what a
story is about before I begin. It's no different than going into a book
store and heading to your favorite genre section.

Okay, this is my personal preferences and in no way applies to anyone else.
But perhaps others have the same reasons as I stated above.

Personally, I've looked around at other groups and would like to write for

***Lisa, I'm the opposite, but I love your analogy. <LOL> If I need bananas
and milk, I stop at the smaller convenience store. If I need sewing thread,
I head to Hancock Fabric, not the Wal-Mart Super Store. I don't want to walk
all over the super store to find the few specific items wanted, and stand in
the long lines for check out. However, the super stores and the
anything-goes-faction sites do have their benefits for those who chose to
shop there. Hey, I mostly shop the internet (including clothing) and have
things shipped to my door. At least I'm not as bad as hubby, who shops the
drug stores on line for toiletries that he could pick up locally. I guess
it's like someone said earlier, different strokes for different folks.

Multiple lists and factions serve everyone needs.

I agree with Nancy. My time is limited and I like the fact that stories
are"delivered to my door" (i.e. my in-box), to stick with the shopping
analogy.
Although I love the graphics and other possibilities of LJs, yahoo
groups etc, I simply don't want to waste precious time clicking around
the internet. And since stories are about reading and creating the
images in my head (hey, I can still do that!) I prefer the simple B/W
over a colorful webpage that is difficult on the eyes. Same as I prefer
real books to e-books.
FKFic-L with its line restrictions can be a tad annoying when you want
to post but this is a minor inconvenience and not a major turn-off for
me, and, as Libs said, I usually post both to the main list and to my
faction list. And would love for the others to post more to the main
list as well, since I don't want to miss a good story even if it's about
a pairing or character I'm not into usually.
I give every story a chance, even NN fic (joke, lol). I found superb
stories with factions I don't lean to and **** (bleep) stories within my
factions. Nowadays I go by authors, not by content.
As for LJ communities, I have found that they usually die as soon as
they are set up. So I mostly don't bother putting energy into something
that doesn't last and stick with good ole FKFIC.
Sure, I have my own website too, but that is just because I wanted an
archive for my stories that I can control, and stories (with a few
exceptions) go to the list first and then to my website.
For those who don't want the line restriction, you can always just post
the link to ForKni, but you can let us know that you have something to
read for us. As for just posting to faction lists: I want to get
feedback from people outside my faction because their objective opinion
can sometimes be more valuable than the usual "I like any fic with those
two" etc that a faction can bring.
For me, restricing myself to "my factions" would be like ordering the
same meal every time, that's why I prefer the large menu that FKFic offers.

I would like to add that I'd love to read more classic FK Fic, that is
stories written like episodes with a decent present day story and a nice
flashback.
These are things that are usually neglected in Faction Fic.
Problem is that I am not good at writing these myself, I have trouble
with the cop/crime story aspect of the show (writing wise not because I
don't like that) but I LOVE (yes, I'm shouting) reading them!
We need more of those (in ADDITION to the romantic NN, the angsty N,
not-so angsty Dark N etc. or the juicy Slash bit, of course, lol)
since that is the FK Fan Fic genry that really has almost comepletely
vanished.

Thinking about this topic brought up a question.
Most of the restrictions implemented on the main lists are pretty clear
to me (space issues, spamming, flames, copyright etc).
But why is it not allowed to post story links to FKFic but only to ForKni?
Sorry to ask but I have only (?) been on this list for about 4 years so
if this was explained years ago, I don't know.
It just came to mind that not everybody is on both lists and would not

There are different reasons for everyone, I'm
sure. Until recently, I had stopped posting
there. Even now, I am very selective about what
I put there. Why you might ask? I have two
reasons (and I put them forth in a way which
isn't intended to provoke folks):

1.) the 300 line limit per message/3 email per
day limit: As with the person who mentioned this
earlier, my stories tend to be longer pieces. I
have to admit that counting lines in every post
tends to get frustrating. But I respect McLisa
and Don's rule in this regard, so if I want to
post on FKFIC-L, I do it. (I also admit that I
would post more if that limit were
lightened/lifted.)

2.) the whole xover with comic characters thing:
my stories tend to cross with a variety of
topics--some of which aren't allowed by the
rules. (re: Marvelverse) This presents an
interesting quandary because of the PSU server.
(Which resurrects another prickly subject....)
Of late because Smallville IS allowed, I have
brought my stuff back. (Thanks, Don and McLisa!
:) ) Again, I respect the listparents so I don't
post anything that violates the rules.

Thanks for listening and your consideration.

Sincerely,

David

Because then a lot of us who want to read stories via e-mailed get "spammed"
with link after link to stories on sites which lock up our computers or load
slowly. Those of us with older computers have a lot of trouble loading sites
with bells and whistles.

To find out if it is a link, you have to open the e-mail. I, for one, would
end up either deleting all the FKFIC posts because I don't have time to worry
about whether it is a link or an actual story, or unsubbing all together (and
I'm quite serious). I'm having trouble convincing people with webpages that
music and intensive graphics are NOT something people with old computers can
enjoy.

You may say "it only takes a minute to open an e-mail." Well, not right now
for me. I can wait up to five minutes for an e-mail to open. It is incredibly
annoying to find out the e-mail doesn't have content other than a link.

(No, I do NOT have a virus, just an old computer with old computer problems)

However, I do see a lot of stories where the author provide links to their
sites where people can find more of their stories. That's a great idea.

The 300 line limite is due to the LISTSERV limitations. The 3 e-mail rule is
due to people abusing posting in the past. We're talking DOZENS of posts. If
we start overloading PSU's listserv, they could easily kick forkni-l and fkfic
off the list.

> 2.) the whole xover with comic characters thing:
> my stories tend to cross with a variety of

That actually was my suggestion. Why? Because comic books are PRINT media and
some of the companies are extremely protective of their properties and frown
on fanfic. One of my publishers is that way and has told me that they WOULD go
after fan fic to protect their copyrighted material. This is no different
than many writers who do not allow fan fic and can (and have successfully) sued
fan fic writers for copyright violation.

At Bridging the Knight, Chelsea Quin Yarborough (that may not be the correct
spelling) told of a situation where she was forced to sue a few of her fans
for writing fan fiction. She didn't want to do it, but she felt she had to
protect her creative properties.

Comic books are PRINT media as are novels.

Plus, if comic book cross overs were allowed, I'd have to stop reading fan
fic on fkfic since I do freelance in the comic book industry. There's too great
a risk of someone bogusly suing me claiming I'd "stolen" a story idea from
FKFIC.

I put this in place when the list was only a couple of years old, because some
people's mailers choked on longer posts. I'm not opposed to raising the limit,
if Don agrees and if it turns out that subscribers no longer have this problem.
There would still have to be a limit because most people's ISPs still have one

we -- you, Don and I -- can come up with.

Subject: Why we don't allow just links on Fkfic-l

There's a possible legal issue here. You see, if we allowed just the link to
be posted, we'd have no control over the content to which we directed people.
We don't want to end up with an irate parent complaining to PSU that we sent
their minor child a link that led to material the parent considers inappropriate.
We have an adult topic for the same reason.

Another possible legal issue is a link that goes to print crossovers or
crossovers to shows like X-Files where the copyright owners make a point of suing. We
could be liable for directing people to the copyright infringement. Yes, I know
FK fan fic _is_ copyright and is infringement. So far the copyright owners have
not legally taken notice of us. We want to keep it that way, and a lawsuit from
the owners of another copyright would draw unwanted attention.

PSU (Pennsylvania State University) is a publicly-funded site. They have to be
careful because of it. We don't want Fkfic-l to do anything that might make
them drop us.

You can always post the story in plain text (ASCII) to Fkfic-l with a note
showing a link to your site if you want to make an enhanced version available.

The latter could be avoided by stating in the header that you only post
a link, so a person not interested wouldn't have to open the email in
the first place. But I see Lib's point.
Thanks for answering the question, Libs.

A bulk fanfic post :)

I've never been on a faction list, so I only post to FK Fic. Though, it's
been suggested to me that I should also post on fanfiction.net, so as to
get more feedback, so I may do that next time. I also put my fic on my
website (http://www.ondragonswing.com/tales/) as soon as it's complete, so
those that don't want to wait for my usual 20-30 part stories at 3 parts a
day can read it one fell swoop if so desired :)

The 300 line limit. GRR! <g> Only because I'm stupid. I think I have a part
to under 300 lines, then it bounces it back saying it's longer. I think
last time, I cut my parts down to 200 lines so I'd have more leeway. So my
story took a really long time to complete posting, and the parts ended in
odd places. I need to have a better system, obviously!

I am finally writing fic again, so hopefully will start posting in the next
few months. I usually don't post till a story is completely done, so it
takes a while. Though, since they're xovers, only like 15 people will ever
actually read them, and since there's no Nick and no Nat, that probably
takes it down to 5 people! LOL.

It's been nice posting here again. Hard to believe I've been on this list
nearly 10 years. No, wait it has been ten years this month. Wow! I'll try
not and lurk so much in future!

Yes, what Doris said <g>. I think one of the reasons the FK Wars work
as well as they do is that they are collaborative writing efforts.
And, hey, whaddya know? TV shows are collaborative writing efforts,
too.

Personally, I find more good stuff in all the mountains of FK War
postings than I do in a lot of the fanfic.

I'd love whoever would volunteer to consider writing an FK fic
structured like an FK script. It wouldn't have to be in script form
(although, as a person incapable of writing descriptively, I would
like it to be <weg>), but the only way it *could* work, in my opinion,
is if it were a group effort.

<whispers off> Oh ...that was another of my run-on sentences? Like I
said: dialogue I can do. The rest I leave to others.

Cheers,
Julia

Subject: Re: More FK Fan Fiction??

My turn :)

OK, first of all I LOVE the fact that we are talking
about FK Fan Fiction. This show spurred me to start
writing, PERIOD. I've made so many wonderful friends
off of this list, and I've even managed to meet
several of them in person in the last six months. I
even chose Toronto as my last vacation spot in large
part because of Forever Knight.

I will ALWAYS post to the FK Fan Fiction list FIRST
and FOREMOST. Why? Because as far as I am concerned
this is, as someone pointed out, the "Grandmommy" of
our beloved show. The fact that we have people
offering to set up new sites or take over hosting
fkfanfic.com if Mel is unable to speaks VOLUMES to me
about the way FK has affected so many lives. This is a
living community, and obviously it is important to
many of us.

I lead a very busy life, and I have an LJ account; I
have SIX email accounts which I check daily; I am a
member of all the different mailing lists for the
factions that I am interested in; I have posted to
fanfiction.net. I consider the FTP site to be the
"official" repository of my contributions to the FK
story, which I think are pretty substantial
considering I've only been writing for three years. I
have the capabilities, hardware and software wise, to
go to any site that has "bells and whistles", but when
all is said and done, I prefer plain text for the
simple reason that I enjoy the challenge of using my
imagination to *see* what an author is trying to show
me. Honestly, if I go to someone's site and they have
lots of graphics, screen captures, etc I generally
copy/paste the text into notepad and read it that way.
For me, such things interfere with my pleasure. But,
if that is what an author chooses to do with his/her
work, that is their perogative.

McLisa, I would LOVE to see the line limitation
expanded. When I wrote two novella length fics, I was
frustrated BEYOND BELIEF with the 300 line rule. My
solution was to finish the work, send it to the
archive site in its entirety, post the fact that I HAD
done that, and continue to post the sections daily
(although I admit I did forget a couple of times and
loyal readers had to prod me ;)

As someone said ealier, I would rather read good fan
fiction about characters I'm not as invested in than
read bad fiction about my favorite characters. I also
cross several faction lines, because I believe the FK
universe is too rich and complex to say "yes, Nick and
Nat are the only true love couple on the show" or that
there is "no way that Nick and LaCroix EVER had an
intimate relatiohship". I PREFER Seasons 1 and 2 and
think that getting rid of John Kapelos was one of the
stupidest decisions TPTB ever made, but there is much
to be said about having the characters of Tracy and
Vachon to add to the mortal/vampire fiction. I have
used those characters in some of my own fiction just
because they are a nice counterpoint to Nick and
Natalie et al. I am not a fan of crossovers, and tend
to not read them if they come along, but I would never
discourage someone writing them from posting to the
list.

My biggest disappointment regarding other people's
fiction is that I tried my hand at two challenges in
the last year and got no response from anyone. I think
that the Challenges are a great idea, and that Round
Robin fiction is a lot of fun. So, I will probably
never post another challenge, although I will
definitely take part in one if it looks interesting.

I also want to thank Don and McLisa for all their hard
work and dedication over the years. They obviously
read every post that comes across each list as
moderators, and this is NOT an easy job. I want to
thank Mel and Stephanie and the keepers of
fkfanfic2.com for their generous hosting of the
various lists, and I will continue to everything in my
power to keep this universe alive and well.

That being said, anyone interested in an FK Con next
year? :)

Subject: Re: More FK Fan Fiction??

Ok, here I go. Well this will probably be short (as so much of my writing is)

I am one that prefers the FK Fan Fiction list. I like the show as a whole
and don't consider myself one particular faction. In the two wars that I
particpated in I agonized over where to go. (one time I was a Die Hard and last year
I was a UF)
I can see validation for all of the various parings - I can see N/N, I can
see N/J, etc. I have written for many of them. Usually it depends on my mood.
So I don't see myself subscribing to ALL of the varoius fanlistings (I am
subscribed to several non-FK lists and it would be way too much) Just as I come
here to talk about the show.

As for the line limit - for my own writing since they tend to be shorter
pieces, it doesn't really matter. But for reading others I would LOVE more lines.
I hate having to wait for each part and spreading over such a long time to read
a story.

And yes, Kristen, I would def be interest in a FK con. I went to a fan thing
several years ago on Long Island and it was really great! I am actually
planning to head up to TO next summer to see Colm Feore in Stratford.
